The popular game was one of several played for millennia throughout Native North America. Indigenous communities played ball games not only for the important culture- making of sport and recreation, but also as an act of peace-building. The densely populated urban center of Cahokia, as well as its agricultural suburbs and distant trade partners, were dedicated to chunkey. Chunkey is associated with the milieu surrounding the Pax Cahokiana (1050 AD-1200 AD), an era of reduced armed conflict during the height of Mississippian civilization (1000-1500 AD). The relational framework utilized in archaeology, combined with dynamics of conflict resolution, provides a basis to explain chunkey’s cultural impact. -

Horvath – Project Archaeologist Katherine Baar – Archaeologist November 2016 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (ACI) performed a cultural resource assessment survey (CRAS) of 79 acres of the Wiggins Prairie Mitigation Bank for Southern States Land & Timber, LLC in October 2016. Portions of the 492-acre parcel had been previously surveyed, and the current investigations focused on those areas where subsurface disturbance is anticipated. The purpose of the survey was to locate and identify any archaeological sites and historic resources within the project area of potential effects (APE) and to assess their significance in terms of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The archaeological APE consists of those lands that will be subject to subsurface disturbance and have not previously been surveyed for cultural resources. The historical APE consists of the entire property. The survey was requested by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), who reviewed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) file number SAJ-2016-00429-TMF (Parsons 2016). -

Faught Submerged prehistoric sites investigated in northwest Florida along the margins of the drowned Aucilla River channel (or PaleoAucilla) extend our understanding ofprehistoric settlement patterns and paleolandscape utilization. Bifacial and uni- facial tools indicate Late Paleoindian and Early Archaic logistical activities at these sites, as well as later Middle Archaic occupations. -

This activity increases student’s awareness of Florida’s early Spanish exploration, cartography, and geography. GOALS 9 The students will be introduced to the naval routes of early Spanish explorers. 9 The student will understand the significance of consequences of early European exploration. 9 The student will become aware that their community has important historical roots. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND lorida’s documented material history of native people dates back more than 12,000 years. In 1513, a new era in Florida history began with the arrival of Juan Ponce de Léon. His convoy of Fexplorers was the first group of Europeans to document such a landing and gave a name to Florida – La Florida. Soon, Spain, England, Portugal, and France were all attempting to set up colonies in the New World in order to create great empires. The legacy of Spanish Florida was further established by Pedro Menéndez when he founded St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America. During the 1600s, called “The Mission Period,” Franciscan friars led Spanish expansion outward from St. Augustine and created more than 100 mission settlements across Florida. -

His technical expertise is Ecology, FSU 1995 in water quality and aquatic system ecology . Dr. McGlynn began working on aquatic issues since the late 70's at the Center for Wetland Resources at Louisiana State Honors/Awards University, studying aquatic ecosystems in Hypersaline Laguna Madre, Texas and Barataria Bay in South Louisiana. Dr. McGlynn became the Research Director at Receptor Molecules, a Research and Development Laboratory developing monoclonal Ochlockonee River Soil antibodies pollutant assays 1986. Later Dr. McGlynn was the Laboratory Director at the & Water Conservation Center for Aquatic Research and Resource Management (FSU), Environmental Planning District, Supervisor, and Analysis, and Adjunct Professor at FSU where he managed ecosystem studies in District I Apalachee Bay, Amelia Estuary, Apalachicola Bay, Choctawhatchee Bay and Perdido Bay. Dr. McGlynn is currently the President of McGlynn Laboratories Inc (a nationally accredited environmental laboratory), founded in 1997, that has offices in Tallahassee, Florida Lake FL, and Baton Rouge, LA. We apply scientific methods to ecosystem studies, Management Society, particularly lake and coastal zone management. We also design and manage Board of Directors environmental restoration projects.
