Floristic Diversity of Dhamrai Upazila of Dhaka with Emphasis on Medicinal Plants

Bot. 41(1): 71-85, 2012 (June) FLORISTIC DIVERSITY OF DHAMRAI UPAZILA OF DHAKA WITH EMPHASIS ON MEDICINAL PLANTS M OLIUR RAHMAN*, RUMANA TANJIN ANTARA, MOMTAZ BEGUM AND MD ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh Key words: Angiosperm diversity, Dhamrai, Medicinal plants, Bangladesh Abstract A total of 263 angiosperm species under 210 genera and 79 families have been recorded from Dhamrai Upazila of Dhaka district. Of these, Magnoliopsida is represented by 200 species under 154 genera and 62 families while Liliopsida is represented by 63 species under 56 genera and 17 families. Asteraceae is the largest family in Magnoliopsida represented by 17 species, and Poaceae is the largest family in Liliopsida represented by 20 species. Habit analysis shows that herbs, shrubs and trees are represented by 166, 23 and 74 species, respectively. Sixty two medicinal plants have been documented with their uses for the cure of more than 30 diseases, and some of these are diabetes, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, spleen and liver complaints, chronic ulcers, bronchitis, rheumatism, irregular menstruation, piles, urinary problems and heart diseases. Threats to the species have also been assessed and appropriate conservation measures suggested. Introduction Dhamrai is one of the five Upazilas of Dhaka district with an area of 307.4 km2 and is situated about 38 km north-west of Dhaka metropolis. It is located at 23º55΄ N and 90º14΄E. Dhamrai represents an undulating area with conspicuous crests and troughs. The soil is a heterogenous assortment of dry, moist and clay material. The crest soils are represented by three different types, namely brownish grey fine sandy loam, dark grey fine sandy loam and grey fine sandy loam. -

Dear Store Manager Mark's SE 2018
Dear Store Manager: Mark’s, Sports Experts, and Sport Chek (all owned by Canadian Tire) continue to operate in the dark when it comes to their global supply chain for clothing. They do not disclose the names and addresses of factories they source their garments from. That means human rights watch dogs and labour advocates can’t independently verify that garments sold under Canadian Tire’s private labels are manufactured in factories that are safe and where workers rights are respected, and can’t ask Canadian Tire for corrective action in specific factories when problems arise. Last year Canadian Tire reported that it sourced from 67 factories in Bangladesh, but didn’t say which factories. Attached to this letter is a list of 67 factories randomly selected from the list of factories in Bangladesh that have been inspected for safety by the Alliance for Worker Safety, of which Canadian Tire is a member. Could you please tell us if these are the 67 factories that are part of your global supply chain, or identify which of them is? Better yet, please follow the lead of other leading global retailers and institute public reporting of all factories you do use in Bangladesh and around the world. We are asking you to publicly disclose the names and addresses of all the factories you source your garments from. We want to be sure that workers employed in your global supply chain are: • treated fairly and with respect at work • paid a living wage • able to exercise their rights to form unions and bargain collectively • work in safe factories. -
Price Spreads in Cut-Flower Marketing: Some Evidence from Bangladesh

Raha Masuma Siddika ABSTRACT Flower marketing has been expanding rapidly but in an unorganized way. The present study has examined the existing marketing system, estimated marketing cost, margins of different flowers of different marketing channels. Flower growers received 30.75% to 60.42% of the consumer's taka while 24.71% to 58.5% were spent as the marketing cost. The net marketing margin varied from 3.0% to 37.83% of consumer's taka. Growers used channel I most though it involved highest cost of all the channels. Adoption of proper measures for the solution of the current problems would improve the efficiency of the marketing system which will in turn increase grower's share in consumer's taka. I. INTRODUCTION In Bangladesh small -scale flower production has initially started in late seventies by some innovative growers with the production of tuberose but large- scale commercial production was started from mid-eighties in Jhikargacha Upazila of Jessore district. Now around 10000 hectares of land is under flower cultivation ( Siddika 2004). The major flower growing districts are Jessore, Savar, Chuadanga, Mymensingh and Gazipur . Tuberose, rose, gladiolus and marigold are the major commercial flowers grown in Bangladesh. It is assumed that Jessore accounted for 60 % of production area and 80% of the area is occupied by only tuberose. At present flowers are being produced per year on about 500 hectares of land in Jhikargachha and Sharsha Upazilas of Jessore district. -

Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 123-141, 2017 Cropping Pattern, Intensity and Diversity in Dhaka Region N Parvin1*, A Khatun1, M K Quais1 and M Nasim1 ABSTRACT Sustainable crop production in Bangladesh through improvement of cropping intensity and crop diversity in rice based cropping system is regarded as increasingly important in national issues. Planning of agricultural development largely depends on the authentic, reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area, which will provide guideline to our policy makers, researchers, extensionists and development workers. The study was conducted over all 46 upazilas of Dhaka agricultural region in 2015 using pretested semi-structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity in the region. From the present study, it was observed that about 48.27% net cropped area (NCA) is covered by exclusive rice cropping systems whereas deep water rice occupied about 16.57% of the regional NCA. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman alone occupied about 22.59% of net cropped area (NCA) with its distribution over 32 upazilas out of 46. The second largest area was covered by single Boro cropping pattern, which was spread over 44 upazilas. Total number of cropping patterns was observed 164. The highest number of cropping pattern was identified 35 in Tangail sadar and Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district and the lowest was seven in Bandar of Narayanganj and Palash of Narsingdi district. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported as 0.70 in Dhamrai followed by 0.72 in Monohardi of Narsingdi. -

Impact of Improved Poultry Management Technique on Socio- Economic Condition of Broiler Beneficiaries

Alam3 i Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka 2Poultry Production Research Division, BLRI, Savar, Dhaka-1341, Bangladesh 3BLRI, Savar, Dhaka-1341, Bangladesh Abstract In this study attempt was made with 25 broiler beneficiaries and 24 adopter farms to analyze the magnitude of changes in terms of socio-economic status and livelihood pattern of beneficiaries from commercial broiler packages developed and introduced by PMTIP in 4 Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) of Bangladesh. Results showed that number of broiler production for category I, II and III farms were 1122, 1448 and 1777/beneficiary and 488, 763 and 1073/adopter farms, respectively. Annual profitability of broiler production/beneficiary and adopter farms was Tk 8,933 and Tk 10,280, respectively. Annual employment opportunities created for category I, II and III farmers of broiler beneficiaries were 45, 58 and 67 man-days. A substantial impact on supplementary occupation was reflected in poultry business for broiler beneficiaries. Investment in poultry business, cash in hand and saving in banks increased by 3600%, 675% and 1416%, respectively. Drinking water from own tube-well increased by 12%. Katcha latrines decreased by 15.4% and that of sanitary latrines increased by 16.7%. Per capita consumption of chicken, eggs, vegetables,' milk, pulses, fish and rice increased by 65.79%, 7.27%, 7.67%, 5.12%, 10.34%, 19.70% and 8.33% in post-project period.
