  • Plums, Nectarines, Apricots, Cherries, Almonds and Prunus Hybrids
E-612 2-13 Texas Fruit and Nut Production lums, Nectarines, Apricots Cherries, Almonds and Prunus hybrids Larry Stein, Jim Kamas, and Monte Nesbitt Extension Fruit Specialists, The Texas A&M University System s closely related members of the rose family, plums and apricots typically require similar management. Both fruits have performed Amuch better in Texas than nectarines, almonds, sweet cherries, and Prunus hybrids because they are less susceptible to disease, varmints, and crop loss due to premature blooming. Plums The plum tree has white flowers and sets fruit on buds from previous season’s growth (Fig. 1). Usually Figure 1. A plum orchard in full bloom. the fruit has a dusty white coating or wax bloom that is easily rubbed off (Fig. 2). Plums can be sweet to tart; the skin is typically quite tart. The two main species used in the United States are the European plum, Prunus domestica, and the Japanese plum, Prunus salycina. The European plum includes varieties such as ‘Stanley’, which is grown for fresh fruit and often dried for use as prunes. These varieties have produced poorly in Texas because they require cold climates and are susceptible to fungal diseases such as brown rot. The varieties adapted to Texas are usually hybrids Figure 2. The dusty white coating associated with between P. domestica and P. salycina and are known plums is known as wax bloom. 1 Figure 4. A new species of Neooreophilus from the eastern Andes of Colombia and Ecuador is described and illustrated. Neooreophilus chaoae is related to a group of species that includes N. cordilabius, N. chelosepalus and N. werneri characterized by having an obovate, pubescent dorsal sepal and spread or reflexed, non-pubescent lateral sepals ending with an apiculum. The new species can be distinguished by its narrowly triangular lateral sepals and its lip with lateral lobes not extending beyond the column.

  • Ygb(I)V: Horizontal Color in the New York Subway
Robert R. Stenson Intro to Archaeology Joanna S. Smith 25 October 2007 R(o)ygb(i)v: Horizontal Color in the New York Subway The subway arrives in color. In our minds, our stations, and our maps, the New York City subway system arrives in colors: red, blue, orange, green, purple, etc. Whether you are holding a map, navigating the station, or standing on the platform, deciphering this subway means using color as a tool of instantaneous and conscious differentiation. That is, when we trace a line with our finger, spot a sign, or peer into the tunnel, we are consciously looking for a specific color, and can know instantaneously whether or not a train is “ours.” But the nature of this scheme is to operate in a “vertical” orientation. As we ride toward our destination, we ride with a color; as we glide north and south beneath the grey city, moving against the horizontal grid of cross-streets, the A train remains blue and the 1 remains red—no matter what station, either West 4th or 200th. But little-known in the New York subway complex is a limited, enigmatic system of “horizontal” color, bands of colored tile on station walls—a system which, theoretically, gives us the sense not of moving with a color, but through changing colors: green at West 4th, red at 200th etc. As a result of poor documentation and limited use, however, what we know of the colors is preserved primarily on the subway station walls; a once-modern scheme has silently become archaic, found only in an archaeological context.

Our perception of color is ruled by light wavelengths, and how they absorb or reflect from a surface. Our eyes are sensitive to light, so color perception depends on how individual light wavelengths react to a surface, creating visible light. Humans see hair color based on how individual light wavelengths are absorbed or reflect from each hair strand. Color Perceptions WHITE LIGHT SPECTRUM The electromagnetic spectrum of light that passes through our atmosphere is known as the visible (or white light) spectrum. The white light spectrum is a combination of all visible saturated color wavelengths the human eye and brain can distinguish. Black is a total absence of light. LIGHT WAVELENGTHS & COLOR The visible spectrum corresponds directly to individual light wavelengths, ranging from 400 to 700 nanometers (nm), and a color range of violet through dark red. Every surface absorbs, diffuses, combines and/or reflects each light wavelength, enabling the human eye and brain to perceive color.
