/ THE NEW SCHOOL 66 W 12th ST 11 ALGONQUIN 4-2567 April 19, 1944

Dear Mr.,)feinsteini ,/ I am_,..--glad to enclose the list of our refugee sclrolars who were, or ·atill--- are, con nected with the New School. Those on the list for whom I have additional bio~aphical ma terial in my files bear a mark('.'1) before their names. However, it would take quite some time to go over the entire material in order to forward you the essential data. May I therefore suggest that you first look through the whole list, and tell me exactly which specific questions, in ad dition to those answered on the list, you would like to have answered. This would make our work here more efficient. Sincerely yours, ~

Mr. I. M. Weinstein Special Assistant to the Executive Director J Executive Office of the ~resident War Refugee Board Washington 25 1 D.O. _Enclosure.

May 10, 1944

Dear Mr. Pehle:

Thank you for your;note acknowledging our invitation to sponsor the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Dinner of the New School.

May I point out that it is not necessary to be present at the dinner in order to B!n"Ve as a sponsor, As I indicated in my letter of in'iritation, aponro rship implies no obligation beyond your expression of appreciation to the founders and your interest in the work of the New School.

It has been deeply satisfying to see how many friends of the New School have followed its significant career during these foruative years, The many hundreds of fine letters which I have received are a great tribute to the founders in whose honor the dinner is being held.

If, with this further explanation you wish us to include your name in our sponsor group, will you please let me know. Sincerely,- {~A__ti.5Cef L~n Fraser, Chairman Twenty-fifth Anniversary Co!Dllittee

Mr, John W, Pehle Treasury Departmant Washington, D,C.

Dear Mr. B:l hle: In 1919, a group of men and women bad the courage and foresight to ineietjthat the right to a liberal education was the first premise· of a liberal demooraoy. They oonoeived the idea of a school where serious-minded mature students would be free at all times to evaluate the truth for its own sake. They were the founders of the New Sohool: George w. Bacon, Charles A. Beard, Mrs. Henry Bruere, Charles C. Burlingham, John Dewey, Mrs. Leonard K. Elmhiret, Felix Frankfurter, Mro. Learned Hand, Alvin Johnson, Mrs. Thomas w. Lamont, Mrs. Henry Goddard Leach, Mrs. Walton Martin, Wesley C. Mitchell and Mrs. George Haven Putnam. Thie year marks the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the New Sohool. And it presents us with the opportunity to pay tribute to the Sohool'e Founders, in recognition of their great service to American liberal education. Thie tribute will be paid at a dinner to be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on Monday eve- ning, May 22, 1944. · Ae Chairman of the Twenty-Fifth Anniveroary Committee, I invite you to join me as a Sponsor of this ainner. Your service on the Sponsors' Committee will involve n6 obliga tion other than your expression of appreciation to the Founders of the New Sohool. Will you please write me at the New School/ 66 West 12th Street, at your first opportunity?· I hope you.will accept. Sincerely, A_-~~.se.r Leon Fraser · ..
