The recent statement of William O. Thompson in resigning as a member of the National Recovery Review Board, clearly exposes this Act as an instrument for increasing the power of monopoly capital in the United States, a weapon for a further attack upon the standard of living of the working class and a step in the direction of fascism in this country. For their factual information and significant though incom plete interpretation of the National Industrial Recovery Act, we reproduce in this pamphlet certain statements as released to the press by persons who have participated in governmental bodie! during this period. We present also the fundamental analysis of the Roosevelt New Deal made by Earl Browder, Secretary of the Communist Party of the U. S. A. A word of explanation on each is in place here. I. Thompson's Resignation: In a letter to President Roosevelt, June 14, 1934, W. O. Thompson presented his resignation as a member of the National Recovery Review Board, declaring that "as a result of my contact with the workings of the National Recovery Administration through membership on the Recovery Review Board, I have been forced to the following conclusions: The trend of the National Recovery Administration has been and continues to be toward the encouragement and development of monopoly capitalism in the United States.. -

PROGETTO MOSTRA BALDASSARRE CASTIGLIONE E RAFFAELLO VOLTI E MOMENTI DELLA VITA DI CORTE a cura di Vittorio Sgarbi e Elisabetta Soletti Urbino, Palazzo Ducale, Sale del Castellare 18 luglio - 1 novembre 2020 Nell’anno raffaellesco, la città di Urbino intende celebrare con una importante mostra Bal- dassarre Castiglione, figura di primo piano nel clima culturale e nel quadro politico dei primi decenni del Cinquecento. Figlio di Cristoforo Castiglione e di Aloisia Gonzaga, egli nasce a Casatico (Mantova) nel 1478. Nel 1490 viene mandato dal padre a Milano dove si forma la sua ampia cultura classica e umanistica alla scuola di Giorgio Merula e di Demetrio Calcondila, e le lingue e le lettera- ture classiche, in particolare il greco, rimangono le predilette dallo scrittore come testimo- niano le lettere e l’inventario della sua ricca biblioteca. Dopo la morte del padre, 1499, rientra a Mantova dove inizia la sua carriera diplomatica al servizio di Francesco Gonzaga. Nel 1504 si trasferisce a Urbino presso la corte di Guidobaldo di Montefeltro. Durante gli anni urbinati compie numerose missioni, tra cui quella del 1506 in cui si reca in Inghilterra presso Enrico VII. Dal 1513 al 1516 in qualità di ambasciatore del duca di Urbino si stabilisce a Roma du- rante il papato di Leone X, e in quel periodo si rinsaldarono i legami di amicizia e di affinità intellettuale che lo univano ai protagonisti, artisti e letterati, della vita culturale di quegli anni fin dalla stagione urbinate, tra cui P. Abstract Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya, Anti
ABSTRACT KAMALADEVI CHATTOPADHYAYA, ANTI-IMPERIALIST AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVIST, 1939-41 by Julie Laut Barbieri This paper utilizes biographies, correspondence, and newspapers to document and analyze the Indian socialist and women’s rights activist Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya’s (1903-1986) June 1939-November 1941 world tour. Kamaladevi’s radical stance on the nationalist cause, birth control, and women’s rights led Gandhi to block her ascension within the Indian National Congress leadership, partially contributing to her decision to leave in 1939. In Europe to attend several international women’s conferences, Kamaladevi then spent eighteen months in the U.S. visiting luminaries such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Margaret Sanger, lecturing on politics in India, and observing numerous social reform programs. This paper argues that Kamaladevi’s experience within Congress throughout the 1930s demonstrates the importance of gender in Indian nationalist politics; that her critique of Western “international” women’s organizations must be acknowledged as a precursor to the politics of modern third world feminism; and finally, Kamaladevi is one of the twentieth century’s truly global historical agents. IT was predicted of the Great Philanthropist, "He shall tum the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of children to their fathers." The writer seeks to contribute something toward the development of such mutual afiection between the members of the Pope Family. He has found his own heart tenderly drawn toward all whose names he has registered and whose biographies he has at tempted to write. The dead are his own, whose graves he has sought to strew with the tributes of love ; the living are his own, every one of whose careers he now watches with strong interest. He has given a large part of bis recreation hours and vacation time for eight years to the gathering of materials for the work ; written hundreds of letters ; examined a great many deeds and wills, town journals, church registers, and family records ; visited numerous persons and places, and pored over a large number of histories of towns and families ; and has gathered here the items and entries thus discovered. -

BÖTTE Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin, Germany The federal structure of Germany favoured the development of a great variety of well-stocked libraries. None however had the means of acquiring in their entirety the printed works published in the German- speaking countries. Only as late as 1913, after the foundation of the Deutsche Buecherei, was the collection of the modern German book production achieved. The gaps of the past are considerable and unfavourable to scholarly research. In order to make up for this deficit, the SAMMLUNG DEUTSCHER DRUCKE was founded in 1989. Since then five libraries have been collecting works printed between 1450 and 1912. When they were joined by Die Deutsche Bibliothek in 1995, a virtual national library was established. The problem "A single German national library remains a fiction." – at least according to Michael P. Olson, who in 1996 chose this apodictic phrase as the very beginning of his study about The Odyssey of a German National Library1. What is so bewildering about Olson’s statement? The fact that it is true? A national library, in Olson’s understanding, is presumed to have four functions: 1) “to be the nation’s bibliographic centre, 2) to be the repository for the nation’s printed works, 3) to collect foreign literature as comprehensively as funds allow, 4) to have outstanding retrospective collections.”2 Of course, we do have Die Deutsche Bibliothek as Germany’s national bibliographic centre and repository for its modern book production. -

Portrait of Elisabetta Gonzaga oil on wood, 52.50 x 37.30 cm Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi, 1503 – 1504 ca. Like the painting depicting the Young Man with an Apple, this painting dates from Raffaello’s younger years, when he attended and served the court of Urbino. Raffaello was still just a child when his father Giovanni Santi, who under Duke Federico was the intellectual of the court and trusted on all matters artistic, held a theatrical play to celebrate the wedding of Guidobaldo, the Duke of Urbino’s heir, to Elisabetta Gonzaga. The painting arrived in the Medici collections, and thence to the Uffizi, as part of the dowry for Vittoria della Rovere’s wedding in 1631. It depicts the young woman dressed richly in clothes woven with gold, characterised by a refined, aristocratic elegance. A headdress in the portentous form of a scorpion rests on the lady’s forehead. The depiction of the landscape in the background is particularly poetic, with the light of the rising sun touching the strips of cloud in the sky and the rocky path over to the right. Young Man with an Apple painting on wood, 47.40 x 35.30 cm Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi, 1503 – 1504 ca. Arriving in Florence from Urbino as part of Vittoria della Rovere’s dowry upon her marriage to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, this painting probably depicts a member of the Urbino court, perhaps the teenaged figure of Francesco Maria della Rovere himself. The boy is presented to us in the role of Paris. Like the hero in the myth, he holds the symbolic fruit in his right hand, destined for the most beautiful of the ladies who we must imagine competing before him. -

ECONOMIC SECURITY ACT ' 922 salaried members of the group, who generally are in the later middle years of life, especially where the individuals in this group change from year to year, as their salary changes would pass them in or out of the group. On the other hand, it would be difficult to get ministers and local church boards to pay the earnings and employment excise taxes one year, and then skip one or more years, then resume, and at the same time pay in correspondingly fluc tuating sums to their denominational pension boards in order to provide the pen sions to the higher salaried men, the disability pensions for all the group, the widows pensions, the orphans pensions, and besides, the supplemental pensions which would have been provided in the earlier years of the operation of the Fed eral System, where the age anuities are limited to 15 percent or only slightly higher percentages of average salaries, limited to $150 per month. Furthermore most of these pension boards also make provision for the mis sionaries of their churches, home and foreign, and the larger part of the foreign missionaries would be excluded from the Federal Plan because of performing the greater part of their duties outside the continental United Sta.tes. Without depriving anyone of the right to be cared for under the Federal Plan the amendment we propose will enable the Church Pension Fund, which can demonstrate to the Social Insurance Board, their ability to do so, to make pro- vision for larger age annuities for their beneficiaries than the Federal Plan. -

Correggio himself is not included : he is too great a figure in Italian art to be treated as merely the member of a local school ; and he has already been the subject of a separate monograph in this series. The classical volumes of Girolamo Baruffaldi are still indispensable to the student of the artistic history of Ferrara. It was, however, Morelli who first revealed the importance and significance of the Perrarese school in the evolution of Italian art ; and, although a few of his conclusions and conjectures have to be abandoned or modified in the light of later researches and dis- coveries, his work must ever remain our starting-point. vii viii PREFACE The indefatigable researches of Signor Adolfo Venturi have covered almost every phase of the subject, and it would be impossible for any writer now treating of Perrarese painting to overstate the debt that he must inevitably owe to him. -

The allegorical interpretations of both are by the historian Philipp Lonitzer (-1599), a brother of the physician and botanist Adam Lonitzer. The last 14 p. before the colophon have blank shields, four to a page. The preceding 40 p. mostly have full-page blank shields with figures, alternating with allegorical figures, both without text. The woodcuts are by Jost Amman (some signed IA) and other artists represented by the initials MF, LF, MB, MT(?), CS.
