Page 4 Delivered to each house each month and it’s FREE The British Red Cross.

We all know their symbol and see the great work they do at emergencies around the globe.

However, did you know they offer many other services?

Here in Quedgeley there is a Red Cross centre, it is called a Hub and forms part of the Nationwide equipment supply locations.

The one in Quedgeley offers Wheelchairs of all sizes, ancillary equipment, walking aids, and Toileting equipment. Similar to many charities they are unable to provide equipment free of charge, but the cost of hiring is often a lot less cost than buying new.

Often things are only required for a short time, possibly after an operation. So why BUY-HIRE.

At present it can only open on a Tuesday, the reason of that is its run by volunteers. However if more people could spare a few hours a week, they would love to open it every day.

So are there people in Hardwicke, Quedgeley and Kingsway that would like to join the small existing team and enable the Red Cross to run this much-needed service. The right person would need basic I.T. skills, like meeting people, it is local, it is indoors, it is warm, has a kitchen and toilets. And FULLBACKUP and training is provided

The Red Cross has an on-line shop of many things at redcross.org.uk.

If you think you can help contact the Quedgeley base on either 01452 726688 or 01452 881613. Both are answer machines but you will soon be contacted.

1st Kingsway Brownies This half term the Brownies have been working hard on the Brownies Be Well theme and in particular for Feel Good Stage 3. So everyone made a mindfulness jar, which was decorated and filled with food colouring and glitter , so when it is shaken the girls are encouraged to think about their happy thoughts. On one of the rare evenings this term when it was not raining we were able to go outside to discuss fair play by racing with cups full of water, and then to help us relax we blew bubbles to allow negative thoughts to blow away. We've also learned about which foods are impor- tant for building a strong and happy body and how to use body language to increase our confidence.

There are three interest badges which tie in with the Be Well theme. One of these is Grow Your Own, and we've already had some Brownies who've brought in photos of the plants they have grown and explained how they cared for them. They've also designed some beautiful dream gardens which would be a pleasure to relax in. The other two badges are Dancing, which is appealing in particular to the Brownies who also go to dance classes and Mindfulness.

Page 13 Quedgeley News is produced and distributed by volunteers Beech Green Primary School – Introducing Forest School “Believe Grow Persevere Succeed”

Dear Readers,

January 2019 saw the beginning of an exciting new adventure at BGPS, as two of its teachers, Miss Sonya Whitfield and Mrs Lisa Thorne, embarked on their journey to becoming Level 3 Forest School leaders. Since April, mor e than 180 of the school’s children from Year 1 - 3 have had the opportunity to take part in Forest School (FS) sessions and the impact has been impressive.

What is Forest School? There are 6 key principles of Forest School. These include that children will experience regular sessions in a natural environ- ment to support the development of the relationship between the learner and the natural world. It uses a range of learner- centred processes to create a community for being, develop- ment and learning and promotes the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. Forest School offers the opportunity to take appropriate risks and is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their pro- fessional practice.

At BGPS, our values are Believe, Grow, Persevere, Succeed. Forest School pro- vides an opportunity for children to continue to develop these values by broadening their experiences and providing new opportunities. Forest School sessions sup- port a holistic approach to educating the whole child. They are a child centred ap- proach to learning which facilitate a hands-on response to the children’s interests and needs. This includes developing practical skills, using tools to build and create, and improving physical motor skills. Our Forest School journey so far

The introduction of Forest School at BGPS so far has seen some very exciting changes. In November 2018, the whole school took part in a tree - planting day, where the back end of the school field was transformed with more than 130 ees!tr More trees are planned to be planted in March 2020 in order to further develop the space. For now, the "old FS area" has been adapted to introduce a base camp for safe tool and fire- work as well as a place to gather at the beginning and end of each session. It also has a new "mud kitchen" as well as "Bug Boots" created by the children.

Thanks to Friends at Beech Green (FABG), we have been able to purchase our very own tool kit for the children to develop their skills and a new fire kit is on the horizon.

Page 14 Quedgeley News : YOUR local FREE community magazine, putting its profits back into the community What the children think

Ask any of the children from Years 1 - 3 about Forest School and I am sure that they will have a lot of exciting things to tell you. From creating mud meals, building elaborate structures, including pirate ships and obstacle courses, to creating musical instruments and go- ing on mini-beast hunts, the children's learning really has taken them places. This term, Year 3 has been exploring the Stone Age in their FS sessions, de- veloping their whittling skills as well as making shelters, bows and arrows. Some Year 3 feedback so far includes “My first experience of FS was amazing! I played in the mud kitchen and I made a park using the planks including a see-saw and a slide”. Another child said “ I did whittling and it was very, very, very fun! I can’t wait to do it again!” Over the rest of this year, FS will be introduced to the rest of KS2 as well as the new Reception intake. We are looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Severn Vale WI

Our August outing was on the Steam train to Minehead, we had some amusement during the journey as a herd of cows decided to lead the way along the line. On our return journey we had a cream tea on the train which was very good. The weather was lovely and warm and the beach was very inviting. Our Autumn began with our September meeting. We had a speaker telling us about the Suffragettes and Votes for Women.

We learnt a lot of facts which we didn’t know about the Suffragettes. For our October meeting we had a speaker on two of Henry VIII’s wives, Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleeves.

Our next meeting will be our AGM followed by a speaker on 400 years of Stroudwa- ter textiles.- so begins another WI year.

We have lots of activities during the year, three outings, 5 Days Away and a further outing later in the year, a monthly lunch group, crafts, knit and natter, walking group and visits to cinemas, concerts etc., throughout the year.

If you would like to join us, ring Lorraine (721763) for more information.

Page 16 Quedgeley News : YOUR Community, YOUR Magazine Update from Quedgeley County Councillor Mark Hawthorne:

First up this month, a number of people have been contacting me regarding over- grown hedges and trees across Quedgeley – especially where it blocks pavements There seems to be a real issue with this at the moment, and I’m currently pulling together a hit-list to get them all sorted. So if you have one near you, please drop me a line on my email below, and if you can please send a picture.

Secondly, I’m pleased to announce that Quedgeley Town Council and myself have been working on a scheme to purchase a mobile speed camera for Quedgeley. This will allow us to run speed awareness campaigns on some of our key roads, and col- lect real data on actual speeds. We have initially identified Bristol Road (after Aldi), Fieldcourt Drive, Meerbrook Way and Elmore Lane for the first phase – but please drop me a line if you have a road you want adding.

Up next, your Conservative councillor team are currently working with the city council to look at a huge investment in new childrens play areas across Quedgeley. These include new sites on Green Farm and Clearwater, plus much needed improvements on the existing site in Fieldcourt. If anyone has any suggestions, or would like to be more involved please drop me a line

Finally there is still funding available for community activities across Quedgeley. Thanks to everyone who has already got in touch, but its not too late to apply – so drop me a line for more details.

As always, any issues or concerns please get in touch at mark.hawthorne@glouces- tershire.gov.uk or give me a call at home on 309724. You can also follow me on Facebook @mark4quedgeley, where I regularly update with any news in and around Quedgeley.

WATERWELLS AND HUNTS GROVE BOARDS COMMUNITY VACANCIES

Robinswood Academy Trust is an innovative, forward thinking multi-academy trust. We have been growing and are now collectively responsible for making sure over 1000 children in Gloucester get the education they need and deserve.

Things are changing fast in the world of education; schools have never had more say on how we deliver the best education for our children and to do this we need your help.

We are looking to appoint members of the local Waterwells community, including representatives from local businesses and organisations in the Waterwells area, to enhance our community representation on our Academy Boards for Waterwells and Hunts Grove Primary Academies. You don't need any previous experience, an as- sociation with the schools is not necessary, and we want to encourage people who normally think they can't get involved to think differently this time.

Becoming part of our friendly team could be the best thing you do in 2019! From building your skills, connections and experience to really making a difference to how children in this country are educated - being part of one of our Academy Boards is a great thing to do.

To become an Academy Board member, you will need to be able to attend 3 meet- ings a year. Meetings are usually held in the early evening, but we can help with childcare, disability access and the cost of travel if meetings take place during the working day. The main thing is, if you'd like to be involved and think there is a reason that will make it difficult, get in contact and we will se e if there is anything we can do to help.

The Academy Boards are responsible for:

Monitoring their Academy’s performance and providing challenge and support to the leadership team to ensure that best possible outcomes are achieved for all pupils;

Ensuring that the relevant delegated Trust policies are adhered to and implemented at the local level, including both curriculum and non-curriculum policies such as safe- guarding and health and safety;

Providing information about their Academy to the Board of Trustees; and Communi- cating with parents and the wider local community.

Page 20 All the adverts are on our website for a whole year

All Academy Board Members (apart from the Executive Headteacher, Head of Schools and Staff Members) are volunteers with a suggestederm tof office of four years.

If you wish to apply, please submit a letter of interest, including what skills, attributes and experiences you can bring to the role, to our Company Secretary, Mrs Celia Daglish (email: [email protected]) by Monday, 2nd December 2019. You are welcome to contact the Executive Headteacher, Mrs Kim Hoodless (via Rob- inswood Primary Academy – tel 01452-530430), for an informal discussion. You’re probably already aware of the mental health support Treasure Seekers pro- vides at Support at the Cavern every night of the year from 6-11pm. It’s a space for anyone with mental health issues to come and get advice, talk to others or play a game in a relaxed community setting. However Treasure Seekers is also involved in the wider area of mental health by partnering in a new initiative called GlosTalks, which highlights the importance of talking about mental health and it is helping to fight the stigma that still remains around the issue of ntalme health. The GlosTalks movement came out of the work of the Tackles Stigma Steering Group which includes over a dozen local Mental Health organisations and now in- cludes people, businesses, charities, schools and community organisations from all backgrounds in Gloucestershire. There is still a great deal of stigma surrounding mental health, whether it be negative attitudes, stereotypical views or negative vo- calisations to people. This in turn can lead to people feeling it’s not the sort of sub- ject they should talk about openly which then leads to a bottling up of feelings. The GlosTalks initiative aims to break down these barriers by encouraging people to talk. Every time someone talks about their mental health, the stigma is being challenged and a barrier is broken. GlosTalks is aiming to eradicate stigma against mental health in Gloucestershire. It wants to see ours be a county where every single per- son, from every and any walk of life, feels comfortable to talk openly about mental health but to also be able to get help and know where to get that help from should they need it.

If you are someone who suffers with a mental health issue, or know someone who does, have a look at the GlosTalks website www.glostalks.co.uk. You can share a story, get involved by volunteering and also get free training. If you’re part of an organisation that wants to become one where people can talk openly and honestly about mental health, you can partner with GlosTalks by emailing hello@glostalks. co.uk. If you would like any booklets to give to people to let them know where they can find help, pop into Treasure Seekers Hub on Westgate treetS and pick some up.

Page 22 Quedgeley News is produced and distributed by volunteers Royal British Legion Now we are well into October the Branch becomes very busy as we are leading up to our Poppy Plod on the 27th October and then on the 1st November we start Poppy collecting in Tesco and Aldi. Last year the RBL Nationally raised £51.5 million pounds and Hardwicke & District played our part in that total.

On October 9th we held our AGM where Branch Officers andCommittee were voted in. There were two new members of the Committee and one person retired.

The Tuesday Club took a trip to the Forest of Dean Railway where we took a trip on the train and enjoyed a cream tea. We picked the best day of the week and the trip was enjoyed by all.

Our Remembrance service this year will be held at the St Nicholas Church in Hard- wicke at 10.30am for 10.45am followed by a reception afterwards at Hardwick RBL where there will be a display by Val Porter who has spent the last year or so re- searching WW1 soldiers in the war memorial and also those who returned. She is also now researching WW11 men of Hardwicke. Please come along and see the display. We look forward to seeing you.

Page 25 Quedgeley News : YOUR local FREE community magazine, putting its profits back into the community Reverend Canon Fr John F. Ward The New Rectory St. James Close School Lane Quedgeley Gloucester GL2 4PN 01452-720411 07967 636094 [email protected] Dear Parishioners & Friends,

November is renowned for its dark and dismal days; there is a certain melancholy as we move from the warmth of the autumn sunshine to the cold, wet and windy days of this month.

November is the time of remembrance. All Saints and All Souls days are held on the 1st and 2nd and the annual Remembrance Day services for those who lost their lives in conflict, takes place on 10th and 11th of this month .

All Souls day is a day when we remember our loved ones who have passed away. On the 3rd November we shall be holding our annual Bereavement Service in church at 4pm. This service is for those who have lost their loved ones in the last year. It is a time to give thanks to God for their lives and the love we share with them. It is also an opportunity to meet others who are in similar circumstances and there is time to chat over a cuppa after the service.

If you have lost a loved one and feel this service would be of benefit, please do come and join us. As Christians we believe that death is not the end. Through the cruci- fixion and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we areiven g life eternal. We are reminded in the gospels - John 3.16 that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. There is a lovely poem by Christina Rossetti that I know has brought comfort to many whether you are a believer or not. I’d like to share it with you. Let Me Go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not for long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that once we shared Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone. It's all part of the master plan A step on the road to home.

Golden Age Club We have had three very interesting and enjoyable meetings since we returned after the August break. Firstly, Peter John from Co-op Estate Planning gave a very valu- able and informative talk entitled "Tax, Care and Toy Boys". This included advice on the wisdom of making a Will and how to ensure that in the end the intended ben- eficiaries would actually benefit. For example, it was notways al advisable to leave everything to one's spouse. He then talked about Inheritance Tax and various ways to safeguard one's Estate. Other important topics included the cost of long-term care and perhaps the need for a Power of Attorney.

Secondly, at our next meeting another batch of interesting and challenging quizzes was presented by our own resident quizmaster - Joe Blewitt - and were very much enjoyed.

Then at the beginning of October Tony Conder gave members a talk - accompanied by slides - entitled "The Docks - Then and Now". There was so much for him to tell us and it was a very detailed and interesting talk, interspersed with fascinating and amusing anecdotes. Work had continually taken place over 200 years. Originally a river port, boats and barges then had to wait for the tides. Because of this a canal was constructed which took several years and then the main basin, the barge arm and pumping stations were built. This enabled more use of the docks which in turn called again for more work to be done. The provision of railways for imports of timber and coal was needed and for warehouses and mills to be built, mainly for corn, to name just a few examples. Today we all recognise the converted warehouses which mainly house business organisations.

If you would like more details of our over 60s Club please contact Terry Prosser (Vice Chairman) on 01452 725331 or Sue Lovell on 01452 724 620.

Quedgeley Town Council News

November is a very busy time of year here at the Town Council with all hands on deck to prepare and provide hopefully another successful Firework Display. Once again it will be held at Fisher’s Meadow, 9th November, 7.00pm. Gates open at 5.30pm. Tickets are already flying off the shelves and to assistour residents, the Town Council office will be open during various eveningsading le up to the event, as well as the Saturday morning of the event. Once again we are working in partnership with Danter’s Funfair who will also be providing refreshments etc and we would also like to thank Severn Vale School for providing free car parking once again to support our event and we would politely request that anyone driving takes advantage of this facility to avoid road congestion. We also ask you to be mindful of residents who live around Fisher’s Meadow. We recommend you buy your tickets in advance to en- able you to gain a quick entry on the night. This event will also be advertised on our Facebook Account and website. We really hope you all come along again to support this event – bring your wellies!!! *SURVEY* Moving on from this, we would like to invite you to take our survey on Silent Fireworks. This survey can be found on our website page – www.quedgeley- pc.gov.uk. Alternatively, paper copies are available in the office should you wish to pop in. This is really important. Whether you support Silent Fireworks or Traditional Fireworks, you need to let us know your thoughts as this will shape the future of our fireworks events. Another successful litter pick took place this month by the newly formed Quedgeley Wombles. Your Town Councillors purchased some junior gloves and high viz jackets to enable the youngsters to get more- in volved and it proved to be a big success. Thank you to all involved. It is so uplifting to see our community looking after each other and contributing to keeping our area a nice place in which to live.

Armistice Day will be held this year at The War Memorial in St James’ Churchyard. Monday 11th November 2019 at 10.45am. Everyone is welcome.

No news yet but we are still working towards moving and we would like to reas- sure all our residents that the funding for this will not detrimentally impact on your precept and has been strategically aligned to tie in with other liabilities which have now come to an end, hence enabling your council to reinvest into your community. Your Town Council recognises that everyone living in our community has the right to know where to go for advice and support and being visible is pivotal in achiev- ing this. Moving into a more central and inclusive officeill w enable our residents to find us easily and provide all visitors a far better experience when visiting the office. This also falls in line with our 3-year strategic plan in which we continuously seek to improve our services and engage fully with our community.

Page 30 Visit Quedgeley News on Facebook

We are a Quality Gold Council, we do not just pay lip service, we strive to engage with our community and justify those funds received by you the taxpayer. This fol- lows an isolated concern regarding the move which has been addressed fully and transparently in the office so hopefully this will help alleviateto any further concerns Quedgeley Town Council recently took part in the Help if we Can Dedication and Af- filiation service held at St James’ Church. The Parade saw Naval Cadets from both Alacrity and TS Ledbury (Hereford) with Marine Cadets and the Colours of the Police and Ambulance Services together with the Airborne Forces Association and Cadet Colours march to the church.

This service was then followed by refreshments in the school and cheques for good causes for the year 2018-19 were presented.

Saturday Surgery - The next Saturday Surgery will take place at ASDA in Kingsway on Saturday 16th November 2019, 10.00am – 12.00noon. Your Town Councillors will be available and will be happy to answer any queries, concerns or even take compliments relating to your local community.

Dear Readers,

Our children are now very well settled into their classes and have been making some great progress with their learning, especially in their English and Maths. Our school values are Kindness, Perseverance and Success. These values are demonstrated daily by our children and we always enjoy celebrating moments of success during our Friday assemblies. Here are just a few of our successes that we would like to share with you:

Sporting Achievements Netball - On Friday 4th October 2019 Kingsway Primary School began their new netball season with their firstme ga being at home against Highnam. The Kingsway Primary School Team was keen and ready despite it being a very new look team with many players making their debut in netball. With amazing teamwork and confidence they were able to win. Good luck for the rest of the sea- son. We are all cheering you on at KPS.

Kingsway Primary School House Cross-Country Championships 2019-20 - Octo- ber the children in Years 2 to 6 at Kingsway Primary School took part in the annual House Cross-Country Championships on the school field. The children were com- peting for both themselves and their houses because their efforts would see selec- tions for the GSSN Gloucester Schools Cross-Country Championships in November and the QLC Cross-Country Championships in February Challenging Yourself Year 6 PGL Trip – What a fantastic time the chil- dren had at PGL, even the wet weather didn’t stop them enjoying all the activities. From team work in canoeing and raft building, to challenging heights while climbing and abseiling, every single person who went pushed themselves to achieve more than they thought they could. They are now using all these skills in class during their lessons and have produced some fantastic pieces of writing.

Kingsway Residents Association

The Residents Association will be holding their last public meeting of 2019, come along and find out what we have been upto this year.

The most exciting news for all families in Quedgeley is the government’s decision to increase funding for schools sharply. In 2020 Severn Vale and other secondary schools will get £5,000 per pupil, and the average forall schools in Gloucester is £4,628 per pupil – an increase of £17 million per year or almost 5%. That means every school in Quedgeley, Kingsway (& Hunts Grove) will get the money they need to provide the quality education your children and grandchildren need.

Of course it’s also important that the government and county council work together to make sure that we have the right number of school places available, and before long that will mean preparing another secondary school as Severn Vale is at full capacity.

The other thing we then all want after education for our young is opportunity. One of Quedgeley’s best kept secrets is the variety of great businesses based here or close to here. Examples of this include the Protrack Group, who have developed apps to enable fleets of cars to be run much more efficiently,n this wo year’s Innovation award at the Glos Business Awards, and further investment from the government’s Innovation Fund. Then there is Gardiners, based by the Cross Keys roundabout, who won a recent award for their footwear wholesalers business. Meanwhile at the gateway to Quedgeley, off Cole Avenue, the buildings around the lake are now oc- cupied by Sanctus, an environmental consultancy employing 50 people already, and creating a green sanctuary. The spread of opportunities, and these are only three of the leading businesses in Quedgeley, for those with the right skills from apprentice- ships and degrees are growing all the time. Dear Resident

Burglary Awareness

Now the clocks are going back and the evenings are getting darker earlier, take some time to assess the security of your property to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary.

The extra hour mean criminals have more time to work under the cover of darkness – take steps to protect your property:

Please consider security devices such as window locks, internal lights on a timer, deadlocks, and external lights on a sensor as well as installing CCTV, digital door- bells and using forensic property marking.

Sign up to Your Community Alerts and we will rapidly notify you when a burglary happens near to you so you can take action to protect your homes. You can sign up using this link: https://www.yourcommunityalerts.co.uk/

Drug Activity

The Neighbourhood Policing Team have been proactively dealing with complaints of drug activity in the Kingsway and Quedgeley areas. This has resulted in success- ful drugs warrants being executed and subsequent arrests being made for posses- sion of illegal drugs. We will proactively seek out and deal with those individuals that continue to possess and distribute illegal drugs.

Identity fraud

Identity fraud is when your personal details are stolen and used to commit fraud. Our advice is don’t throw out anything with your name, address or financial details without shredding it first. If you receive phone call and you are concerned it is a fraud and you are concerned about the source of a phone call, wait five minutes and call the company they claim to be from on a number you know is genuine.

Regards PCSO Rachel Addinall – Quedgeley Policing Team

Both teams are playing in the Gloucester County Girls League and are led by coaches Dave Francis and Colin Simms.

Of the programme, Dave said “we’re delighted to bring girls football to Quedgeley. Having lived and coached in the US, where the game is massive, I know all too well what girls are capable of when it comes to playing the beautiful game. We are ex- tremely grateful for the sponsorship of the Quedgeley Community Trust to cover the kits for our U8 girls team. These girls are passionate players with a real eagerness to learn and are already displaying immense pride when wearing the QCT sponsored jersey’s.” Thank you to Keith Miller for coming to present the new kit to the girls team.

Only two more months until the end of the year but plenty of things have been hap- pening at Quedgeley WI as well as others to look forward to. In September we had a talk and demonstration on the Butterfly Loom. The speaker, Mandy Whitfield, owns a company producing hand-held wooden looms on which to weave wool to make squares that are decorated with knots and then joined together to make bags, blan- kets and cushions. Lots of samples of the different patterns nda some finished items were passed around and at least one of our members has been encouraged to try this new craft.

In October we had our attractive and informative entry in the WI Centenary Exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral with the theme “My WI Your WI” and there are photographs of it on our Facebook page. Some members attended the WI Centenary Service, again at the Cathedral and we were the hosts for the Group Party with a theme of the 1960s. Our October speaker Sheila Henderson and her talk entitled “Tax,Care and Toy Boys” was more about Estate Planning than eligible young men but was still very informative and made us think about Inheritance Tax, Care Home Fees, Wills, Family Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Funeral Plans. In November it is our AGM and Social Evening and December is a Christmas American Supper with entertainment and there is a competition for a home made puppet.

If anyone would like to come along to any of our meetings as a visitor or new member they will be made very welcome. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month at Quedgeley Village Hall and more information can be found on our website www.quedgeleywi.co.uk or on facebook.com/quedgeleywi.

A parade led by the Corps of Drums from the Naval Unit TS Alacrity from Portsmouth led cadets from both Alacrity and TS Ledbury (Hereford) to the church. The Pipes and Drums from St.Andrews led the Army Cadets and Colours from the Emergency Services and other organisations. At the Service, the Army Cadet Colour was placed on the High Altar and blessed by the Chaplain before he handed it to the Chairman of Help if we Can Steve Smith who asked the High Sheriff to present it to the Ensign.
