The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category.

His teammates from Audi Sport Team 85045 Ingolstadt www.audi.com Abt Sportsline, Mattias Ekström, Tom Kristensen and Martin Tomczyk, will go into the race from positions seven, eight and eleven. Local hero Christian Abt (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) in tenth place was the best driver of an Audi A4 DTM with last year’s specifications. Based on the data gathered on Friday, the Audi squad had worked out a good set-up for the special characteristics of the merely 2.3-kilometre long and very bumpy city street circuit. Mattias Ekström confirmed this by setting the second-best time in the morning’s free practice session. However, rain showers setting in before the start of the qualifying practice completely changed the situation. Being out at the right time on the right tyres and with optimal tyre pressure for the respective track conditions was the most crucial factor. Three Audi drivers, Timo Scheider, Mattias Ekström and Tom Kristensen, made it into the top eight on the wet and extremely slippery circuit. In the first section, Christian Abt set the fastest time, while in the second segment the Bavarian had to settle for tenth place. His teammate Alexandre Prémat, who had been the second-quickest driver in dry conditions on Friday, slid into a tyre wall as early as in the first section.

It read as follows: “Johann Baptist Abt takes over blacksmiths and coachworks in Burgstraße, Kempten.” The blacksmith of yore has since developed in ABT Sportsline, the world’s largest automotive aftermarket and performance parts specialist for Audi and VW, one of the most successful international motorsport teams and an innovative electromobility pioneer. The family business is now celebrating its 125th birthday. “Much has changed since the early days – the world, its people, the car, our perspective on things”, says Hans-Jürgen Abt. “One thing, however, has remained constant: Our passion for exciting new technologies, adventure and occasional unconventional methods.” The managing partner is the fourth generation, who is in charge of running the company with now 200 employees that has always been based in the heart of the Allgäu region. “An anniversary like always provides the perfect opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you. After the double victory at Brno, Audi is this time returning to the ‘Motopark’ as the leader of the standings– to contest an event which last year’s victor, Tom Kristensen, regards as his “home race” because Oschersleben is the DTM venue that is closest to his home, Denmark. The Le Mans record winner is ranked in third place of the standings, only five points behind the leader, Mattias Ekström, and two behind Gary Paffett. The 3.667-kilometre circuit at Oschersleben suited the A4 DTM particularly well last year. However, after the double victory at Brno, the four new Audi A4 DTM cars entered by Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline are required to start with ten kilograms of additional ballast. This rule does not apply to the four 2004-spec A4 cars entered by Audi Sport Team Joest. Hence, Rinaldo Capello has a good chance of clinching his first DTM points as well – should this occur, all eight Audi drivers will have points.
