Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit. Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions. Without her, there would be no Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse or Janelle Monáe! Despite having disappeared from the music scene for years, Betty Davis remains a pioneer of feline soul sisters. The ultimate funk goddess. She also brought electricity to a certain Miles Davis who she would go on to marry, if only for a short while. But who are you Betty? Starey Stomana Pukhtana. Picasso's modernist genius swiftly stretched beyond the pictorial and spread into music and dance, two art forms with which the Spanish painter always maintained a close relationship, to the point of influencing composer friends he met along the way. A figurehead of the British prog rock scene with Genesis, Peter Gabriel, who will turn 70 on February 13th, later became a champion of world music and an example of the politically engaged artist, through his label Real World, his Womad festivals and of course the protest song “Biko”, etched into the history books and made famous from the Amnesty International tour concerts.

RS 3131a The Spirituality of Muslim Women Course Outline Instructor: Ingrid Mattson, PhD London and Windsor Community Chair in Islamic Studies [email protected] Department of Theology, Room A227 519-438-7224, ext. 269 *Email is the preferred method of communication. Time and Days: Wednesdays 3:30-6:30 Room: V210 Prerequisites: none Course Description and Goals: In this class we will explore the spirituality of Muslim women past and present. We begin with a study of the portrayal of women in the Qur’an and the lives of female companions of the Prophet Muhammad whose concerns and perspectives helped shape the spiritual development of the early Muslim community. In later centuries, we will look at the roles women have played in the establishment of religious discourses and institutions and discuss challenges Muslim women have faced in fulfilling their spiritual needs in diverse societies. We will consider many more questions, such as how spirituality is embodied by women and the impact of such practices as gender segregation and hijab. Does the elevation of “the feminine” in traditional spirituality contribute to Muslim women’s spiritual empowerment or the contrary? What are the spiritual practices and understandings of major life cycles? How do women understand the spiritual dimensions of marriage and celibacy, motherhood and childlessness, intimacy and abuse? Learning Goals: To know what the Qur’an says about women and gender To understand different hermeneutical approaches to the Qur’an and the Sunnah and various legal methodologies that impact women To be able to identify at least a dozen prominent Muslim women religious leaders in history or contemporary society To be able to discuss the ways in which Muslim women’s spirituality is the same or different as men’s spirituality To identify the way culture and social structures shape and impact Muslim women’s spirituality.

  • The “Autonomy Principle” in Islamic Medical Ethics, with an Emphasis on the Qur‟Ānic Views Ghulām Riḍā Ma„Ārifī1, „Alī Ḥasanniyā2 1
Journal of Contemporary Islamic Studies(JCIS) http://jcis.ut.ac.ir/ Vol. 2, No. 2, Summer & Autumn 2019 Online ISSN: 2645-3290 pp. 223-235 Document Type: Research Paper The “Autonomy Principle” in Islamic Medical Ethics, with an Emphasis on the Qur‟ānic Views Ghulām Riḍā Ma„ārifī1, „Alī Ḥasanniyā2 1. Assistant Professor, Department of Islamic Studies, Shahed University, Iran. 2. Assistant Professor, Department of Qur’ān and Ḥadīth Sciences, Shahed University, Iran. (Received: April 21, 2019 ; Revised: August 10, 2019 ; Accepted: August 24, 2019) Abstract One of the important issues in medical ethics is the way of treating and making decision on a patient‘s treatment, especially if a physician encounters with some limitations to make a decision. In new medical ethics, the ―Autonomy Principle‖ (respect for patient‘s autonomy and individual autonomy) is used to solve the problem; that is, physicians decide on whether to treat a patient or not after providing the necessary information to him/her through his/her participation. The present paper tries to answer this basic question: ―is the autonomy, i.e. respect for self-determination and individual independence, accepted by Islam?‖ and ―what is the Islamic approach towards this issue?‖ This research has sought to find an appropriate response to the question, regarding the Qur‘ānic verses, in order to raise the meaning, degree, validity, and range of ―Autonomy Principle‖ from the point of view of Islam. Methodologically, it is based on library documents, descriptive method, and content analysis. Collecting and reviewing the related religious doctrines, a comprehensive definition of man, his position and responsibilities, and some of his specific characteristics, such as his free will (authority) and its extent, have been detected, which played an important role in reaching the answer of the question.

Investigative Notes on Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall’s Translation of the Qur’anic Surahs’ Names. International Journal of Language and Linguistics. Vol. 7, No. 6, 2019, pp. 286-297. doi: 10.11648/j.ijll.20190706.16 Received : October 7, 2019; Accepted : October 26, 2019; Published : November 5, 2019 Abstract: The Meaning of The Glorious Qur’an of Muhammad Marmaduke is one of the earliest English translations of the Qur’an conducted by Muslims’ translators and the first translation conducted by an English-speaking Muslim scholar. This translation of the Qur’an has been the focus of a number of studies that scrutinise it from different angles. Yet, there has been no thoughtful study dedicated to investigate the issue of Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’anic surahs’ names. Utilising the Contrastive Analysis approach as a theoretical framework, this study aims to fill this gap by assessing the accuracy of the equivalents provided by Pickthall to the 114 Qur’anic surahs’ names. The study consists of an introduction and five sections. It gives a succinct description of the Qur’anic surahs’ names, pinpoints the major features of Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’an, details his own approach in handling the Qur’anic surahs’ names, and analytically discusses the difficulties he encountered when rendering such vital terms of the Qur’an into English.

  • Feminist Theory, Agency, and the Liberatory Subject: Some Reflections on the Islamic Revival in Egypt1
Feminist Theory, Agency, and the Liberatory Subject: Some Reflections on the Islamic Revival in Egypt1 SABA MAHMOOD University of California Berkeley Abstract This article argues that insomuch as feminism is both an analytical and politically prescriptive project, it aims not only to analyze the situation of women in different historical and cultural locations but also to transform their conditions of subjugation. Consequently, femi- nist scholarship tends to accord freedom a normative status, and to emphasize those instances that exemplify women’s desire to be free from relations of subordination. An important consequence of this tendency in feminist scholarship is to limit the conceptualization of agency to acts that further the moral autonomy of the individual in the face of power. Through an examination of the women’s piety movement in Egypt, this article argues for uncoupling the notion of agency from that of resistance as a necessary step in thinking about forms of desire and politics that do not accord with norms of secular- liberal feminism and its liberatory telos. Keywords: Islam, Islamist movement, Islamic revival, feminist theory, gender, moral agency, religious movements. In the last two decades one of the key questions that has occupied many feminist theorists is how should issues of historical and cultural specific- ity inform both the analytics and politics of any feminist project. While this questioning has resulted in serious attempts at integrating issues of sexual, racial, class, and national difference within feminist theory, ques- tions of religious difference have remained relatively unexplored. The vexed relationship between feminism and religious traditions is perhaps most manifest in discussions of Islam.

Sūr’a (plural of Sūr’ah) has been originated from the same terminology.(4) The Qur’ān is consisted of 114 Sūr’ah (5) among which the Sūr’ah Al-Fatīha is the first and Sūr’ah Wal-Nāss is the last.

  • Truth-Making in Early Islam
Truth-Making in Early Islam By Elias Saba When Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses was published in 1988, the book both garnered praise and stirred a political controversy. Yet it did not invent anything as it relied on the very well documented ‘Satanic Verses incident’. Addressing this infamous historical episode, Shahab Ahmed’s work investigates how different interpretive methodologies can quarrel over what constitutes truth and how to make a truth-claim. Reviewed: Shahab Ahmed, Before Orthodoxy: The Satanic Verses in Early Islam, Harvard UP, 2017, 352 p. The Satanic Verses incident has become one of the most infamous episodes in early Islamic history. Although it was only of relatively minor importance in the Islamic heritage, this incident became infamous worldwide through the scandal brought about by Salman Rushdie’s 1988 book, The Satanic Verses. This magical realist novel was at once a critical success and a political controversy. A finalist for the Man Booker Prize, the book was banned in several countries for its supposedly offensive and heretical discussion of the Prophet Muhammad. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini found the book sufficiently heretical to call for the death penalty against Rushdie. The infamy of this affair only heightened the popularity of the book and raised the public’s awareness of Rushdie’s novel. Lost in this debate, however, was the historical memory of the Satanic Verses incident. It was, after all, not a daring 1 invention by Salman Rushdie, but rather a documented and debated incident recounted in Arabic historical sources.1 Shahab Ahmed’s book, Before Orthodoxy: The Satanic Verses in Early Islam, is an attempt to document and discuss all of the historical reports surrounding this now-infamous incident.
