This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today’s responsorial psalm: “The Lord is near to all who call upon him” (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, “For to me life is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today’s Gospel. There we find that God’s love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Dear Parishioners, We extend a heartfelt welcome to Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, the Seventh Bishop of Brooklyn, who will lead us in the liturgy of Thanksgiving on the actual anniversary of the first mass celebrated in the firehouse on 67th Street on September 24th, 1891. We were one of the last parishes established by Brooklyn’s First Bishop, John Loughlin. He chose to begin a parish between St. Michael on 42nd Street and St. Patrick on 95th Street and sent Father Martin Loftus to gather the people in Bay Ridge. Father Loftus was a native of County Mayo, Ireland but studied for the priesthood at the Vincentian run Seminary of Our Lady of Angels on the campus of Niagara University adjacent to Niagara Falls in the Buffalo Diocese. Apparently, Father Loftus wished to honor his Alma Mater by giving his new parish the same name as his Seminary. Today, we are celebrating who we are now in 2017. We are not the numerically large parish that we were during the 1950s and 1960s but we know each other better now. The quality of a parish is measured by the faith, hope, love, compassion and spirit of generosity of its members and I can attest to the fact that those virtues are as present today as they ever were. Today, we renew our intention to proclaim the gospel in word and deed among the people of Bay Ridge and we ask God and His Blessed Mother to watch over us as we do our best to welcome new members and open our hearts to a deeper relationship with Christ. Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone P.S.
