Scholar, humanitarian, spiritual leader of the largest Jewish congregation in the world: Ronald B. Sobel gives life to the prophet's dictum to "Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God." Since his ordination in 1962, Rabbi Sobel has not only walked with God but led thousands of others to Him as well. When he was unanimously elected Senior Rabbi of Manhattan's Temple Emanu-El in 1973, he was the youngest man ever named to this most prestigious and influential of pulpits; he continues to serve that congregation today. He has also assumed le~ership positions in a long list of Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; the American Jewish Committee; the Synagogue Council ofAmerica, the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry, and the Union ofAmerican Hebrew Congregations. But it is not the Jewish community alone which knows his dedication and his faith, for much of his rabbinate has been devoted to strengthening interfaith relations. In 1975 he was the first rabbi to preach from the high pulpit of St. Patrick's Cathedral, and for many years he has served on the Board of Governors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. In 1991 he joined with a group of Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim clergy to create a Partnership of Faith in New York, with the goal of establishing a coalition of clerics throughout the five boroughs. While Rabbi Sobel has followed the prophet's counsel to walk humbly with his God so too has he worked to "do justly and love mercy," as-evidenced in his service to many community organizations. In the early 1980s he helped to found the Yorkville Emergency Alliance,' an interfaith non-political group of men and women working to help the hungry and homeless.: And he has been active as well in such efforts as the Helen Keller Home for the Blind and Daytop Village, a drug rehabilitation program. He is also an honorary director of the New York Society for the Deaf. A cum laude graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a major in philosophy, Rabbi Sobel then earned a Bachelor and Master of Hebrew Letters as well as his Ordination from Hebrew Union College. He was awarded a doctorate by New York University. He has authored five articles for the Encyclopedia Americana and has also published several essays. With admiration for his dedication to God and to God's virtues of justice and mercy, St.John's University is pleased to confer on Ronald B. Sobel, honoris causa, the degree of Doctor of Laws. 1994 Commencement Awards

We embrace the Judeo-Christian ideals of respect for the rights and dignity of every person and each individual's responsibility for the world in which we live. Mission Statement of St John's University, New York Approved by the Board of Trustees. December of 1991 ACADEMIC HERALDRY The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ag~. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning. The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi·stitf yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown, however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow. The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open; it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell· like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains. Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel. The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood· a black shell· like affair of varying size for the three degrees and material to match the gown· i~ silk·lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the color signifying the respective fields of learning. The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows: Arts and Letters ...... White Library Science ...... Lemon Laws ...... Purple Education ...... Light Blue Philosophy ...... Blue Science ...... Golden Yellow Fine Arts ...... Brown Business Administration .... Light Brown Pharmacy . ;...... Green It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the confer· ment of a degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires the blue velvet irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn. Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as follo~-s: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, maroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, ~nite with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St. John's University, bright red with white chevron.
