Any exception to this requirement must be approved by the Head of Upper School. The School recognizes and supports accommodations for students with documented learning disabilities. School policy requires that a Senior must pass all courses in which he or she is enrolled during the Senior year, regardless of any prior fulfillment of the distribution requirements or other factors. Seniors who have failed a one-semester or a year course will be granted a certificate of attendance in June and be given the opportunity to earn the diploma within a specified time subsequent to June of the Senior year. Visual Arts - One credit requirement. Foundation Art (1/2 credit) in grades nine or ten and a half credit to be chosen from elective listing. English - Four credits. English 9 & 10 (full year course) , English 11 & 12 (Fall semester) and one core elective in the Spring semester of each year. RESISTING DIASPORA AND TRANSNATIONAL DEFINITIONS IN MONIQUE TRUONG’S THE BOOK OF SALT, PETER BACHO’S CEBU, AND OTHER FICTION by DEBORA STEFANI Under the Direction of Ian Almond and Pearl McHaney ABSTRACT Even if their presence is only temporary, diasporic individuals are bound to disrupt the existing order of the pre-structured communities they enter. Plenty of scholars have written on how identity is constructed; I investigate the power relations that form when components such as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, class, and language intersect in diasporic and transnational movements. How does sexuality operate on ethnicity so as to cause an existential crisis? How does religion function both to reinforce and to hide one’s ethnic identity? Diasporic subjects participate in the resignification of their identity not only because they encounter (semi)-alien, socio-economic and cultural environments but also because components of their identity mentioned above realign along different trajectories, and this realignment undoubtedly affects the way they interact in the new environment. -

HUNT Abstract From the well known lexical differences between native English speaking countries (e.g. BrE ‘pavement’, AmE ‘sidewalk’, AuE ‘footpath’), to the “striking variations in English which are emerging all over the world” (Crystal, 2003, p. 3), English is a plural language, it is spreading and dominating, and in the process it is changing and adapting to the needs of its new users. This paper outlines the historical development of the English language before discussing the status and role of English in Japan, a country where it has been argued that English is still very much considered “foreign” (Seargeant, 2011). It also considers the extent to which ‘nativization’ has occurred, and situates these thoughts in a global English as an International Language (EIL) context. Tracing its origins to Anglo-Saxon invaders sometime in the fifth century, the language developed through interaction with the indigenous population, and the lexicogrammatical assimilation of Latin, Scandinavian languages, and Norman French. -

This year's conference is transforming into an entirely virtual conference. It will be presented live and in interactive form from May 29th-31st. The innovative program will convey the essence of the in-person Nebula Conference, albeit in an all-online format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Nebula Awards Ceremony will be seen live online by people around the globe,” said Mary Robinette Kowal, SFWA President. “While the circumstances are difficult, we’re excited that the conference is more accessible than when in a physical location.” As part of the celebration of the Nebula Award winners, SFWA has partnered with audio-first entertainment studio Podium Audio to adapt, produce and distribute its 55th Nebula Awards Showcase Anthology, edited by Cat Valente, in audio format. A top publisher of science-fiction and fantasy audiobooks, Podium Audio is on the forefront of discovering new authors and voice artists from the U.S. and around the world. “Since the first publication of the Nebula Anthology in 1966, the yearly collection has only been available in print. Expanding into the world of audiobooks offers new opportunities for expression and outreach,” says Kowal. “We’re delighted to partner with the innovative and experienced team at Podium Audio.” There are multiple writing categories and their respective finalists for the 2020 Nebula Awards listed below and, of course, the Nebula Awards ceremony itself will stream live at 8 pm Eastern on May 30th.
