Letter from Principal We hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Although this is a time of uncertainty, we are committed to providing high-quality learning experiences for all of our students at Carver Military Academy. We are writing today to share our plan to support your child's remote learning while school is closed until April 30th.
Your partnership, feedback, and collaboration are critically important to support your child’s engagement in remote learning. Please take a few moments to read below for information about our plan, expectations for your child, and the ongoing communications and assistance we will provide to keep students engaged, learning, and healthy while schools are closed. Implementation of our remote learning plans will take place on 13 April, immediately after spring break. In order to find assignments for your classes, please go to your GOOGLE Classroom.
What is Carver Military Academy’s plan to provide remote learning for my student during the closure? Our teachers will provide their students daily learning activities and will be available virtually from 8:30am –1:00pm. Monday - Friday to keep students connected and engaged until school re-opens. Expect regular communication and feedback from their assigned teacher on learning activities. Please view our schools website at carvermilitary.org to view your child's lesson plans and their teacher’s daily availability.
What are the school’s expectations for my child while learning at home? During this time, the focus is to encourage students to stay engaged in academic activities and to reinforce learning on a daily basis. Teachers will enter grades in gradebook on a weekly basis, so its important students are engaged each and every day. In addition, routine, encouragement, and aligned expectations between families and teachers are important factors of academic engagement in your home learning environment. We’ve created a Carver Military Academy link with school expectations, tips to help your child focus, and options for support and assistance if your child is struggling with an activity.
How do I access the plan and materials? Our remote learning plans are posted online at carvermilitary.org for families and students. Our website will be updated daily, so please visit often to ensure you have the most up to date information.
What communications and guidance can my child and I expect? Families will receive ongoing school-wide communications as well as a regular schedule for communication and feedback between your child and their teacher(s). This information can be found on our website that will be updated daily.
Thank you for going above and beyond to support your child during this difficult time. Please continue taking care of each other and yourselves as we face this health crisis together. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected], Ms. Durrah at [email protected], Major Striverson at [email protected] or Samuel Davis smdavis@edu.

Guidelines for Parents
We recognize that this is a complicated time for families and the transition to remote learning will be a challenge. Parents will need to think differently about how to support their children’s learning. Some students will thrive in remote learning and others will struggle. The following eight guidelines below are intended to help parents think about what they can do to help their children find success in a remote learning environment. If there are unique challenges, particular needs, or concerns that arise please keep in touch with us.
1—Establish routines and expectations for your child Routine supports children both in terms of learning and sense of calm and wellbeing. Carver Military encourages parents to set regular hours for their children’s school work, to the best of their ability. CMA students will have virtual class sessions during the week and will otherwise have flexible schedules. This will allow parents to establish routines based on what is realistic given their schedules. It is important that parents set these expectations for how their children will spend their days starting as soon as remote learning is implemented, not several days later after it becomes apparent a child is struggling with the absence of routine.
2—Define the physical space for your child’s study Your child may have a regular place for doing homework under normal circumstances, but this space may or may not be suitable for an extended period of time, as will be the case while this Remote Learning Plan is implemented. We encourage families to establish a space/location where their children will learn most of the time. This should be a public/family space, not in a child’s bedroom. It should be a place that can be quiet at times and have internet access, if possible. It should be a space where parents can check in their children’s learning.
3—Monitor communications from your children’s teachers Teachers will communicate with parents through email, when and as necessary. We also encourage parents to have their children explain the various platforms and systems (i.e. Google Classroom and Google Hangouts) teachers are using.
4—Begin and end each day with a check-in with your child Parents are encouraged to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. In the morning, ask what is your child learning today? What are their learning targets or goals? How will they spend their time? What resources do they require? What support do they need? This brief grounding conversation matters. It allows children to process the instructions they’ve received from their teachers. It helps them organize themselves and set priorities.
5—Establish times for quiet and reflection A particular challenge for families with multiple children will be how to manage all of their children’s needs, especially when those children are different ages and have different needs. There may be times when siblings need to work in different rooms to avoid distraction.
6—Remain mindful of your child’s stress or worry
3
Difficult though it may be, do your best not to transfer your stress or worry to your children. They will be out of sorts, whether they admit it or not, and need as much normal routine as parents can provide. As a school, we will do our best to provide resources that support parents with social emotional learning during this time.
7—Monitor how much time your child is spending online CMA does not want its students staring at computer screens for 7-8 hours a day. We ask that parents remember most teachers are not experts in remote learning and that it will require some trial-and-error before we find the right balance between online and offline learning experiences. We thank you in advance for your patience and partnership!
8—Keep your children social, but set rules around their social media interactions The novelty of school being closed will fade quickly when students start missing their friends, classmates, and teachers. Help your children maintain contact with friends. Students may rely more on social media to communicate with friends. Social media apps such as SnapChat, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, or Facebook are not official, school-sanctioned channels of communication. Carver Military Academy asks parents to monitor their children’s use of social media, reminding them to be polite, respectful, and appropriate in their communications and to represent your family’s values in their interactions with others.

CARVER MILITARY ACADEMY REMOTE LEARNING PLAN
During the school closure, Chicago Public Schools’ goal is to provide students with remote learning opportunities to help minimize instructional loss, provide students with routines and structures to help stay engaged and connected, and ensure that students are healthy. Carver Military Academy will meet these goals by implementing the plan below.
This document summarizes our plan by telling you: 1. The minimum amount of time your student should spend in structured academic activity. 2. How we will communicate with you and when learning materials will be posted. 3. What key learning platforms your student will use. 4. How your student can access their teacher, and when they should expect feedback on work submitted. 5. How your student can access learning materials if you don’t have easy access to a computer. 6. How we will communicate with you as a school, along with how your student can get support during the school day if they are stuck on an assignment.

Diverse Learner and Specialized Services
The ultimate goals of the remote learning plan are to provide direction, information, and resources to ensure that: ● All students have opportunities for continued learning that focuses on critical standards and individual goals ● We work to minimize instructional loss ● We provide routines and structures to ensure students and families stay connected to schools and learning and are supported emotionally by the community
Adapting to remote learning will be a challenge for all learners. Routines, structure and connection to our community may ease the anxiety presented to our students and families at this time. The DL team is committed to our students’ well being and success. Diverse Learners will continue to receive the accommodations and modifications provided by their Individualized Education Plans during the Remote Learning Period. Instruction and support will continue to be provided in their classes by your child’s LBS1 instructor and designated paraprofessionals. Service Providers will continue to collaborate with instructors and students to monitor student progress and promote student success. It is still possible and imperative our students have access to meaningful/high-quality educational materials that align to state standards and help achieve their individualized goals. It is imperative that we maintain our personal connections supporting necessary, rigorous academic work in a manner that is respectful of our students’ contexts (their mindset, feelings, responsibilities, etc.). We understand that simplicity is best during this time -- simplicity of the framework, of communication structures, of expectations. We want to support the whole child: mental health, nutritional needs, academic needs, and safety needs.
FAQ Additions: What if my child is a diverse learner (has a 504 or an IEP)? Your child will continue to receive the accommodations and modifications identified in their IEP or 504 plans.
What if I received a Notice of Conference for my child’s meeting and it is dated during the school closure? While in-person meetings are not possible due to necessary health precautions, scheduled IEP meetings can continue during the school closure period through alternate means of communication, such as teleconference or videoconference. All IEP and 504 meetings will be rescheduled. Dr. Parker (Case Manager) will be reaching out via email and/or phone to discuss scheduling meetings remotely. If your contact information needs to be updated, or you have questions regarding your child’s services please Dr. Parker or any member of the DL Department * Please be advised that calls from CMs may appear as “Unknown” or “Restricted”-we will leave an email contact if we have to leave a message.

What procedures should IEP teams follow in order to conduct virtual meetings?
● In order to hold teleconference or videoconference IEP meetings, the IEP team must follow all federal and state guidelines for notifying parents and guardians and obtain parent or guardian c onsent. We can share the legal consents electronically to proceed with meetings. E mail statements of consent are acceptable. ● If a parent or guardian consents to holding a virtual IEP meeting, they must also consent to receive Individualized Education Plan documentation electronically by completing an IEP Document Email Authorization Form in either English or Spanish. ○ With parent or guardian consent, the IEP team can provide the following electronic documents: Notice of Conference, Evaluation Reports (including draft and final copies of the Learning Environment Interventions Form), IEP Documents (including data collection forms), and IEP Progress Reports and Report Cards.
● All IEP team members must be present at any IEP meeting, even if held by alternate means, unless the parent or guardian and the district representative give consent for the excusal of any member from the meeting. Due to the current school closures, consent to excuse an IEP team member can be given electronically. The case manager will document the appropriate consent using the SSM events and IEP notes sections.
Technology Systems to Support Remote Learning
CPS has announced a Pre-K–12 remote learning plan as part of the response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Remote learning brings about the question, how can my child connect with their teacher virtually? CPS G-mail and Google Classroom will power the remote learning plan.
All Google-based communications tools can be accessed with your child’s CPS email account (ending in @cps.edu).
Some potential Google-based communication tools that will be used in the remote learning plan are as follows:
● Google Classroom allows teachers to create a discussion board for their classes, distribute assignments, and give real-time feedback to students. Students can work on assignments in Google Docs and turn them in with a few simple clicks. Most students are currently using Google Classroom. ● Google Chat allows teachers to chat with individual students, groups of students, or create a room to communicate with their class. Google Chat ● Google Hangouts is a video conferencing and chat platform developed by Google. This easy to use app will enhance collaboration and communication between teachers and students.
