There were no waders at Aramoana and large areas of mud flats at Hoopers Inlet were occupied by feeding birds; all rather difficult to count accurately. But the results was very good with all areas surveyed by plenty of counters. Many thanks to all for this very good wader count. Peter Schweigman Better late than never. Apologies ed. 2 Ornithological snippets 5 Chukor were seen & photographed at Ben Lomond on 5th March by Trevor Sleight. A pair of Indian Peafowl of unknown origin put in an appearance near Lake Waihola on 15th March. A moulting Erect-crested Penguin was seen at Jacks Bay (Catlins) on 18th Feb, while another crested penguin was at Anderson’s Lagoon (Palmerston) by Paul Smaill on 2nd March.

[email protected] 03 4640787 Regional Recorder: Jim Wilson PO Box 6145, Dunedin 9059 [email protected] Otago Region Newsletter 5/2016 May 2016 Lagoon bird watching in Wild Dunedin A white heron at Tomahawk Lagoon was the star attraction for twelve visitors to a Birds New Zealand event in the Wild Dunedin festival on 24 April 2016. 2 Starting early from an empty car park, four of us checked who was wading, swimming, diving, flying, eating, calling, sleeping, and standing around. Encouraged by seeing most of those behaviours entirely from birds, even after a full moon over everyone, we got busy. New birders kept us busy over two hours of watching and enquiring. Bird watchers ranged from nine years old to retired couples, and focus adjustments on our three telescopes and shared binoculars soon warmed up. The diversity of watchers caused frequent height adjustments for scope tripods and ornithologists' legs. The white heron stalked nearby shallows, with intent pauses before stabbing down at prey. Most times it got a fish, thrilling people watching through scopes, as the heron's dagger bill held the struggling fish flicking water droplets around before gulping it down. Watchers' reactions varied from wordless sudden gasps of excitement for the heron and shock at the fishes' sudden end, to exclamations of: "Oh ! it got one ! it got a fish ! Hey, see that ...!" Prey fish were native bullies, Gobiomorphus. Bullies, common in the lagoon, are also eaten by kingfishers and shags; and by trout, perch and eels.

ORDER 1. This order may be cited as the Clutha Licensing Trust Order 1955. 2. The area described in the First Schedule hereto is hereby declared to be a licensing Trust district, to be called the Clutha Licensing Trust district (in this order referred to as the Trust district), for the purposes of Part I of the Licensing Trusts Act 1949. 3. There is hereby constituted for the Trust district a Licensing Trust to be called the Clutha Licensing Trust (in this order referred to as the Trust) . 4. For the purposes of elections of members of the Trust, the Trust district is hereby divided into six wards, being the wards described in the Second Schedule hereto. 5. The Trust shall consist of nine elective members, of whom three shall be elected for Ward 1 described in the Second Schedule hereto, two shall be elected for Ward 2 described in that Schedule, and one shall be elected for each of the other wards described in that Schedule. 6. The terms of office of five of the members of the Trust to be elected at the first election of members shall expire, in accordance with section 5 of the Licensing Trusts Act 1949, on the day appointed for the second election of members pursuant to that Act.

    Investigating small town shrinkage in the Clutha District of New Zealand and the local response Mathew Husband A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Master of Planning at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 1 November 2017 i Abstract Throughout history population centres, of any size, have always fluctuated in prosperity, population, and production activities. Current international trends, such as globalisation and urbanisation have created megacities with ever-expanding populations and economies. In contrast, the same trends have begun to cause shrinkage in some parts of the world. Some small towns can be particularly vulnerable to international trends which can destabilise their populations and/ or economies. Multiple examples of this are found in New Zealand such as in towns within the southern district of Clutha. Towns in the Clutha District have been impacted by the rural to urban migration trends seen across the world as well as globalisation which creates large-scale manufacturing as opposed to the relatively small manufacturing offered by small towns. Shrinkage can have negative impacts on small towns and their communities which prompts the need for a response to slow, stop or mitigate the issues related to shrinkage. This research aims to understand the impacts and responses to population loss and economic instability which has taken place in small towns within the Clutha District. The case study towns of Kaitangata and Lawrence were chosen as these towns highlight the varying geographic, social, and economic identities of the Clutha District. The aim of this thesis is to find out how councils, communities, and individuals are affected by economic and demographic change and how they are responding to the impacts of shrinkage.

Other notable freshwater fishing spots include the Owaka, Waitahuna, Tokomairiro and Leithen Burn rivers. Fishing licences are available from your local information centre. Alternatively, try surf casting at the various beaches down the coast. Surf’s up! Some of New Zealand’s best kept surfing secrets are in Clutha Country, including Toko Mouth, Kaka Point, and Cannibal and Purakaunui bays. Motorists should take extra caution on the road to Cannibal Bay which is gravel and extremely narrow in places.

ISBN: 978 0 478 37630 2 Published July 2012 Prepared by Michael Goldsmith, Manager Natural Hazards, Otago Regional Council Community vulnerability to elevated sea level and coastal tsunami events in Otago i Executive summary The Otago coastline extends 480km from Chaslands in the south to the mouth of the Waitaki River in the north. Approximately 124,000 people (64% of Otago’s population) live within five kilometres of this coastline. A number of the communities situated along the coast have a level of hazard exposure to elevated sea level (or storm surge) and tsunami events. This report assesses the vulnerability (rather than the risk) 1 of these coastal communities to these hazards. The report draws on tsunami and storm surge modelling undertaken by National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) for the Otago Regional Council (ORC) in 2007/08, coastal topography data and local knowledge of each community. This information has been used to assess how people and the communities in which they live would be affected during credible, high magnitude tsunami and elevated sea level events. It is intended that this information will: • increase community awareness of elevated sea level and tsunami hazard • inform decision making on the development of warning systems and evacuation plans • assist with the selection of land-use planning and development controls • increase the resilience of infrastructure and utilities (‘lifelines’).
