"Asbestos". Oil on paper. 1982-1983. Signed on the verso. Textured tan paper. Fine condition. Provenance: Estate of a private collector, Long Island, New York, acquired directly from the artist, with the monogram signature verso as requested. Image copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Overall size: 9 3/8 x 10 3/4 in. (238 x 273 mm). [27933] |16000| {R100} 2: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Color offset lithograph USD 5,000 - 6,000 Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "Basquiat @ Gagosian". Color offset lithograph. 1986. Signed in black marker. Edition unknown, presumed small. Cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Condition: folds (as issued?), toning verso, else very good. A rare poster. No auction records located. For the exhibition entitled "Jean-Michel Basquiat" at the Larry Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, January - February, 1986. This was Basquiat's last show at Gagosian and his last on the West Coast. Image copyright © The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat/ADAGP, Paris, ARS, New York, 2013. Overall size: 39 3/8 x 26 1/2 in. (1000 x 673 mm). [28126] |3000| {R100} 3: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Color lithograph USD 2,000 - 2,500 Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "Hamlet". Color lithograph. 1987. Signed in black marker, lower left. Edition unknown, probably very small. Very light cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Very good condition. Basquiat posters are rare. We have located only 11 auction sales of his "lifetime" posters at auction, and not our example, which has not been offered before at auction. Issued for the Hartford Stage's production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" which ran from October 3 to November 7, 1987, Hartford, Connecticut. Image copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Overall size: 39 x 25 1/4 in. (991 x 641 mm). [28409] |1200| {R100} 4: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Color silkscreen (?) front USD 4,000 - 5,000 Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "Quetzalcoatl [autographed and annotated exhibition catalogue]". Color silkscreen (?) front and back covers. 1984. Signed in black marker on the inside front cover. Condition: the catalogue cover is creased upper and lower right corners, contents very good. A scarce catalogue and rare when signed, especially annotated. Basquiat's annotation clearly means that one should look at the image on the back cover of the catalogue to see the entire composition. As is, it is split in two (see the color lithograph issued in 1985 by the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, for its exhibition of the same show which ran from February 9 to March 31, 1985, to view the entire image). This catalogue was issued for the traveling exhibition entitled "Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings, 1981-1984" initiating at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, August 11 to September 23, 1984. Numerous color illustrations, approximately 40 pages, published by The Fruitmarket Gallery. Images copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Overall size: 11 11/16 x 8 5/8 in. (297 x 219 mm). [28123] |2000| {R100} 5: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Original offset lithograph USD 4,000 - 5,000 Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "Rammellzee vs. K-Rob [first edition, first printing]". Original offset lithograph record jacket & record. 1983. Signed in black marker in Basquiat's crown logo, upper center recto. Edition of 500 (original pressing). Thick jacket paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Jacket in very good condition; some minor creasing lower right and upper right; vinyl and sleeve in fine condition. Please note that our example is from the original first edition, first printing/pressing produced during Basquiat's lifetime. The album was later reprinted after his lifetime. Rare and highly sought after. Due to the rarity of its original pressing, this album has been called the Holy Grail of rap records. A search of auction records going back 28 years yields no signed versions. The album contains "Beat Bop," a hip hop single by American rappers Rammellzee and K-Rob, produced by Basquiat and originally released in 1983 by record label Tartown. Initially distributed merely as a test pressing, it is notable for being featured in the hip-hop documentary film "Style Wars" and having the cover, as well as the record label (both sides), designed by Basquiat. The result of a disagreement between Rammellzee and Basquiat, the track has been cited as having an influence on artists such as the Beastie Boys and many experimental hip hop artists due to its chaotic, abstract sound. Color offset lithograph. 1988. Signed in black marker, lower left. Edition c1,000. White heavy smooth wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Very good to fine condition. Scarce and highly desirable. The auction record for a signed impression of this lithograph is $8,055 (£5,000) at Bonhams, London, November 19, 2013, lot #136. Designed entirely by Basquiat and issued as the poster for his exhibition at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris, January 4 to February 19, 1988. Image copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Overall size: 28 15/16 x 20 1/2 in. (735 x 521 mm). [28410] |2400| {R100} 7: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT - Original offset lithograph USD 2,500 - 3,000 Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). "The Offs: First Record [first edition, first printing]". Original offset lithograph record jacket & record. 1984. Signed and with the monogram in black marker, upper center verso. Small edition. Stiff album cover stock paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Good to very good condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: See articles by Glenn O'Brien in "Interview Magazine" May, 1985, Angela Holm in "NY Arts Magazine" March/April, 2008, and Angela Holm & Wu Ziru in "Art Today" February, 2008. Provenance: Estate of a private collector, Manhattan. Please note that our example is from the original first edition, first printing/pressing produced during Basquiat's lifetime. The album was later reprinted after his lifetime in a large edition. The most recent auction sale we could find was for $1,397 at Wright, Chicago, July 13, 2013, lot #144 (an unsigned example). The auction record for an unsigned example of this album cover appears to be $2,914 (€1,850) at Kapandji Morhange, Paris, April 15, 2008, Lot 102. The mixed media drawing of this image sold at Sotheby's, New York, 11/10/2011, for $302,500. Our example is the black vinyl (also issued with clear and white vinyl) with the original liner and accompanied by a C.D. Presents form, included with each impression. The cover was a part of the exhibitions "LP Show" 2003, New York, NY - MOMA / Exit Art; "Vinyl - Records and Covers by Artists" in 2005 in Bremen, Germany at Neues Museum Weserburg; in 2006 in Barcelona, Spain, and 2007 in Porto, Portugal. Pressing by Bill Smith Custom Records, El Segundo, California. Published by David Ferguson, C.D. Presents. Includes vinyl record. Image copyright © Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Signed and annotated in black marker, upper center. Edition unknown, probably small. Light cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Fine condition. A rare poster, very rare when signed. No non-internet auction sales located. We did find an example offered with pre-sale estimates of $5,000/7,000 at artnet auctions, December 20, 2012, apparently going unsold. Issued for the highly important exhibition entitled "Jean-Michel Basquiat" at Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, November 28, 1986 to January 25, 1987. Basquiat died on August 12, 1988. His "To Repel Ghosts" series takes its title "after the Swiss diplomat Claudio Caratsch, who worked for many years in Africa, explained to Basquiat that often African art and artifacts served the everyday functions of repelling ghosts. In 1986’s acrylic on wood, resembling a boarded up window or storefront, Basquiat paints the phrase across the middle panel of wood and underneath places a “TM” (for "trademarked"). Like most hip-hop artists, Basquiat was acutely aware of branding’s value; the utilitarian function of everyday art and artifact (“to repel ghosts”) becomes an advertising slogan in a proprietary field that uses, abuses, and ultimately disabuses artists of the romance of art as above and beyond market forces. But oil works using the same slogan and from the same year show Basquiat effacing the phrase, placing black paint over the ghosts, in effect repelling (etymologically, to push back) the repelling of ghosts, as if trying to rescue the idea’s intention from profane sloganeering."

January 2020 The Studiowith ART HIST RY KIDS Pop Art with Roy Lichtenstein Observe | Discuss | Discover | Create | Connect Pop Art with The Studiowith Roy Lichtenstein ART HIST RY KIDS INTRODUCTION The art of the ordinary Roy Lichtenstein’s successful art career was based on one simple idea – creating fine art inspired by images we see everyday. His art captures the ordinary things that surround us – advertisements, comic books, the painting of other famous artists like Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, and Monet, and even Micky Mouse cartoons. He took these ideas and recreated them on a larger than life scale. Most of his can- vases are grand and oversized – they are truly bold and impactful when seen in person! He also infused little bits of commentary in his art, and he became known for his skillful use of parody. You don’t need to study every piece of art that’s included in this guide. Feel free to choose just a few that are most interesting to your kids. A range of subject matter is included here, but if some of these paintings are too intense for your kids– just skip them for now, and come back to them when they are older! There’s no hurry, and there are plenty of paintings included here that are perfect for young kids. Pop Art looks out into the world. This is your week to look closely at the “ art and chat about it. We’ll learn all It doesn’t look like a painting of about Lichtenstein and his art next something, it looks like the thing week.

Roy Lichtenstein, sociedad moderna como expresión artística. Rocio Castillo Rojas.

Hva slags tradisjon benyttes i hans verk?

Abstract: During the 19th and 20th centuries, the artistic representation of the national identity of Mexicans went through processes of denial, vindication and finally exaltation, based on the demands of the different political and cultural contexts of the country and the relationship of dependence with the ideals of European art. It was not until the early 20th century that it found its full exaltation thanks to the impact of the Mexican Revolution and the progression of Mexican muralism that endowed it with a historical, indigenist and political perspective.
