Ample margins. Very fine printing quality. Very good to fine condition. Image size: 8 1/8 x 7 7/8 in. (206 x 200 mm). Authorized and supervised by Koppitz shortly before his death in 1936. [25832-2-800] 2: CLEMENTINE HUNTER - Zinnias in a Blue Pot USD 3,500 - 4,000 Clementine Hunter (American, 1886/1887-1988). "Zinnias in a Blue Pot". Gouache on paper. c1973. Signed lower right. Very good to fine condition; would be fine save a few very small paint spots, upper rght. Overall size: 15 3/8 x 11 3/4 in. (391 x 298 mm). Clementine Reuben Hunter, a self-taught African-American folk artist, was born at Hidden Hill, a cotton plantation close to Cloutierville, Louisiana. When she was 14 she moved to the Melrose Plantation in Cane River County. She is often referred to as "the black Grandma Moses." Her works in gouache are rare. The last auction record of her work in that medium that we could find was "Untitled," sold for $3,000 at Sotheby's New York, 12/19/2003, lot 1029. Modernism for the Masses: Painters, Politics, and Public Murals in New Deal New York Jody Patterson PhD Thesis History of Art University College London 1 • Declaration I, Jody Patterson, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This research project is the first comprehensive study to address the relations between modem art, leftist politics, and the New Deal federal art initiatives in New York City during the turbulent years of the Great Depression. While this period in American art is largely associated with the dominance of figurative works and the promotion of what was perceived as a tradition of native realism, the art scene was considerably more factional and complex than canonical narratives indicate. Significantly, the use of a modernist visual vocabulary was not nearly so marginal as current art-historical scholarship continues to suggest. This project explores the ways in which artists with varying degrees of commitment to the left, such as Stuart Davis, Arshile Gorky, and Balcomb Greene, negotiated a rapprochement between modernist aesthetics and leftist politics within a complex cultural field deeply divided by contending ideologies. Specifically, it examines these relations with respect to public muralism, an artfOlm that underwent a significant transformation during the decade, emerging as a vital manifestation of revolutionary popular art and serving as an exemplary means of bringing art -

Abstraction Unframed: Abstract Murals In New York, 1935-1960 Abstract In the decades around World War II, a number of abstract painters sought to “unframe” their abstractions and expand them into wall-filling murals. This dissertation analyzes moments from the history of unframed abstraction during modernism’s rise and popularity in the United States, from ca. 1935 to ca. 1960, in and around New York. Scholars have generally treated such murals as large-scale paintings rather than murals; moreover, they have located American abstraction’s growing scale firmly in the postwar years. This dissertation revises these views by examining the rich history of abstract wall painting across the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, and situating the murals within the architectural, social, and institutional contexts of their sites. Installed on the walls of public houses, hospitals, private homes, and office buildings, these murals raised urgent questions about art’s place in daily life, abstraction’s relationship to decoration, and collaboration between architects and painters. Using archival sources and period literature, it reconstructs the spatial and visual logic of the murals, many of which are now lost or altered. -
