Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois to Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway. The second of six children, Ernest enjoyed an adventurous boyhood, fishing and hunting with his father in the northern woods of Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School where he excelled in his classes, particularly English. He tried his hand at football and swimming, edited the school paper (the Trapeze), and contributed pieces to the school's literary magazine (the Tabula). After graduating high school, Ernest traveled to Kansas City and worked as a cub reporter for The Kansas City Star. In 1918, he began service as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. On July 8, he was wounded at Fossalta on the Italian Piave while delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and postcards to soldiers. He married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson on September 3, 1921. The newlyweds soon entered the literary community of Paris, living off of Hadley's trust fund and Ernest's pay as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. The 1920's were extremely productive writing years for Hemingway. Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923, In Our Time in 1925. In 1926, The Torrents of Spring and the widely successful novel, The Sun Also Rises were published. -

Ernest Hemingway Global American Modernist
Ernest Hemingway Global American Modernist Lisa Tyler Sinclair Community College, USA Iconic American modernist Ernest Hemingway spent his entire adult life in an interna- tional (although primarily English-speaking) modernist milieu interested in breaking with the traditions of the past and creating new art forms. Throughout his lifetime he traveled extensively, especially in France, Spain, Italy, Cuba, and what was then British East Africa (now Kenya and Tanzania), and wrote about all of these places: “For we have been there in the books and out of the books – and where we go, if we are any good, there you can go as we have been” (Hemingway 1935, 109). At the time of his death, he was a global celebrity recognized around the world. His writings were widely translated during his lifetime and are still taught in secondary schools and universities all over the globe. Ernest Hemingway was born 21 July 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, also the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most famous modernist architects in the world. Hemingway could look across the street from his childhood home and see one of Wright’s innovative designs (Hays 2014, 54). As he was growing up, Hemingway and his family often traveled to nearby Chicago to visit the Field Museum of Natural History and the Chicago Opera House. Because of the 1871 fire that destroyed structures over more than three square miles of the city, a substantial part of Chicago had become a clean slate on which late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century architects could design what a modern city should look like. -

“THE ITINERANT AMERICAN TRAVELLER” : SETTINGS AND LOCALES IN ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S FICTION - Somdatta Mandal Ernest Hemingway is arguably the most popular American novelist of this century. Few writers have lived as colourfully as him, and his career could have come out of one of his adventure novels. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Theodore Dreiser, and many other fine novelists of the twentieth century, Hemingway came from the U.S. Midwest. Born on the 21st of July 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway spent his childhood vacations in Michigan on hunting and fishing trips. He volunteered for an ambulance unit in France during World War I, was wounded and hospitalized for six months. After the war, as a war correspondent, he became part of the expatriate community in Paris, wrote of bullfighting in Spain, war on the Italian front, the Spanish Civil War, game hunting in Africa, rarely setting his key novels in the continental United States. Explaining his global aims, Hemingway wrote in 1933 to his mother-in-law, Mrs. Pfeiffer: “I am trying to make, before I get through, a picture of the whole world - or as much of it I have seen.” This paper tries to analyse how Hemingway’s fiction is “a picture of the whole world” and pitted against the various episodes of his chequered career, becomes an illuminating study, as the novels and short stories then appear to reflect the life history of their author and consequently reveal the plane of reality that the author desires to represent. Both place and story have to do with where we are, with location, but the where of each is distinct. -

Those we remember and visit sometimes when we are asleep and dreaming. They are as lovely at night as they were when we were children. If you ever go back to see them they are not there. But they are as fine in the night as they ever were if you have the luck to dream of them….In Africa when we lived on the small plain in the shade of the big thorn trees near the river at the edge of the swamp at the foot of the great mountain we had such countries. We were no longer, technically children although in many ways I am quite sure that we were.” - True at First Light After completing Winner Take Nothing, Ernest Hemingway fulfilled his ambition expressed in The Sun Also Rises of “going to British East Africa to shoot.” Having received $25,000 for a safari paid by Uncle Gus, Hemingway and his second wife Pauline travelled to Africa for big game hunting in the winter of 1933. Africa had always fascinated Hemingway. His son Patrick opines that probably the impression that Teddy Roosevelt’s writing about Africa made on his father as a young fellow drew him to his first safari. According to his biographer, Jeffrey Meyers, (261-262) the Hemingways set sail from Marseilles and arrived at Mombasa on December 8th. From there they travelled inland to Nairobi, spent a few days hunting near Philip Percival’s farm at Machakos (twenty miles from Nairobi), and on December 20 started south to the Serengeti plain in Tanganyika. -

Call for Papers Ernest Hemingway Society Panels 2014 American Literature Association 25th Annual Conference May 22-25, 2014 Washington, DC 1. Ernest Hemingway vs. the United States Government Due to the location of this year’s ALA conference in the nation’s capitol, it seems a prime opportunity to examine Ernest Hemingway’s often cantankerous relationship with all things governmental and political. From situations like his continual irritation with the Internal Revenue Service to his investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hemingway often chaffed at bureaucracy and governmental oversight. This panel seeks papers that explore any aspects of Hemingway’s interactions with the American government or American politics, whether positive, negative, or any degree in-between. Please send your 250 word proposal and a brief CV to Professor Sara Kosiba at [email protected] by January 1st, 2014. 2. Re-evaluating Hemingway’s Nonfiction Ernest Hemingway’s nonfiction has perpetually lagged behind his fiction in the academy for several years, with many works being put aside in favor of his novels, short stories and novellas. This panel will seek to evaluate the cultural, artistic, and academic worth of Hemingway’s nonfiction output as it pertains to his fiction and literary career. Because of the unique genre of Hemingway’s nonfiction, the panel will seek to establish the author’s style in regards to this genre. How does his nonfiction separate itself from works of similar subjects or periods? How does his work elevate the genre? Hopefully this panel will add to a growing bibliography of Hemingway scholarship concerned with the nonfiction and its impact on Hemingway studies. -

Lee Greene Joseph Flora ABSTRACT Marc Kevin Dudley: DRAWING THE (COLOR)LINE: HEMINGWAY’S AMERICA, AFRICA AND THE QUESTION(ING) OF AUTHORITY (Under the Direction of Dr. Townsend Ludington) My examination asserts that Ernest Hemingway’s modernity lies beyond mere stylistic technique and aesthetic concerns and finds itself in what perhaps is an inadvertent appreciation of W.E. B. Du Bois’ prognostication that race would be the pervasive issue for a “progressive” nation looking to the first decades of the twentieth century. I contend that Hemingway not only shares Faulkner’s concerns with the issue of race in America, but that he takes them well beyond the bounds of the South or any particular region and extends them to the rest of the nation. Little to nothing has been said about Hemingway’s investment in issues of race; this examination intends to end that relative silence. Hemingway’s marked interest in race (de)formation is closely aligned to a vested national interest in and an anxiety over a rapidly changing American racial topography and issues of American (White) identity. The works in this examination become then an expression of what I will call a collective angst in the wake of a perpetually fading color line and, correspondingly, an ever-eroding Anglo power structure. -

Cambridge University Press 978-1-108-49484-7 — The New Hemingway Studies Edited by Suzanne del Gizzo , Kirk Curnutt Excerpt More Information introduction Hemingway in the New Millennium Suzanne del Gizzo and Kirk Curnutt A recent headline in the Dallas News book-review section makes an eye- catching case for reading a new literary biography: Ernest Hemingway: Writer, Adventurer, Jerk – And Still Fascinating1 Oddly enough, the “J” word does not appear in the actual review, suggest- ing some anonymous copy editor in the land of big oil may harbor animosity against the author of A Farewell to Arms (1929) and The Old Man and the Sea (1952). But the assumption that Ernest Hemingway is an intriguing figure despite – or perhaps because of – his reputation for gladiatorial truculence is hardly limited to this particular attention- grabber. It is a commonplace throughout popular culture, as a simple Google search will attest. “Love him or hate him,” reads the lede of a representative Internet article, “Ernest Hemingway was a genius in his craft. But that doesn’t change the fact that, at times, he was an assh*le.” The title of the link – which carries a viewer to this penetrating bit of cyber- journalism, published on a website specializing in “listicles” (infotainment articles written in the form of numbered or bulleted lists) – is “11 Times Ernest Hemingway Was a Huge Jerk.”2 We need not look solely to flippant headlines or “clickbait” for this opinion; it is a mainstay of “serious” discourse, too. Another review of the same biography assessed by the Dallas News attributes the cultural fixation with Hemingway to his polarities: he “suffered, experiencing pain almost in the same measure that he experienced pleasure. -
