Exploration in Imagination: The Walt Disney Silly Symphony Cartoons and American Animation in the 1930s By Kendall Wagner In the 1930s, Americans experienced major changes in their lifestyles when the Great Depression took hold. A feeling of malaise gripped the country, as unemployment rose, and money became scarce. However, despite the economic situation, movie attendance remained strong during the decade.1 Americans attended films to escape from their everyday lives. While many notable live-action feature-length films like The Public Enemy (1931) and It Happened One Night (1934) delighted Depression-era audiences, animated cartoon shorts also grew in popularity. The most important contributor to the evolution of animated cartoons in this era was Walt Disney, who innovated and perfected ideas that drastically changed cartoon production.2 Disney expanded on the simple gag-based cartoon by implementing film technologies like synchronized sound and music, full-spectrum color, and the multiplane camera. With his contributions, cartoons sharply advanced in maturity and professionalism. The ultimate proof came with the release of 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the culmination of the technical and talent development that had taken place at the studio. The massive success of Snow White showed that animation could not only hold feature-length attention but tell a captivating story backed by impressive imagery that could rival any live-action film. However, it would take nearly a decade of experimentation at the Disney Studios before a project of this size and scope could be feasibly produced. While Mickey Mouse is often solely associated with 1930s-era Disney animation, many are unaware that alongside Mickey, ran another popular series of shorts, the Silly Symphony cartoons. -

Drafting Disney for Victory: Animation, Propaganda, and Political Resistance, 1941-1942. (Under the direction of DR. MARK WILSON) History has forgotten animation, and film companies are often complicit in failing to acknowledge its influence on our social and cultural history. Walt Disney came of age in the film industry during the Golden Age of Hollywood, an era that coincided with a world stage set for war and conflict. The threat of Nazi Germany was felt both home and abroad, and the United States struggled with indecision on whether or not to support its European allies or remain isolationist. When the Second World War began, the American response was lukewarm with Lend-Lease being the only acceptable political means of interference in the European conflict. Walt Disney, struggling over lack of profits due to war-related distribution overseas, sought US Government contracts for morale and instructional films to keep his company afloat and his artists paid. Though Disney’s popularity and success in Hollywood in the late 1930s should have made him an easy sell to politicians, he was largely met with distrust over questions of cost and the future viability of animation in government use. -

However, this has not always been the case. For example, during World War II, animations were also produced as instruments for political propaganda as well as educational material for adult audiences. In this thesis, the history of the production of animations in the United States of America will be reviewed, especially as the years of World War II are concerned. -

3 Pars Pro Toto Character Animation and the Work of the Anonymous Artist Everyone does his or her task on the conveyor belt, performing a partial function without grasping the totality. —Siegfried Kracauer1 The single frame is the basic unit of film just as bricks are the basic unit of brick houses. —Robert Breer2 DELIBERATE MISTAKES In late March 1937, in order to meet the booming demand for Popeye cartoons, the management at Fleischer Studios called for the production process to be sped up. In-betweeners, the animators tasked with drawing the stages of movement that come in between key poses, were expected to double their daily output, from twenty sketches per day to forty.3 But tensions between management and labor at the studio were running high, and the in-betweeners did not comply. Instead, they countered with a “slowdown” strike, which meant, effectively, continuing to produce drawings at the regular rate.4 In the month that followed, fifteen anima- tors were fired for participating in the slowdown, and on May 6 the Commercial Artists and Designers Union authorized a full walkout of the studio. The story of what happened next has already been told, as have the stories of other labor conflicts in the US animation industry—most notably, the 1941 strike at Walt Disney Studios.5 But I want to focus on what didn’t happen. By this I do not mean a counterfactual history, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. Rather, I wish to imagine what is left unsaid in these narratives, which tell us only what went on behind the scenes. -

Living Objects: African American Puppetry Essays. 13. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/ballinst_catalogues/13 “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green”: Greenface and the Jazzy Frog Trope by Paulette Richards Manohla Dargis, who reviewed The Princess and the Frog for The New York Times on November 25, 2009, opens by quoting the title of the 1970 lament Joe Raposo composed for Kermit the Frog: “It’s not easy being green, the heroine of The Princess and the Frog discovers.” Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, and other African American performers of the 1970s took this Sesame Street standard and made it into a reflection on black experience and identity. Louisiana poet Jericho Brown’s poem “Letter to Kermit from the Swamp” extends this reflection. “But to judge from how this polished, hand-drawn movie addresses, or rather strenuously avoids, race,” Dargis continues, “it is a lot more difficult to be black, particularly in a Disney animated feature.” Many of the reader responses rejected Dargis’s comments as “cynical.” Yet cartoon representations of African Americans and African American cultural forms have long generated troubling images because American animation is rooted in blackface minstrelsy. -

Mayer 1906-According to most sources, the first continuous, full-length narrative feature film (defined as a commercially-made film at least an hour in length) was Charles Tait's biopic of a notorious outback bushranger, The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906, Australia)- Australia was the only country set up to regularly produce feature-length films prior to 1911.- 1907-Griffith begins working for Edision- Edwin S. All of them are based on special circumstances which are indispensable to understand the beginning, development, and success of this legendary figure. In Chapter One, there is a clear explanation of Disney´s genealogy from 1824 until 1903, his family, education, jobs, voluntary activities, personal life, some exemplifications of his first attempts at artistic talent, and his death. In Chapter Two, there are some definitions of animated cartoons. We analyze the first optical toys as a great asset in the progress of cartoons. Additionally, there is a description of some Disney´s contributions to motion pictures. In Chapter Three, there is a description of Disney´s imagination which is based on folk literature. There is an analysis relied on some of the most important Disney´s creations. In Chapter Four, there is a description of the establishment of the Disney Company in Hollywood.
