Throw in John’s contracting, watering (what water?), the kids riding, horse shows, my sister’s wedding and a few Goulburn Square commitments and I think we can be labelled “dysfunctional” but very “functional”.

The Spanish Sport Horse (SSH) was used in this study as an example to develop a method to ascertain the influence of parental breeds on particular performances by linking their parental genetic contribution with the individual phenotype value computing the optimal breed contribution for each trait evaluated in eventing. Data included 1220 eventing records from 210 SSH animals. The genetic contribution of six main founder populations were computed for each SSH: the Spanish Purebreed (SPB), Arab Horse (A), Thoroughbred (TB), Selle Francais¸ (SF), German breeds (G) and North(-west) European (N) breeds. For this analysis we used BLUP (best linear unbiased predictor) animal models for five defined traits and for the total score. The genetic contribution as linear and quadratic adjustment and the interaction between genetic contributions were included as covariates in the genetic model to separate the possible combining ability from the breeding values. The optimal breed genetic contribution for each trait was maximised by using a simplex method.

For our analyses, we considered all Hanoverian mares born from 1992 to 2005 with available studbook inspection data. Genetic parameters were estimated univariately for eight routinely scored conformation traits (head, neck, saddle position, frontlegs, hindlegs, type, frame, and general impression and development), and height at withers from studbook inspections, in a linear animal model using Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML). Genetic evaluation was subsequently performed using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction. To investigate the effect of correcting for the proportion of genes of foreign breeds, two different models were used for the analyses. In Model 1, the fixed effect age at studbook inspection, and the random effect date-place interaction were considered. In Model 2, proportions of genes of Thoroughbred, Trakehner and Holsteiner were additionally included as fixed effects. Heritabilities of analyzed conformation traits and withers height ranged in both models between 0.10 and 0.57, with standard errors of ≤0.01. Pearson correlation coefficients determined between breeding values of corresponding traits using Model 1 and 2 were highly positive (>0.99), indicating little effect of the model on the results of genetic evaluation.

The demand to use more “blood” comes from all big riding horse registries today, and buzzwords like “thoroughbred brings miracles” have not only been set into stone (Count Lehndorff’s famous phrase can be found at the entrance to the Graditz State Stud office building!). But what exactly does that mean? Why would we look for thoroughbreds? And what might good infusion look like? It is more than just beauty and stamina that all warmblood breeds get out of utilizing special blood (thoroughbred stands for English, Arabian, Angloarabian and any other of the refinement breeds). Where are the weaknesses of warmbloods today, in terms of conformation, soundness, mind and athleticism? Without thoroughly assessing these points, no influx of outside blood will “bring miracles”. And where is the strength in today’s warmblood breeds, often as a result from early TB infusion during the 50s and 60s of the 20th century in Germany. Are the conditions the same today? Hardly so, the times of farm horses are finally over, and we have created the ultimate sport partner, which we demand to be mature at 2 years of age, ready for the big stallion presentations in January of each year. Movement, probably the one feature “improved” the most, has turned out to almost grotesque proportions, and the flavor of the day seems to be “bigger, higher, further, better”.
