    TRANSNATIONAL MEDIATRANSNATIONAL EVENTS In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons – or interpretations of them – were connected to dis- cursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history. TRANSNATIONAL MEDIA EVENTS In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of The MOHAMMED CARTOONS and the the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada. The book looks at the coverage of the car- IMAGINED CLASH of CIVILIZATIONS toons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media’s rela- tions to immigration policy, and issues of integration. Through this approach, the book aims at a nuanced understanding of the cartoon controversy itself as well as at more general insights into the role of the media in contemporary transnational and transcultural relations.     CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This first chapter outlines the main background and problem identification as the introductory gate of the research in order to have a better a comprehension toward the research topic. I.1. Background In mass communication, the written culture has progressively been overshadowed by an audiovisual culture. Parsa (2004) explains that in the present day, what was previously pages worth of documentation could easily be told in a 2-hour movie or a 60-minute documentary. An emphasis on visual messages does not necessarily mean that words are less important. The most powerful and meaningful messages are combined with words and pictures. Considering the rapid developments in technology, we are gradually moving toward a visually mediated society. The world has been caught up in an ever-flowing process, which can only be explained through the unique rules of an ‘audio-visual language’ with the invention of photographs, cinemas and televisions, which are used to record both still and moving images, although the ‘written language’ is still remains fundamental to the construction of meaning and the meaning itself. To facilitate a better understanding toward the written narratives, supporting images can be found in cinemas, newspapers, magazines, books, posters, computer screens, television screens, clothes and even restaurant menus. (Parsa 2002, 844). Image has in fact a dual nature, being both concrete and capable of expressing larger meanings symbolically and metaphorically as it speaks within an experiential, assosiationistic, and holistic logic (Barry 1997, 122). Parsa (2004) tries to break down the strength of visual image that differs from written text, as quoted from Schneider & Raue: 1 Visual image is neither good nor bad information compared to texts.

    The Theology of South Park As much as they hate each other, the one thing that Osama bin Laden and George W. Bush have in common is a theological understanding of a world being divided between the forces of good and evil with each believing he is clearly on the side of good. President Bush sees himself as most strongly influenced by Jesus Christ, a compassionate conservative who responds to what he sees as a completely unprovoked attack with a mixture of care packages and bombs. Bin Laden, who considers himself one of the true followers of Mohammed, believes that he is clearly on a mission to cleanse the infidels who have disrespected sacred monuments, supported oppressive governments, and kept his people in extreme poverty. Neither they nor their followers can see any shades of gray. You're either for us or against us; for freedom or tyranny; with the infidels or the pious. And both lay a strong claim of having God's blessings. This, of course, is not a new rhetorical strategy; throughout time, many countries have tried to legitimize their interests by calling forth God as a sponsor. Voltaire calls this practice into question throughout Candide as does Mark Twain in his short story, "The War Prayer." The absurdity of believing too fully in a system that draws clear lines between good and evil was also evident to Eugene Ionesco when, during the second world war, he witnessed the consequences of a blind faith in fascism, a system that fully aligned itself with God's blessing and thus did not allow for uncertainty, shades of gray, or a sense of humor.

    ISL M20/REL M20 RE: Resubmission of GE Application for designation in “Foundations of Society and Culture Areas” To the GE Committee: I’m writing to resubmit my course materials for “ISL M20/REL M20-Introduction to Islam” for designation as a GE course which fulfills requirements for the following Foundations of Society and Culture areas: Historical Analysis and Social Analysis. I received the following feedback from the committee after their review of the course material for designation in these categories last year. (I would like to add here that due to some administrative turn over in different departments, the feedback was not conveyed to me until a few weeks ago. I am therefore taking this opportunity to resubmit the GE application with the clarification sought by the committee.): The committee was impressed by the course and sees it as a better fit into either Social or Historical Analysis than Literary Cultural or Philosophical Linguistic Analysis. However, the use of primary sources for Historical Analysis was unclear. The committee felt the course was missing a clear explanation of an introduction to historical or social methodologies. Clarification: The “Introduction to Islam” course is thematically organized such that I cover nine main topics over the course of the quarter. These include “Late Antiquity and Pre-Islamic Arabia,” “Prophet Muhammad and his Legacy,” “The Qur’an,” “Sufism,” and “Islamic legal interpretation,” among others. In reviewing each one of these topics, I follow the following schema: a) An overview which covers the history of the topic from understandings/trajectories in early Islam up to the modern period b) An exploration of contemporary approaches to the topic and how it figures in confessional and non-confessional discourses c) An analysis of one or more primary source(s) relevant to the selected topic and one or more academic research articles.
