=CULTURAL = INDONESIAN PROGRAM (GRADES P-Yr11)

The following activities are offered in the CERES Indonesian Village. Content and presentation are adjusted according to age level and language skills. Each activity runs for approximately 50 minutes. All activities are taught by trained Indonesian tutors. Content can vary slightly depending on whether the presenter is male or female and what part of they come from. Activities can be taught in Indonesian if requested.

BATIK MAKING  Learn about the important role of in Indonesian life.  Design and create a small piece of Indonesian batik to take home using hot wax and dyes.

WAYANG & ANGKLUNG  Experience Kulit (Javanese shadow puppet) performance.  Play a Sundanese instrument called the Angklung .

DANCE  Learn a traditional Indonesian : Plate, Candle, Balinese or (traditional Acehnese dance).

BECAK & GAMES  Play various Indonesian games including gassing (spinning top), bola bekel (bekel ball), sepak takraw (takraw ball), karambol (billiard board game) and congklak.  Ride and drive the village becak (bike used as public transport) and discuss its importance in day to day life.

RICE FESTIVAL (P – 2 only)  Learn about the importance of rice in everyday life in Indonesia.  Get dressed up and be part of a Harvest Festival celebration.

VILLAGE LIFE (from grade 3)  Learn about aspects of Indonesian agriculture, land use practices utilising the sawah (rice fields).  Participate in a series of rotating activities in our Indonesian village: temple presentations, rice preparation and rice padi maintenance, pounding of grain, winnowing, and water collection.

STREET LIFE (yr 7-11)  Compare Indonesian street kids and Australian students’ daily life in this reality-based program  Learn to interact and bargain the Indonesian way and purchase small artefacts made by the street kids of – please bring gold coins to make purchases.

9389 0144 =CULTURAL = INDONESIAN PROGRAM (GRADES P-Yr11) TRADITIONAL WEAVING (Yr 7-11)  Untangle the secrets of the ancient art form of weaving using simple traditional methods from Makassar.  Make a bracelet to take home.

MARRIAGE CELEBRATION (Yr 7-11)  Dress in traditional wedding clothes and partake in a wedding ceremony from Java and South Sulawesi.  Discover the delicate art of the wedding rituals.

** Indonesian activities can be included in a multicultural day at CERES with other cultural activities included in the Aboriginal, African and Indian programs.
