The sustainable development without the environment damaging that all activities are recommended, so that between the nature and humans can be worked simultaneously. The purpose of study is maintaining the natural conditions as they are and not to be undermined by irresponsible actions. All of them are facilitated by the government, while maintaining the Osing culture community and expanding the region and make it more widely known. The maintenance of the natural existing resources should be as good as possible, so that it can be passed on future generations in well condition. All of the resources, can be redeveloped in future. The research method used qualitative-descriptive-explorative method which are sorting the datas object. The activities should have involved and relevant with the stakeholders such as the local government, the community leaders or non-governmental organizations and the broader community. The reciprocal relationships between human beings as residents and the environment are occurred as their daily life. Their life will become peaceful when the nature is domesticated. No one tends offhand to associate gamelan with MIT. but there it is. Professor Evan Ziporyn has been directing the gong kebyar ensemble Gamelan Galak Tika at MIT since 1993, and I was an active member from 1994 until 1997. Unfortunately the pressure of my studies at Wesleyan has not allowed me to play with Galak Tika as much as I would like in the past few years. For the three years of my tenure with Galak Tika we were blessed with the artistry of the Balinese husband and wife team of I Nyoman Catra and Desak Made Suarti Laksmi. The magnificent teaching and performance prowess of Evan, Catra and Desak formed the basis of my introduction to gamelan music. In 1997 I came to Wesleyan University to study for the degree of Master of Arts in Music, of which this thesis is a part. Here at Wesleyan I have had the great honor of studying with I. M. Harjito and Sumarsam, two Javanese artists. I sincerely thank them for broadening my awareness of the multifaceted natures of Indonesian music and for sharing with me the great beauty of the central Javanese court gamelan. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents five subtopics, namely; research background, research questions, research objective, research limitation and research significance. 1.1 Research Background Language is essentially a speech of the mind and feeling of human beings on a regular basis, which uses sound as a tool (Ministry of National Education, 2005: 3). Language is a structure and meaning that is free from its users, as a sign that concludes a goal (HarunRasyid, Mansyur&Suratno 2009: 126). Language is a particular kind of system that is used to transfer the information and it is an encoding and decoding activity in order to get information (Seken, 1992). The number of languages in the world varies between (6,000-7,000) languages. However, the right estimates depend on arbitrary changes between various languages and dialects. Natural language is sign language but each language can be encoded into a second medium using audio, visual, or touch stimuli, for example, in the form of graphics, braille, or whistles. This is because human language is an independent modality. All languages depend on a symbiotic process to connect signals with certain meanings. In Indonesia there are many very beautiful cities and many tribes that have different languages and are very interesting to learn. One of the cities to be studied is Banyuwangi Regency. Banyuwangi Regency is a district of East Java province in Indonesia. This district is located in the easternmost part of Java Island. Banyuwangi is separated by the Bali Strait from Bali. Banyuwangi City is the administrative capital. The name Banyuwangi is the Javanese language for "fragrant water", which is connected with Javanese folklore on the Tanjung. -

Transborder TheorIes and ParadIgms In EthnomusIcological StudIes of Folk MusIc: VIsIons for Mo Lam in Mainland Southeast Asia ThIs talk explores the nature and IdentIty of tradItIonal musIc, prIncIpally khaen musIc and lam performIng arts In northeastern ThaIland (Isan) and Laos. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants. -

Can You Shake It? The Angklung of Southeast Asia By Professor Kuo-Huang Han School of Music Northern Illinois University Angklung is a popular bamboo musical instrument in Southeast Asia. It is the easiest instrument to play: you just shake it. It is now widely used in music education. In this article, you will be informed about the background, usage, and playing methods of this instrument. A. Bamboo in Asia Bamboo is a type of plant of the grass family. There are about 75 genera and approximately 1000 species in the world. Asia, especially Southeast Asia and the Far East, has the major concentration of bamboo production. In fact, the word "bamboo" came from a Malay term, "bambu", which originally described the crackling sound of burning bamboo: "bam"! "bu"! Bamboo seems to grow everywhere in these regions. It is one of the most important materials in many Asian peoples’ daily lives. It is also a symbol of good luck and an essential part in their spiritual lives. 1. Material Culture Bamboo is strong but light and elastic. Throughout the ages, it has been used for a great variety of purposes. It is used as building material for houses, fences, bridges, irrigation pipes, bulletin boards, tables, chairs, and beds. It is also used as a carrying pole, a walking stick, chopsticks, water containers, cups, pencil holders, bow and arrows, etc. Split bamboo is used for weaving nets, hats, baskets, and umbrellas. Finally, bamboo shoots and bamboo seeds can be eaten. Bamboo pulp fibers were used to make paper. In ancient times, bamboo slips were used for carving characters. -

Democracy and Patrimonial Politics in Local Indonesia Nankyung Choi Introduction After a decade of political and administrative reform and several rounds of competitive elections, Indonesia, by most accounts, displays a democratic political system. There is little consensus on the character of the country's democracy, however. Optimists have called Indonesia one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant democracies, a claim that, upon a moment's reflection, says remarkably little. It is no coincidence that many sunny accounts of Indonesia's politics are fixated on Jakarta and national politics, providing a decidedly thin understanding of the actual state of Indonesia's political institutions. By contrast, analysts of the country's local politics, though cognizant and appreciative of the country's significant democratic gains, have presented evidence that questions the quality of the country's democratic institutions.1 These more critical accounts show that, despite the presence of elections, competitive political parties, and a relatively free press, Indonesia's politics are frequently determined by such non-democratic mechanisms as corruption, intimidation, and clientelism.
