  • Round the Llanquihue Lake
Round the Llanquihue Lake A full day spent exploring the corners of this magnificent lake. The third biggest of South America, and the second of Chile with 330sq miles. It is situated in the southern Los Lagos Region in the Llanquihue and Osorno provinces. The lake's fan-like form was created by successive piedmont glaciers during the Quaternary glaciations. The last glacial period is called Llanquihue glaciation in Chile after the terminal moraine systems around the lake. We will enjoy unique views from the Volcano Osorno introducing us to the peaceful rhythm of a laid back life. Meet your driver and guide at your hotel. Bordering the south lake Llanquihue acrros the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park visiting the resort of Ensenada and the Petrohue River Falls. The tour will continue up to the Osorno Volcano, Ski Resort, 1200 mts asl. (3937 feet asl.) where you will get spectacular views of the Mt Tronador, Volcano Puntiagudo,Llanquihue lake, and if is clear enough even the Reloncavi sound and of course the whole valley of Petrohue river. For the itchy feet we can go for a short walk to the crater rojo and back. (1hr) Or optional chair lift instead. You can bring your own lunch box and have it here or get something at the restaurant. Continuation to the northern border of Llanquihue Lake driving across some of the least visited sides of the lake where agriculture and cattle ranches take part of the local economy passing through Cascadas village. We will reach the picturesque village of Puerto Octay, located on a quiet bay enclosed by the Centinela Peninsula and then to the city of Frutillar, with its houses built in German style with lovely gardens represent the arquitecture in the mid 30/s when the first settlers arrived to begin a hard working life in the south.

Page 1/26 Abstract In order to analyze the process of subduction of the Nazca and South American plates in the area of the Southern Andes, and its relationship with the tectonic and volcanic regime of the place, magnetotelluric measurements were made through a transversal prole of the Chilean continental margin. The data processing stage included the analysis of dimensional parameters, which as rst results showed a three- dimensional environment for periods less than 1s and two-dimensional for periods greater than 10s. In addition, through the geomagnetic transfer function (tipper), the presence of structural electrical anisotropy was identied in the data. After the dimensional analysis, a deep electrical resistivity image was obtained by inverting a 2D and a 3D model.

Morgan1 & Jason Harvey1 & Miguel-Ángel Parada2,3 & Angelo Castruccio2,3 & Raimundo Brahm2,3,4 & Francisco Gutiérrez5 & Bogomil Georgiev1 & Samantha J. Hammond6 Received: 6 August 2018 /Accepted: 20 February 2019 # The Author(s) 2019 Abstract Calbuco volcano is a Late Pleistocene composite stratovolcano and member of the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Chilean Andes (41°19′S, 72°36′W). It lies ~ 20 km west of the Liquiñe–Ofqui Fault Zone, but is not located directly upon any major regional structures. During April 2015, a sub-Plinian eruption occurred, with a bulk erupted volume of ~ 0.3–0.6 km3 (~ 0.1–0.2 km3 DRE). The eruption was a rapid-onset event that produced highly crystalline products (from 40 to 60 vol.%) including the mineral phases: plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, amphibole, olivine, apatite, ilmenite, titanomagnetite and chalcopyrite. An upper-crustal reservoir is inferred using available geophysical data combined with amphibole geobarometry. Consideration of textural features, including high crystallinity, complex mineral zonation, crystal clots and interstitial glass between crystals from clots, suggests the presence of a mush zone within this reservoir. From the nine collected samples, whole-rock chemistry and an array of geothermometers (amphibole, amphibole-plagioclase, two-pyroxenes and Fe–Ti oxides) gave similar results for all samples possessing ~ 40 vol.% of crystals, with the exception of the sample Cal-160 (~ 60 vol.% crystallinity), which is slightly more evolved and yields lower temperatures for all geothermometers.

  • 20Ing.Volcan Calbuco Hike
Volcan Calbuco Hike Calbuco volcano, along with its neighbor Osorno, is one of Chile's most active volcanoes. It is located 11 km south of Lake Llanquihué and 30 km NE of the town of Puerto Mont in the Lake District in southern Chile. Calbuco volcano consists mainly of blocky lava flows and tephra layers, and its summit is truncated by a 400-500 m wide summit crater. Debris avalanches from Calbuco have reached Lake Llanquihue. One of the largest historical eruptions in southern Chile took place from Calbuco in 1893-1894. It ended with the formation of a lava dome in the summit crater. Later eruptions have enlarged the lava-dome complex. This volcano erupted last 22nd April 2015 making it difficult to reach the mountain hut and base for the Summit. Calbuco Volcano is the third most active Volcano in the Region after Villarica and Llaima with 203 metres above sea level. In November 2018 CONAf has reopened the trails to the abandonded base camp to summit it. The trails remained clear and they are being kept by the park ranges. They are clear and safe with a professional trekking guide. A Full day trekking excursion to this special volcano, because its live scenery going on along the Rio Blanco river. Luckily the ancient forest with 3.000 years old trees, the Alerce (fitzroya cupressoides ) are still green, alive and healthy as well as other giant trees like coigues ( nothofagus family). We will pick you up at your hotel in Puerto Varas or Puerto Montt, drive to Puerto Montt and take the road southwards enjoying the views of the Reloncaví sound and its amazing colors! • A Thesis Submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Geography
HAZARDOUS GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES IN THE EXTRATROPICAL ANDES WITH A FOCUS ON GLACIAL LAKE OUTBURST FLOODS By Pablo Iribarren Anacona A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Geography Victoria University of Wellington 2016 i Abstract This study examines hazardous processes and events originating from glacier and permafrost areas in the extratropical Andes (Andes of Chile and Argentina) in order to document their frequency, magnitude, dynamics and their geomorphic and societal impacts. Ice-avalanches and rock-falls from permafrost areas, lahars from ice-capped volcanoes and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have occurred in the extratropical Andes causing ~200 human deaths in the Twentieth Century. However, data about these events is scarce and has not been studied systematically. Thus, a better knowledge of glacier and permafrost hazards in the extratropical Andes is required to better prepare for threats emerging from a rapidly evolving cryosphere. I carried out a regional-scale review of hazardous processes and events originating in glacier and permafrost areas in the extratropical Andes. This review, developed by means of a bibliographic analysis and the interpretation of satellite images, shows that multi-phase mass movements involving glaciers and permafrost and lahars have caused damage to communities in the extratropical Andes. However, it is noted that GLOFs are one the most common and far reaching hazards and that GLOFs in this region include some of the most voluminous GLOFs in historical time on Earth. Furthermore, GLOF hazard is likely to increase in the future in response to glacier retreat and lake development.
