(Accommodations, Pucón) PUCÓN: Excursion to Huerquehue National Park Spend the day exploring the trails in this national park located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, only a few miles from the town of Pucón. The park has many trails through the forests of monkey-puzzle trees, several waterfalls, and 20 lakes and lagoons. Among the local wildlife are Darwin's Frog, the Andean Fox and the Andean Condor. (Breakfast, Box Lunch & Accommodations, Pucón) PUCÓN TO HUILO HUILO: This morning you have a private transfer for the 2½-hour drive to the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, which lies in the middle of the Patagonian Rainforest. Arrive at the Hotel Nothofagus inside the reserve. Spend the rest of the day at leisure at Nothofagus, built in the shape of giant tree and nestled in the forest. Consider utilizing the spa facilities at the hotel, including a pool and sauna. (Breakfast, Pucón; Dinner & Accommodations, Huilo Huilo) HUILO HUILO: Spend the day exploring the options available to you at the hotel, from self-guided trails, to mountain biking, to the longest zip line in South America. Horseback riding and bird watching are also available. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner & Accommodations, Huilo Huilo) HUILO HUILO TO PUERTO VARAS: After breakfast, a private transfer lasting about 4 hours takes you through the forested landscape to Puerto Varas, on the shore of Llanquihue Lake. Arrive at Cabaña del Lago Hotel in the late afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Enjoy the large indoor pool at the hotel, offering spectacular views of the lake and the distant volcanoes. (Breakfast, Huilo Huilo; Accommodations, Puerto Varas) PUERTO VARAS: Osorno and Petrohue Falls Tour Today you will have a six-hour excursion to see some of the most beautiful sights in Chile. Start by visiting the shore of Llanquihue Lake for a stunning view of Osorno and Calibuco Volcanoes. Then you will ascend to the Osorno Ski Mountain Center, at an elevation of 4,000 feet, for breathtaking views of the volcanoes, the lake and the distant Pacific Ocean. You'll have lunch at the ski center before departing to Vincente Perez Rosales National Park on the shore of Todos Los Santos Lake. Here you can take a stroll on the lakeshore, surrounded by an evergreen forest. Then visit the Petrohué River Rapids, where the river passes over large smooth lava boulders. Continue on to the lakeshore to board a boat for a 40-minute ride on Todos Los Santos Lake [optional, paid locally], with views of evergreen forests and volcanoes—a spectacular setting. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. It is situated in the southern Los Lagos Region in the Llanquihue and Osorno provinces. The lake's fan-like form was created by successive piedmont glaciers during the Quaternary glaciations. The last glacial period is called Llanquihue glaciation in Chile after the terminal moraine systems around the lake. We depart early in mornig from Puerto Varas to Petrohué on the shores of Todos Los Santos Lake. On our way to the lake, we’ll pass through areas that are the mouths of the rivers which flow from the sides of Osorno Volcano. On warm days, it is possible to see what appear to be dust clouds arising from the flanks of the volcano. In reality, these are ash clouds raised by the flowing waters making their way down the flanks of the volcano. We will cross vast areas of black ash mixed with the lashes from the Calbuco eruption in 2015 and have been brought down by the glacial melt. You will appreciate the might of the volcano as you see the results of the ash flows experienced during its eruptions. One can only imagine what it must have been like during its periods of activity. Leaving Petrohué, we head upward toward the base of Volcano Osorno (8,730 feet). Our trek takes us through Osorno’s volcanic canyons where amazing rock formations are etched out of the canyon walls by the melting snows and glaciers of Osorno. As we head upwards to Desolation Pass, at an altitude of 5,610 feet between the Osorno and Cerro La Picada volcanoes, we will also see a wide variety of lava formations created by the lava flows that built Osorno.
