Department of Environmental Studies Lewis & Clark College Portland, Oregon May 2016 DEDICATION To Ella Bump 1 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would fist like to extend my greatest appreciation to those who made time to speak with me in Chile, despite my less than impressive Spanish. This thesis would not have been possible without the insights of both the interviewees who are cited here, and the many other conversations that filled my travels. Special thanks to Thomas, Anthony, Gabriel, Adele, Coto, Matias, Raketa, and Rocio for their hospitality and kindness. I would also like to thank the SAAB Research Grant Board and the Renewable Energy Fee Fund Committee for the finances to both conduct and translate my research. Specifically, Julie Jacobs’ and Marlon Jimenez Oviendo’s guidance was instrumental in the grant processes. I would also like to acknowledge Jim Proctor and the Environmental Studies 2016 senior class for their intellectual support and constant inspiration. Jhana Taylor Valentine was the most wonderful academic companion and friend throughout this year, to whom I owe my sanity. Special thanks to Alistair Bleifuss for wading through a very rough draft and coming through with excellent advice. For their unwavering love and support, I would finally like to extend my constant gratitude to my comrades and housemates, Bear, Izzy, Analise, and Alex, and to my magnificent parents. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis centers on hydropower development and questions its continuing expansion as subsequent ecological and social challenges compound.

Trekking Desolacion trail. Volcán Osorno, Petrohué falls,Emerald Lake. Trekking : Vicente Perez Rosales N.Park. Desolation Pass. Overview: Profile: Adventurous Difficulty level: medium. Season: November to late March Other trips you might find interesting: Solitario Hike Parque Nacional V, Perez Rosales. Cochamo Walls and river Hike, Tagua Tagua Hike. We depart early in mornig from Puerto Varas to Petrohué on the shores of Todos Los Santos Lake. On our way to the lake, we’ll pass through areas that are the mouths of the rivers which flow from the sides of Osorno Volcano. On warm days, it is possible to see what appear to be dust clouds arising from the flanks of the volcano. In reality, these are ash clouds raised by the flowing waters making their way down the flanks of the volcano. We will cross vast areas of black ash mixed with the lashes from the Calbuco eruption in 2015 and have been brought down by the glacial melt. You will appreciate the might of the volcano as you see the results of the ash flows experienced during its eruptions. One can only imagine what it must have been like during its periods of activity. Leaving Petrohué, we head upward toward the base of Volcano Osorno (8,730 feet). Our trek takes us through Osorno’s volcanic canyons where amazing rock formations are etched out of the canyon walls by the melting snows and glaciers of Osorno. As we head upwards to Desolation Pass, at an altitude of 5,610 feet between the Osorno and Cerro La Picada volcanoes, we will also see a wide variety of lava formations created by the lava flows that built Osorno.

  • Hydrological Droughts in the Southern Andes (40–45°S)
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Hydrological droughts in the southern Andes (40–45°S) from an ensemble experiment using CMIP5 and CMIP6 models Rodrigo Aguayo1, Jorge León‑Muñoz2,3*, René Garreaud4,5 & Aldo Montecinos6,7 The decrease in freshwater input to the coastal system of the Southern Andes (40–45°S) during the last decades has altered the physicochemical characteristics of the coastal water column, causing signifcant environmental, social and economic consequences. Considering these impacts, the objectives were to analyze historical severe droughts and their climate drivers, and to evaluate the hydrological impacts of climate change in the intermediate future (2040–2070). Hydrological modelling was performed in the Puelo River basin (41°S) using the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model. The hydrological response and its uncertainty were compared using diferent combinations of CMIP projects (n = 2), climate models (n = 5), scenarios (n = 3) and univariate statistical downscaling methods (n = 3). The 90 scenarios projected increases in the duration, hydrological defcit and frequency of severe droughts of varying duration (1 to 6 months). The three downscaling methodologies converged to similar results, with no signifcant diferences between them. In contrast, the hydroclimatic projections obtained with the CMIP6 and CMIP5 models found signifcant climatic (greater trends in summer and autumn) and hydrological (longer droughts) diferences. It is recommended that future climate impact assessments adapt the new simulations as more CMIP6 models become available. Anthropogenic climate change has increased the probability of extreme events in the mid-latitudes of the South- ern Hemisphere, mainly those linked to severe droughts 1. Projections indicate that these drought events may increase in extent, frequency and magnitude as they superimpose on the gradual decrease in precipitation2,3 and a signifcant increase in heat waves 4.

  • Phylogeography and Molecular Species Delimitation Reveal Cryptic Diversity in Potamolithus (Caenogastropoda: Tateidae) of the Southwest Basin of the Andes Gonzalo A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Phylogeography and molecular species delimitation reveal cryptic diversity in Potamolithus (Caenogastropoda: Tateidae) of the southwest basin of the Andes Gonzalo A. Collado1,2, Cristian Torres‑Díaz1,2 & Moisés A. Valladares1,2* The species of the genus Potamolithus inhabiting the southwestern basin of the Andes are difcult to distinguish due to small size and similar shell morphology. Only Potamolithus australis and Potamolithus santiagensis have been traditionally recognized in this region, but the occurrence of several morphologically similar undescribed populations could increase the regional richness. Here we delimit described and potentially undescribed cryptic species of the genus using partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Network analysis and diversity indices inferred six highly diferentiated haplogroups, many of them sympatric and widespread in the study area. Phylogeographic analyses suggest a scenario of recent diversifcation and the occurrence of multiple refuges during the successive Pleistocene glaciations. Phylogenetic analysis also recovered six major clades that showed no relationship with physiography. Species delimitation analyses consistently recognized three or four candidate species apart from P. australis and P. santiagensis. Divergence times indicate that speciation of Chilean Potamolithus began at the end of the Pliocene, probably driven by climatic rather than geographic events. Considering the high inter‑ and intra‑basin genetic

Silva3, Nike Ponce1 & Patricio Campos1 1Instituto de Acuicultura, Universidad Austral de Chile, Puerto Montt, Chile 2University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland 3Universidad San Sebastián, Puerto Montt, Chile Corresponding author: Sandra Bravo ([email protected]) ABSTRACT. The Puelo and Petrohué rivers were surveyed between April 2016 and February 2017 to assess the presence and seasonal abundance of Didymosphenia geminata in the wild aquatic systems of these two important rivers in southern Chile. Didymo was reported in the Puelo River in 2012, while it was declared absent from the Petrohué River before this study commenced in the fall of 2016. Results showed that cells of D. geminata were recorded in both rivers, in the Phytobenthos as well as in the water column. However, the classical mucilage which characterizes this plague was only recorded in one of the sampled rivers (Puelo). The mucilage was not recorded in any of the sections sampled in the Petrohué River, which was attributed to the high concentration of phosphorous present in the system. The concentration of phosphorous recorded throughout the study in the Puelo River was low. However, differences in the recorded presence or absence of D. geminata between sampling sites on the Petrohué River was mainly attributable to the availability of incident sunlight. This study records for the first time the presence of D.
