Each week, on average DIBP officers: • Clear 626,000 air passengers on 3,667 flights • Process 44,000 passengers and crew arriving by sea • Grant: – 94,000 permanent and temporary visas – 5,600 student visas – 260 humanitarian visas • Confer Australian Citizenship on 3,100 people • Inspect 1M mail items • Survey 3M square nautical miles (icw Department of Defence) • Collect $264M in revenue. Department of Immigration and Border Protection FOR OFFICAL USE ONLY 12 Verification (1:1 matching) • A pilot project for the verification of passenger identity using biometrics commenced in Perth in March 2012. • Extended to Melbourne in June 2012. • The most recent facial image – collected at visa application is displayed on the device. • Verifications are conducted prior to immigration clearance using a mobile hand-held device. • To date over 11,000 biometric checks prior to immigration clearance. Department of Immigration and Border Protection FOR OFFICAL USE ONLY 13 Airport Biometric Capture Units • Passengers being turned around and passengers of interest can be enrolled as part of a secondary line interview. • Designed and assembled in-house by Immigration officers. • Deployed to all eight major Australian International Airports. • Fingerprints can be checked against immigration and law enforcement data holdings.
