Homan 2018 Abstract In this dissertation, I seek to begin building a new line of health inequality research that parallels the emerging structural racism literature by developing theory and measurement for the new concept of structural sexism and examining its relationship to health. Consistent with contemporary theories of gender as a multilevel social system, I conceptualize and measure structural sexism as systematic gender inequality in power and resources at the macro-level (U.S. state), meso-level (marital dyad), and micro-level (individual). Through a series of quantitative analyses, I examine how various measures of structural sexism affect the health of men, women, and infants in the U.S. -

"A Common Fate of Discrimination": Race-Gender Analogies in Legal and Historical Perspective Serena Mayeri In her classic work Ain't I a Woman, African-American feminist critic bell hooks excoriated white feminists for their "constant comparison[s] of the plight of 'women' and 'blacks,"'' charging that such analogies "support the exclusion of black women" 2 and represent the linguistic expression of a ' "sexist-racist attitude" endemic to the women's liberation movement. Hooks, writing in the early 1980s, perceived analogies between racial and sexual oppression-at least as articulated by white women who "used black people as metaphors" 4-as a quintessentially opportunistic, parasitic, and marginalizing practice. Two decades earlier, when civil rights attorney Pauli Murray, already a veteran of battles against racial and sexual exclusion, was searching for a means of persuading skeptics that the eradication of "Jane Crow" deserved moral commitment and legal mobilization equivalent to the fight against "Jim Crow," she had emphasized the "strikingly similar positions in American society" of "women and Negroes." 5 Invoking the "parallel and interrelated" histories of women's rights and civil rights movements, Murray articulated an analogy that superficially resembled the very comparison hooks would later condemn. Powerful political and legal imperatives shaped Murray's decision to invoke an analogy between race and sex in the early 1960s. In so doing, she deliberately and self-consciously adopted a long tradition within feminist advocacy traceable to the genesis of the antebellum woman's rights struggle I. Sara M. EvanS Women’s Liberation: Seeing the Revolution Clearly Approximately fifty members of the five Chicago radical women’s groups met on Saturday, May 18, 1968, to hold a citywide conference. The main purposes of the conference were to create and strengthen ties among groups and individuals, to generate a heightened sense of common history and purpose, and to provoke imaginative pro- grammatic ideas and plans. In other words, the conference was an early step in the process of movement building. —Voice of Women’s Liberation Movement, June 19681 EvEry account of thE rE-EmErgEncE of feminism in the United States in the late twentieth century notes the ferment that took place in 1967 and 1968. The five groups meeting in Chicago in May 1968 had, for instance, flowered from what had been a single Chicago group just a year before. By the time of the conference in 1968, activists who used the term “women’s liberation” understood themselves to be building a movement. Embedded in national networks of student, civil rights, and antiwar movements, these activists were aware that sister women’s liber- ation groups were rapidly forming across the country. However, this article may suggest otherwise If you’ve ever wondered why nearly all the people you read about who are joining the Islamic State or neo-Nazi groups or the white-nationalist alt-right are men, Kimmel contends it’s no coincidence: He believes that gender, specifically masculinity, is both “the psychological inspiration” that sends young men into these groups “and the social glue that keeps them involved.” The author of this article states gender, and masculinity not certain parts of masculinity, is responsible for driving men to commit acts of terrorism. For Kimmel, a sociologist at Stony Brook University in New York, a deep dive into the complexities of manhood is familiar territory. He’s the author of two other books that cover similar ground: “Angry White Men,” which focuses on wife-beaters and rageaholics and what motivates them, and “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men,” which looks at the male transition from adolescence to adulthood. Dillinger shared stories of his participation in the anti-war movement beginning in the Vietnam era and described the faith-based resistance community that he and his wife had lived in. Of all of this, what meant the most to me was his closing comment; “Looking back I wonder: Why, when we were so committed to addressing injustice, did we not address our own sexism? The women of the community still did most of the domestic work and the men most of the activism.” I was 27 at the time and involved in social change work on several fronts, yet it had never occurred to me that addressing sexism might be as important as addressing such things as poverty, racism, militarism and the exploitation of the earth. -

INTRODUCTION Male domination of the female body is the basic material reality of women’s lives; and all struggle for dignity and self-determination is rooted in the struggle for actual control of one’s own body . .1 The very word erotic comes from the Greek word eros, the personification of love in all its aspects─born of Chaos, and personifying creative power and harmony. When I speak of the erotic, then, I speak of it as an assertion of the lifeforce of women; of that creativity energy empowered, the knowledge and use of which we are now reclaiming in our language, our history, our dancing, our loving, our work, our lives.2 Aristophanes’ play, Lysistrata, tells of a group of women who withhold sex from their husbands until their husbands make peace with the Spartans.3 This simple story creates a powerful image of these women’s awareness of their bodies’ inherent power. This awareness, arguably, pushes them to present the body as a tool capable of triggering change. While this may, at first glance, seem a story of manipulation, it is actually a celebration of the power and redemptive qualities of women’s bodies. The female body has long been the subject of awe, shame, and controversy. Women who have expressed themselves through their bodies have traditionally been typecast as loose and oversexed by both men and women alike. -

Cook, MS Submitted to the Department of Applied Psychology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the field of Counseling Psychology Northeastern University March 2020 Dissertation Committee: Tracy Robinson-Wood, Ed.D, Chair William Sanchez, Ph.D Janie Ward, Ed.D INTERNALIZED MISOGYNOIR MEASURE 2 ABSTRACT Rooted in Williams Crenshaw’s (1993) theory of intersectionality, misogynoir is gendered racism that is specific to Black women, and illustrates the ways that Black women experience violence and hostility through the perpetuation of anti-Black, racist misogyny. Internalized Misogynoir is an intersectional form of internalized oppression which stems from the integration of internalized racism, internalized sexism and internalized misogyny. The goal of this study is to extend Williams Crenshaw’s work to operationally define “misogynoir,” through the construction of an internalized misogynoir measure. The methodology for this study consisted of focus groups to obtain Black women’s opinions on misogynoir, as well as a proposed measure and the use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explicate meaning from focus group data.
