'. the ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT Has Organised Today's March ~MiJtIl~ ~ LIEEO /UUIIV M I- ~MiJtIl~ ~ LIEEO /UUIIV M Iil I * "'. The ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT has organised today's March and Festival for Freedom at a time when the crisis in Southern Africa has never been more acute. Whilst Mrs Thatcher refuses to take any meaningful action against the Botha regime, thousands of opponents of apartheid are being detained, and blanket censorship shrouds with secrecy the conflict within South Africa and Namibia. Never before, in all their long history of struggle, have the people of Southern Africa needed so much the commitment and solidarity of people in Britain. You've joined in the March for Freedom today, but don't leave it at that. JOIN THE CAMPAIGN FOR FREEDOM IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, SUPPORT THE SANCTIONS CAMPAIGN AND JOIN THE ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT TODAY. In Clapham Common they should be taken to the Children's Area (see map). The Children's Area at Clapham Common will be open from 2.00pm onwards, and will have experienced staff. The AAM cannot however accept responsibility for children left unattended in this area. Legal Support The Organisers hope that the day will be a peaceful demonstration of solidarity with the liberation struggle and of opposition to British policies of collaboration with Pretoria. In the event of any arrests in relation to the event, a Legal Support Team has been set up. If you are arrested, or witness an arrest, contact 388 2925. The lines will be open until 9.30pm. If you witness an arrest, make a note of the number of the arresting officer, the name and address (or if unknown a description) of the person arrested, and give this, with your name and address, to one of the stewards. The information will be relayed to the Legal Support team. There will be NCCL observers on the March and at the Festival. Facilities for Disabled People There will be transport from Hyde Park to Clapham Common only for disabled people (and also for the elderly and people with small children). If you wish to use this facility you are requested to inform the Information Desk near the stage at Hyde Park. There are toilet facilities for disabled people at Clapham Common (marked DT on map). First Aid First Aid will be provided by the St John Ambulance Brigade at both Hyde Park and Clapham Common. (See map). If you see someone in need of medical care please inform a Steward immediately. Getting Away from Clapham Common The transport facilities from Clapham are far from ideal for the numbers likely to attend the Festival. London Regional Transport has arranged additional underground services and a special bus service. However it may take some time to get away at the end of the Festival. If you wish to avoid long queues you are strongly advised to leave early. TUBES: Clapham Common Underground is marked on the map. Clapham South Underground will be closed from 8.00pm. BUSES: A special shuttle service from Long Road (see map) to Vauxhall Underground has been arranged. The fare will be 50p (no travelcards) FEET!: Clapham Junction BR, Stockwell and Balham Underground Stations are within walking distance. COACH: Coaches for those travelling away from London will be parked at Vauxhall Foot coach park (beside Vauxhall tube). Any overflow will be accommodated on the nearby Nine Elms Lane. For more detailed information on transport see the "Going Home" leaflet available at the Information Desk. Information An Information Desk is to be found in the AAM Marquee. If you need any help or have any questions about the day's events not covered in this leaflet, please go there. The Marquees, Toilets, First Aid Stations and Children's Area are marked on the map. The costs of staging today's March and Festival for Freedom are immense! The Anti-Apartheid Movement badly needs funds to cover these costs, and to continue its vital work of helping to put an end to the evil of apartheid. There will be AAM Collectors circulating during the day, and the main collection will be at 6.00pm. Please give as generously as you can! Those collecting for the AAM will be clearly identified. Lost Property Please take extra special care of all your personal belongings as the AAM cannot be responsible for any losses. Please report any losses including suspected theft to the Information Stall at Clapham Common. Printed by East End Offset (TU all depts), Unit 7, Empson St, London E3 3LT THE ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT For Freedom in Southern Africa The Anti-Apartheid Movement has been mobilising for over a quarter of a century in solidarity wth those struggling for freedom in Southern Africa. It campaigns: * for full-scale sanctions against South Africa * for People's Sanctions through a range of boycott actions * for the release of Nelson Mandela and all political prisoners in Namibia and South Africa * for solidarity with the liberation movements in Namibia and South Africa The Anti-Apartheid Movement is a campaigning organisation with some 30,000 individual and national members and over 140 local groups in most large towns and cities throughout Britain, plus about 150 student groups. A Scottish Committee of the AAM co-ordinates activity in Scotland, whilst activity in Wales is organised by Welsh AAM. As the struggle for freedom intensifies, so too does the need for effective support in Britain. The apartheid regime is becoming increasingly brutal in its repression, yet the British Government refuses to take meaningful action against apartheid. This means we need more support and more action to change British policy from support for Botha to support for the liberation struggle. In a special message to this Festival Bishop Tutu said: "Our children are dying; our land is burning and bleeding. I call on you, the people of Britain, in God's name to appeal to your government to apply sanctions against the evil system of apartheid ..... I want to thank the Anti-Apartheid Movement for keeping alive the fight against apartheid, and appeal to all ofyou to redouble your efforts in solidarity with our people." Twice in the past month Britain has used its veto in the United Nations to protect South Africa from sanctions. We cannot let this happen again. If you believe in the cause of freedom and justice then you should join the Anti-Apartheid Movement today. The AAM wishes to thank all the hundreds of volunteers without whom this event could not take place, Artists Against Apartheid who arranged the performances, but above all the people of South Africa and Namibia whose struggle for freedom and justice are an inspiration to us all. • Chapter 5: Parks and Open Spaces
Draft CHAPTER 5 Parks and Open Spaces Before it became intensively developed for housing, the parish of Battersea was mostly open agricultural land governed by differing types of tenure (Ill. 5.1). Perhaps a third of it was in some form of common tenure. It was from these areas that the larger public open spaces described in this chapter— Battersea Park, Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common—have come down in the guise familiar today. The two commons, as their names imply, occupied common land, governed by laws defining the rights of the lords of the manor and copyholders or commoners. Mainly they provided rough grazing and were exploited for brushwood and gravel. In addition there was the large expanse known as Battersea Common Field or Fields, located on more fertile ground closer to the river and subject to flooding. This was not full common land in the same sense as the two commons. It was owned freehold by the lord of the manor, leased or tenanted largely in strips, and intensively cultivated for arable farming or market gardening. ‘Lammas rights’ of turning out livestock over the fields for certain weeks of the year were held by local parishioners, while entertainment venues had become an established feature of its riverside sector by 1800. It was here that Battersea Park was created. The perceived public interest in both types of tenure led eventually to the emergence of Battersea’s three great open spaces. But they evolved in different ways. Battersea Park came into being by a series of accidents. After endeavouring to enclose Battersea Fields and failing, the Spencers as lords of Survey of London © English Heritage 2013 1 Draft the manor decided in the 1830s to sell the area in lots.
