SURVEY OF PAKISTAN 1. OVERVIEW. a. Introduction: Survey of Pakistan is a National Surveying and Mapping Agency and an attached department of Ministry of Defence with its headquarters at Rawalpindi and sub-offices (Circle Field Directorates) in all four provincial capitals. It emerged from Survey of India at the time of independence. b. Mission: To delineate and demarcate International borders, carry out topographic survey, prepare national geographical data base and publish maps of Pakistan. c. Role / Functions/Responsibilities: i. To delineate International borders and demarcate & relocate border pillars. ii. To carry out topographic survey, updation and printing of topographic sheets of National Map series on scale 1:50,000. iii. To provide geodetic control, heights and geographical positions all over Pakistan. iv. To compile derived maps on scale 1:250,000, 1:500,000, 1:1,000,000, 1:2,000,000, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) charts on scale 1:1,000,000. v. To generate maps on any scale through aerial photography and remote sensing through analytical and digital methods. vi. To Develop Geographic Information System (GIS) for Govt., Semi Govt. departments/organizations/private sector according to their requirements on payment. vii. To survey & prepare cantonment areas maps. viii. To prepare and print Guide maps, District maps, Road maps & Tehsil maps for the entire country. ix. To train departmental employees and potential candidates from private sector in various disciplines of surveying and mapping in the Survey Training Institute at certificate and diploma levels. d. Organization: The department is headed by Surveyor General of Pakistan assisted by two Deputy Surveyor Generals. Training Facility: a. Survey Training Institute was established in 1986 and is affiliated with Punjab Board of Technical Education, Lahore. Not only Survey Training Institute is imparting training to SoP employees in the discipline of Surveying & Mapping using technical state of art techniques, softwares, equipment Global Positioning System (GPS, Total Station, Remote Sensing, Arc GIS), but Survey Training Institute also playing its national role to train the private candidates in order to look up employment inland and abroad with provisions of following professional courses. Diploma, Certificate & Short Courses using: a. Total Station b. GPS c. GIS d. Levelling Techniques e. Mapping Techniques 1. ACHIEVEMENTS / PROJECTS. i. SoP has completed digital mapping of the entire country on following scales using latest surveying and mapping techniques:- a. 1:50,000 b. 1:250,000 c. 1:500,000 d. 1:1,000,000 e. Guide Maps, Province Maps, District Maps, Tehsil Maps, Town Maps and Thematic Maps on various scales. 178 ii. Geodetic control network through GPS Network spread all over Pakistan has been provided and is being expanded every year, iii. SoP has accomplished various projects of national importance as Paid for Job Projects for Govt./ Semi Govt. / Private Sector Organizations / Firms. Some of them are narrated hereunder: Sl. Updation of maps on scale 1:50,000 using Satellite Imagery of 1M Resolution and field verification. ii. Updation of Atlas of Pakistan. iii. Updation of District Maps. iv. Densifying the A&B Order Geodetic Network is under progress. A&B order Geodetic Network duly prepared by GPS (Single & Dual frequency) is essentially required for reliable and accurate mapping on all scales. 179 1. FUTURE PLANS. i. National Map Policy-2010: A National Map Policy for preparation, management and dissemination of spatial data has always been considered an immediate requirement. The policy is at final stage of approval by Govt. of Pakistan. ii. National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI): In addition to departmental data base, a National level facility with ease of access for objective and efficient decision making is also essential and being established world over. To avoid duplication of efforts on data development by different national organizations and integrate the information from different sources, National Spatial Data Infrastructures (NSDI) is the dire need of the day. The case identifying the resources required as well as the stakeholders has been forwarded to Govt. of Pakistan for approval. 180 .
