OCTOBER 26, 2017 the Source OCTOBER 26, 2017 The Source The citrus dry spell is coming to an end. All those oranges that were just orange with no fl avor are a thing of the past. We can now enjoy citrus for its bright perfumes and balanced tart tastes. With this upturn in citrus comes one of the oddest fruits—The Buddha’s Hand. This citron looks like a lemon with yellow fi ngers growing out one end. It makes for a gorgeous display piece often gaining all the attention because of its unusual shape. There is little to no pulp or juice from the fruit. So…how is it used? This question has stumped most everyone I have asked. One thing I know is that it is very fragrant. This can be highlighted with candying the fruit. Don’t worry about the pith—it is not as bitter as other citrus. Cut the fruit up and steep in simple syrup until it is fully cooked. From there it can be used in baked goods, sauces for game, or added to vinaigrettes. I have heard of it being shaved thinly and added to hearty salads. This to me sounds like a great way to get that great fragrance and bright fl avor to shine. Interested in getting a handful of Buddha’s Hand? The item number for a 12 lb case is 24992. (Editor’s note: Twisting the fi ngers releases its aromatic oil, just as effective and 100 times nicer than Febreze. You don’t always have to eat produce to enjoy it!) • Old Relationships Bring New Apple Varieties to Oppenheimer
    - Advertisement - Old relationships bring new apple varieties to Oppenheimer May 22, 2012 The Oppenheimer Group has been synonymous with New Zealand apples and pears for over 60 years. But 2012 will have more flavor than ever, thanks to new partnerships with old friends. ENZA, the owner of premium varieties Jazz and Envy apples, will continue to play a pivotal role in Oppenheimer’s approach of supplying leading varieties to the North American market year round, while fruit from other growers will complement this partnership, according to John 1 / 2 Anderson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Vancouver, BC-based Oppenheimer. “This spring we will see several varieties unique to the Heartland Group of Nelson, New Zealand, added to the portfolio of new tastes that Oppenheimer offers,” Mr. Anderson said in a May 9 press release. Cutting-edge varieties Divine, Smitten, Tentation and Eve are among the newcomers. “Together with ENZA Jazz and Envy apples, we are in a position to offer retailers the opportunity to set new expectations about apples in the minds of consumers. By reserving a slot for new varieties, our customers can rotate the newest flavors from April through October, when fresh-crop Jazz, Pacific Rose and Envy return to the market.” If this line-up wasn’t enough, Oppenheimer marketed more of the remarkable new Honey Belle pear available from KiwiCrunch of New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay this year, according to David Nelley, Oppenheimer’s apple and pear category director. “In 2011, we experienced good success with trials of this diminutive, super-sweet, crunchy pear in Canada, and we have been building on that this spring in both the U.S.

Received: July 07, 2017; Published: July 21, 2017 Abstract Aims of the work were to compare quantitative and qualitative parameters of apples from organic and conventional (integrated) production in following attributes: fruit weight, fruit diameter, juice yield, total sugar content, total acid content, fructose, glucose, malic acid, total soluble solids (TSS) and pH. A statistically significant difference between fruit diameter and fruit weight in organic and conventional system was observed. In evaluation of significance in nutrition values between all 11 varieties in each parameter between the two production systems the significance was only in pH value confirmed. By all other parameters the significance was followed in second row by Morgenduft, Red Delicious and Red Chief. For conventional production Fuji and Gala were the best fol- not confirmed. • Environmental Assessment for Retrieval of Adrift NOAA Buoy 3DV21
Environmental Assessment DRAFT Environmental Assessment for Retrieval of Adrift NOAA Buoy 3DV21 Prepared by: Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument Office of National Marine Sanctuaries National Ocean Service National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration U.S. Department of Commerce [DATE] 1 Environmental Assessment 1.0 PURPOSE AND NEED Introduction The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) seeks access to Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM or Monument) to retrieve NOAA buoy 3DV21 and any associated chains, lines, or debris, which are currently grounded at Neva Shoal, at the earliest possible opportunity (through a federal contract opportunity). This action is necessary to retrieve NDBC property, stop further damage to PMNM resources, and remove any debris associated with the adrift buoy (including the buoy) from the ocean/Monument environment. This environmental assessment addresses recovery of a grounded data buoy, which includes retrieval of the buoy and transport to Honolulu. PMNM is one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. Established on June 15, 2006, the Monument was created by Presidential Proclamation 8031 under the authority of the Antiquities Act (16 U.S.C. §§ 431-433). It encompasses 139,797 square miles of the Pacific Ocean (362,073 square kilometers) - an area approximately three times of the size of the main Hawaiian island chain, extending from Hawaii island to Kauai island. The area is also designated as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area under the International Maritime Authority and is a United Nations World Heritage Site. The extensive coral reefs found in the Monument are home to over 7,000 marine species, one quarter of which are found only in the Hawaiian Archipelago.

ECE/TRADE/C/WP.7/GE.1/2009/INF.3 Specialized Section on Standardization of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Fifty-fifth session Geneva, 4 - 8 May 2009 Items 4(a) of the provisional agenda REVISION OF UNECE STANDARDS Proposals on the list of apple varieties This note has been put together by the secretariat following the decision taken by the Specialized Section at its fifty-fourth session to collect information from countries on varieties that are important in international trade. Replies have been received from the following countries: Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA. This note also includes the documents compiled for the same purpose and submitted to the fifty-second session of the Specialized Section. I. Documents submitted to the 52nd session of the Specialized Section A. UNECE Standard for Apples – List of Varieties At the last meeting the 51 st session of the Specialized Section GE.1 the delegation of the United Kingdom offered to coordinate efforts to simplify the list of apple varieties. The aim was to see what the result would be if we only include the most important varieties that are produced and traded. The list is designed to help distinguish apple varieties by colour groups, size and russeting it is not exhaustive, non-listed varieties can still be marketed. The idea should not be to list every variety grown in every country. The UK asked for views on what were considered to be the most important top thirty varieties. Eight countries sent their views, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, USA, Slovakia, Germany Finland and the Czech Republic.

Bloom wore on, and the long rows of trees that march endlessly across the hillsides and river valleys of central Washington slowly lost their blanket of blossoms. e great hope of the state’s apple industry was born, and born, and born. In this particular orchard, high above a bend in the Columbia River, the baby apples owed their place in the sun to Scott McDougall, the fourth generation of his family to grow the fruit for market near Wenatchee, a town built right where the buck and roll of the Cascade Range give way to the arid central Washington steppe that, thanks to heavy irrigation, has become the nation’s most productive apple-growing region. When he started his own company in 1976, Scott was the Son part of McDougall & Sons; nowadays, he is the McDougall, and the company is a large, vertically integrated grower- packer-shipper.
