Tom Sharpe (Londres 1928 – Llafranc 2013) Novel·lista anglès, una de les figures de referència de l'humor britànic. La seva infància va estar marcada per la solitud, amb una mare malalta i un pare autoritari rector de l'església anglicana. Després d'estudiar Història a la Universitat de Cambridge i realitzar el servei militar es va traslladar a Sud-àfrica el 1951, on ja havia viscut de petit, i on es va dedicar a l'ensenyament, a la fotografia i a realitzar treballs socials. El 1961 va escriure i va representar una obra teatral, Natal , en contra del règim de l' apartheid . Com a conseqüència d'aquest fet, Sharpe va ser empresonat, acusat de polític subversiu i comunista perillós i més tard va ser deportat per activitats contra el govern. Les seves experiències a l'Àfrica van inspirar les seves novel·les Assemblea sediciosa i Exhibició impúdica . Des del 1963 fins el 1972 va treballar com a professor d'història al Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, experiència que li va proporcionar un material excel·lent per a la seva obra més coneguda, Wilt . La sèrie de cinc novel·les protagonitzada per Wilt, amb milions d'exemplars venuts, va marcar un abans i un després en la seva carrera novel·lística. Des del 1992 fins a la seva mort va viure viscut a Llafranc, a la Costa Brava. Tot i viure a Catalunya tant de temps mai no va voler aprendre català ni castellà. Les seves obres han estat traduïdes a gran quantitat d'idiomes i d'algunes elles s'han realitzat sèries de televisió ( Fart de llop i Blott a la vista ). Wilt va ser portada al cinema per Michael Tuchner el 1989. Wilt es va estrenar al Teatro Bellas Artes de de Madrid l’any 2012. Va deixar tot el seu llegat literari a Catalunya on es crearà la Fundació Tom Sharpe. Sobre les seves obres.... Les seves novel·les es caracteritzen per un humor corrosiu, fins i tot de vegades cruel, que divideix els seus lectors entre els que el consideren molt ofensiu i els que el troben un mestre de l'humor. La seva temàtica és variada, des dels llibres inspirats en l' apartheid , fins els que critiquen el sistema educatiu ( Wilt i seqüeles), l'esnobisme de la classe alta anglesa ( Vicis ancestrals i Porterhouse Blue ), el món literari ( La gran persecució ), extremismes polítics de tot tipus, la burocràcia i l'estupidesa en general. Wilt Wilt és considerada la millor novel·la de Tom Sharpe. Ens explica la tragicòmica història d'un professor amb una vida grisa de dalt a baix. Tant professionalment, ensenyant literatura a alumnes que no senten el mínim interès per la lectura, com a la seva vida privada. Plena de situacions còmiques, personatges inversemblants i girs argumentals inesperats, la novel·la ridiculitza l'estereotip de l'educada societat britànica. Marc Faro Costa, Miquel Àngel Navajas i Anna Teixidor Colomer van endur-se el Carles Rahola en la categoria de millor projecte sobre comunicació per aquest treball, que el jurat va considerar que "visualitza unes possibilitats per donar a conèixer un personatge internacional instal·lat a les comarques gironines, un fet que també servirà per portar les nostres terres més enllà de les seves fronteres naturals".

    The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1 Luis Alberto Lázaro Lafuente University of Alcalá Satiric novels have traditionally been regarded as a minor form by many critics and scholars. Aristotle had already referred to the satirists as "the more trivial" poets who wrote about the actions of meaner~persons, in stark contrast to the "more serious-minded" epic poets who represented noble actions and the lives of noble people (1965: 35-36). This attitude has persisted throughout many centuries in the history of English literature. Even though satire enjoyed its golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially with the poetry of such distinguished writers as Dryden or Pope, satiric compositions in prose did not really achieve the same high position2• When with time the novel became a well• established genre, it was mainly naturalistic fiction and psychological stories that commonly attained a prominent status among the literary critics, whereas the comic and satiric novel, with a few exceptions, was relegated to a status of popular prose on the fringe of the canon, or even outside it. Indeed, in the twentieth century, several prestigious authors have offered a rather gloomy picture of the state of novelistic satire. Robert C. Revaluating the Academic Novel In The Wissenschaft File Malcolm Bradbury admits that while writing his first book he was utterly unaware of the fact that his work is to be categorized as a university novel. Misled by his experience as an academic teacher and by his professional life which consisted mainly of visiting libraries, collecting file cards in shoeboxes, writing articles and giving lectures, he assumed that the world outside the university, together with its plumbers, barmaids and other professions, is also engaged in academic work. Therefore, he was convinced that his first novel was, what might be called, a universal novel and surely not, as had been implied by his publisher, a university novel. 1 Elaine Showalter defines this genre as Professorroman , using a term coined by Richard G. Caram. She also claims that for most critics such novels 1 Malcolm Bradbury, “The Wissenschaft File,” in Liar’s Landscape: Collected Writing from a Storyteller’s Life , ed.     A Very Peculiar Practice and campus comedy: 35 years on G Neil Martin Regent’s University London !1 Abstract On May 21st 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of Andrew Davies’s campus black comedy A Very Peculiar Practice. 2021 celebrates the series’ 35th anniversary. This article considers the contribution of the series to the genre of campus comedy (and “campus novel”). It considers and evaluates the themes, plots and characters introduced throughout the series and how these re- flected, and reacted to, the political backdrop and ideology of the time. Its contribution to the tradi- tion of university satire is discussed in the broader context of the campus novel, that comedy of manners in which the University, its staff, its students and its operation are satirised. !2 On May 21st, 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of a black comedy that was to mark a milestone in BBC drama comedy and launched the television career of one of the UK’s most prodigious adaptors of novel fiction for television and film. A Very Peculiar Practice, written by An- drew Davies, ran for two series and a special, and was a very peculiar drama in many ways but in at least two: (i) it was born of some degree of creative desperation by the author and was, there- fore, almost a serendipitous creation, and (ii) it revivified a genre of comedy (and drama) which had been dormant since at least, arguably, 1981, when the BBC (again) broadcast the television adaptation of Malcolm Bradbury’s novel, The History Man.
