Aber wenn es nach dem neuen Rektor Sir Godber geht, wird die Zukunft anders aussehen: Porterhouse soll wieder ein Hort der Bildung werden, in der Küche ist Sparkurs angesagt – und es werden erstmals Studentinnen am College aufgenommen. All die daraus resultierenden Turbulenzen können Sir Godbers Position nicht gefähr- den. Erst die geplante Entlassung des Oberpförtners Skullion wird zum Problem. An Skullion ist nämlich noch keiner vorbeigekommen … Klex in der Landschaft Sir Giles, ein Politiker mit dem nötigen Schuß Opportunismus und großer Emp- fänglichkeit für kleine Geldgeschenke, plant eine Autobahn mitten durch die schönste englische Landschaft. Niemand, nicht einmal der Prälek- tor, der so alt war, daß ihm noch das Festmahl des Jahrganges 09 im Gedächtnis haftete, konnte sich an Vergleichbares erinnern – und dabei ist Porterhouse für sein Essen berühmt. Man reichte Kaviar und Soupe à l’Oignon, Turbot au Champagne, mit Pfeifenente ge- füllten Schwan und schließlich, in Gedenken an den Gründer, Beefsteak von einem im großen Kamin des College-Speisesaals ge- bratenen ganzen Ochsen. Zu jedem Gang gab es eine andere Wein- sorte, und zu jedem Gedeck gehörten fünf Gläser. Es gab Pouilly Fumé zum Fisch, Champagner zum Geflügel und den edelsten Bur- gunder aus dem collegeeigenen Weinkeller zum Beef. Zwei Stunden lang wurden die silbernen Platten aufgetragen, angekündigt durch das Schwirren der Flügeltüren in den Zwischenwänden, wenn die Kellner hin und her huschten, von ihrem Gefühl für den besonde- ren Anlaß und der Last der Speisen gebeugt. Zwei Stunden lang waren die Mitglieder von Porterhouse College von der Welt abge- schnitten, versunken in ein uraltes Ritual, das die Jahrhunderte überdauert hatte. Unter dem Geklapper der Messer und Gabeln, dem Klirren der Gläser, dem Rascheln der Servietten und den schlurfenden Schritten der College-Bediensteten verblaßte die Gegenwart. Draußen fegte der Winterwind durch die Straßen von Cambridge. Drinnen herrschte eitel Wärme und Geborgen- heit. Auf den Tischen warfen Hunderte in silbernen Leuchtern steckende Kerzen die länglichen Schatten gebückter Kellner auf die Porträts ehemaliger Rektoren, welche die Wände schmückten. Ob ernst oder leutselig, Gelehrte oder Politiker, den Porträtierten war eines gemeinsam: Sie sahen allesamt rosig und feist aus. Der Ruf der Küche von Porterhouse war uralt. Nur der neue Rektor unter- 7 schied sich von seinen Vorgängern. Sir Godber Evans saß am High Table, dem erhöhten Ehrentisch für die Fellows des Colleges, und das mäkelige Zögern, mit dem er an seinem Schwan knabberte, wich deutlich vom unverhohlenen Genuß der anderen Fellows ab. Ein starres mürrisches Lächeln brachte etwas verbissene Bewegung in Sir Godbers blasses Gesicht, als erhole sich sein Geist bei einem abwegigen und rein intellektuellen Scherz von den gegenwärtigen fleischlichen Beschwerden. »Ein Abend, den man nicht so leicht vergißt, Rektor«, sagte der Obertutor salbungsvoll. »Allerdings, Obertutor, allerdings«, murmelte der Rektor, dessen im stillen gehüteter Scherz durch diese unerwartete Prophezeiung nur noch gewann. »Der Schwan ist ausgezeichnet«, befand der Dekan. »Ein ange- nehmer Vogel, der durch die Pfeifenente erst den richtigen Pfiff be- kommt.« »Wirklich sehr freundlich von Ihrer Majestät, uns Ihre Geneh- migung zum Verzehr von Schwänen zu erteilen«, sagte der Schatz- meister. »Das ist ein nur höchst selten gewährtes Privileg, müssen Sie wissen.« »Höchst selten«, bestätigte der Kaplan. »Allerdings, Kaplan, allerdings«, murmelte der Rektor und legte Messer und Gabel über Kreuz. »Ich werde wohl das Beefsteak ab- warten.« Er lehnte sich zurück und musterte die Gesichter der Fellows mit frischem Widerwillen. Sie waren, dachte er zum wie- derholten Mal, ein atavistischer Haufen, und ganz besonders jetzt, wo sie die Servietten in ihre Krägen gestopft hatten – ein uralter Brauch dieses Colleges –, da ihre Stirnen von Schweiß glänzten und ihre Münder ununterbrochen gefüllt waren. Wie wenig hatte sich doch verändert, seit er selbst in Porterhouse studiert hatte. Sogar die College-Bediensteten waren dieselben – wenigstens hatte es den Anschein. Der gleiche schlurfende Gang, die wegen Drüsen- fehlfunktionen offenstehenden Münder und zitternden Unterlip- pen, die gleiche Unterwürfigkeit, die sein Gefühl für soziale Ge- rechtigkeit so oft beleidigt hatte, als er jung war. Und es immer 8 noch beleidigte. Vierzig Jahre lang war Sir Godber unter dem Ban- ner sozialer Gerechtigkeit marschiert – oder wenigstens flaniert –, und wenn er etwas erreicht hatte (einige Zyniker bezweifelten selbst dies), so ließ es sich auf das feine Gespür zurückführen, das er an- gesichts der zwischen den College-Bediensteten und den jungen Herren von Porterhouse gähnenden Kluft entwickelt hatte. Seine anschließende Karriere in der Politik zeichnete sich durch die größ- ten Ambitionen und, wie einige sagten, geringsten Erfolge seit As- quith aus; so hatte er eine Reihe von Gesetzen durchs Parlament la- viert, die – mit dem Ziel, die Unterprivilegierten irgendwie zu unterstützen – »Aufbauzuschüsse« genannte Subventionen für die Mittelklasse eingeführt hatten. Seine Kampagne »Ein Badezimmer in jedem Heim« hatte ihm den Spitznamen »Soapy« und die Rit- terwürde eingebracht, wohingegen seine Leistungen als Minister für Forschung und Entwicklung lediglich mit vorzeitiger Pensio- nierung und dem Rektorat von Porterhouse College belohnt wor- den waren. Das Ironische an seiner Ernennung war unter anderem, daß er sie eben der Einrichtung verdankte, die er am meisten ver- achtete; nämlich dem königlichen Patronat; vielleicht hatte die Kenntnis dieser Tatsache ihm zu dem Entschluß verholfen, seine Karriere als Initiator sozialer Veränderungen zu beenden, indem er den sozialen Charakter und die Traditionen seines alten Colleges von Grund auf umkrempelte. Dies und das Wissen, daß seine Beru- fung auf die massive Ablehnung fast aller Fellows gestoßen war. Nur der Kaplan hatte ihn freundlich aufgenommen, was aller Wahr- scheinlichkeit auch daran lag, daß er taub war und Sir Godbers vollen Namen nicht verstanden hatte. Nein, sogar in seiner eige- nen Einschätzung war er nur mangels anderer geeigneter Kandida- ten Rektor geworden, und weil die Fellows sich nicht untereinan- der geeinigt und einen neuen Rektor gewählt hatten. Auch hatte der verblichene Rektor versäumt, auf dem Totenbett seinen Nach- folger zu benennen – ein Privileg, das ihm nach alter Porterhouse- Tradition zustand; da diese beiden Auswege wegfielen, hatte sich der Premierminister, dessen Regierung in den letzten Zuckungen lag, von einem Klotz am Bein befreit und Sir Godber ernannt. 9 Wenn auch nicht in akademischen, so doch in parlamentarischen Kreisen war diese Ernennung erleichtert begrüßt worden. »Endlich etwas, in das Sie sich so richtig

    The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1 Luis Alberto Lázaro Lafuente University of Alcalá Satiric novels have traditionally been regarded as a minor form by many critics and scholars. Aristotle had already referred to the satirists as "the more trivial" poets who wrote about the actions of meaner~persons, in stark contrast to the "more serious-minded" epic poets who represented noble actions and the lives of noble people (1965: 35-36). This attitude has persisted throughout many centuries in the history of English literature. Even though satire enjoyed its golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially with the poetry of such distinguished writers as Dryden or Pope, satiric compositions in prose did not really achieve the same high position2• When with time the novel became a well• established genre, it was mainly naturalistic fiction and psychological stories that commonly attained a prominent status among the literary critics, whereas the comic and satiric novel, with a few exceptions, was relegated to a status of popular prose on the fringe of the canon, or even outside it. Indeed, in the twentieth century, several prestigious authors have offered a rather gloomy picture of the state of novelistic satire. Robert C.
