Brought up to regard copious flows of money as his birthright, he can't understand why the funds have been cut off, nor why friends he recruited as Lloyds' Names no longer want to talk to him. When gambling fails, Timothy turns to embezzlement, but it's the lesser offence of helping himself to some strangely aromatic tobacco that propels him up the motorway and into bed with the Chief Constable's wife. The Chief Constable has just survived charges of bribery and perjury and is not too concerned that his efforts to dispose of Timothy involve false imprisonment, breaking and entering, and a spot of GBH. It is only when the Chief tries to frame his old adversary, the upright Miss Midden, that things begin to go seriously wrong as his underhand ploy opens up the way to spectacular mayhem. Tom Sharpe is an exceptional writer who isn't politically correct so if you are sensitive to this it isn't for you. The natural climax comes about three-quarters of the way through, and the resolution quickly follows; however, the tale is spun on through several more chapters, quite unnecessarily in my view. He is the author of sixteen bestselling novels, including Porterhouse Blue and Blott on the Landscape, which were serialised on television, and Wilt, which was made into a film. It is one of the more surprising facts about old England that one can still find families living in the same houses their ancestors built centuries before and on land that has belonged to them since before the Norman Conquest. The Gropes of Grope Hall are one such family. A brilliantly funny novel about what happens when the women take charge. The Gropes are an old English family based in Northumberland, separated from the rest of society and as eccentric as they come. It is a line dominated by strong-willed and oversexed women, determined to produce more female heirs regardless of whether their desired partners are willing or not. At the dawn of the new millennium, tired and gormless teenager Esmond is abducted and lured to Grope Hall by a descendant of the Gropes. Young Esmond is powerless to escape, and his kidnap sets in motion a stream of farcical events that will have readers laughing out loud. Tom Sharpe’s trademark humour abounds in this new novel, marking him out once again as an outstanding storyteller. From the Trade Paperback edition. A Very Peculiar Practice and Campus Comedy: 35 Years On
A Very Peculiar Practice and campus comedy: 35 years on G Neil Martin Regent’s University London !1 Abstract On May 21st 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of Andrew Davies’s campus black comedy A Very Peculiar Practice. 2021 celebrates the series’ 35th anniversary. This article considers the contribution of the series to the genre of campus comedy (and “campus novel”). It considers and evaluates the themes, plots and characters introduced throughout the series and how these re- flected, and reacted to, the political backdrop and ideology of the time. Its contribution to the tradi- tion of university satire is discussed in the broader context of the campus novel, that comedy of manners in which the University, its staff, its students and its operation are satirised. !2 On May 21st, 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of a black comedy that was to mark a milestone in BBC drama comedy and launched the television career of one of the UK’s most prodigious adaptors of novel fiction for television and film. A Very Peculiar Practice, written by An- drew Davies, ran for two series and a special, and was a very peculiar drama in many ways but in at least two: (i) it was born of some degree of creative desperation by the author and was, there- fore, almost a serendipitous creation, and (ii) it revivified a genre of comedy (and drama) which had been dormant since at least, arguably, 1981, when the BBC (again) broadcast the television adaptation of Malcolm Bradbury’s novel, The History Man. -

Sharpe is sharpVon -KundeThis book was recommended to me by a colleague of mine, who nearly couldn't stop laughing while he told me a little bit about it. Having read Riotous Assembly, I completely agree with his assessment. Whoever likes storys with a dark kind of humor will be delighted. The only drawback was that people must have thought I was crazy when I laughed out loud in the subway. -
A Leighton Year
A Leighton Year The following are extracts from some of the letters I’ve received from Rodney Leighton over a period of time. Where possible they are in chronological order. Why am I putting them out to a wider audience? Because I feel that Rodney’s often sharp insight and dry humour has been missing from fanzines – mainly due to his lack of technological facilities (ie, connectivity at his location and a lack of computer equipment) and like the man himself says later, there are times when he feels he doesn’t have the motivation to write. So here are some little windows into the Leighton World. He may never get around to doing the next issue of The Leighton Look, a review and comment zine akin to Mike Gunderloy’s Factsheet Five, but at least he now has a little bit of a web presence. Rodney Leighton, #11 Branch Road, R.R. #3, Tatamagouch, Nova Scotia, B0K 1V0, CANADA (undated extract) Wilderness by Robert B. Parker. Intriguing book. The Susan-like character is sort of a bitch in the first part of the book; plot is rather silly but it is an interesting book. I think I will keep it to possibly read again someday. Everville by Clive Barker. This is a fantastic book, no pun intended. It’s not a fast read or that easy to read but I really enjoyed it. The concept of dreams being real and being able to dream things and people into reality is cool; the concept of the story being real and having to be told no matter what is, of course, an analogy for fate but I like it. -

Stuck in a job he doesn't want -- but can't afford to lose -- as nominal Head of the Communications Department at Fenland University, Wilt is still subject to the whims of The Powers That Be, both in and outside of work. The demands of his snobbish wife Eva, and the stupendous school fees of his despicable quadruplet daughters, cause him the biggest headaches... apart from the hangovers, that is. When Eva signs him up for a summer job, teaching the gun-toting idiot son of a lusty local aristocrat, Wilt is not amused. But, as circumstances unravel and the summer goes on, Wilt sees that the situation could be put to his financial advantage, as well as giving Eva some headaches of her own. With Tom Sharpe's famous dark humour in full evidence, and an explosive plot which takes its readers to places they never realised they wanted to visit, The Wilt Inheritance is another instant classic from the British master of farce. What's So Funny????
Inkslinger THE Spring 2013 1511 South 1500 East Salt Lake City, UT 84105 Book Review 801-484-9100 I always read Carl Hiaasen with a grin. A Florida reporter and later columnist for the Miami Herald, Hiaasen knows the dark, tawdry underbelly of the Sunshine State like only a native who What’s So really loves the place can. Both his adult and award-winning juve- nile fiction revolve around the despoiling of paradise by develop- ers and their toadies in the State House. His characters, like the one-eyed former governor who subsists on roadkill while lurking Funny???? in the Everglades, are memorable. Any of his books are comic thrill rides, but the one that opens with a wife treading water as Compiled by Anne Holman she watches the cruise ship she was recently aboard sail off into the night is a good place to start: Skinny Dip.
