The Great Pursuit (Eurona Duology, #2) by Wendy Higgins The Great Pursuit is a comic novel by Tom Sharpe. It is a satire encompassing commercialism in publishing and literary criticism. The story is a farce about greed in the publishing world, and the struggle between literature as a high art and the commercial imperative to reduce it to its lowest common denominator. Frensic and Futtle is a small and successful The Great Pursuit agency. But following a successful court case by a woman who claimed to have been libelled by one of their authors, the agency rapidly loses business. One day, a manuscript for a book called Pause O Men for the Virgin arrives at the agency, together with a note from the author's solicitor, saying that the author wishes to remain anonymous and that the agency has carte blanche on how it deals with the book. The book turns out to deal with the love affair between an year-old woman and a year-old youth. Sonia and Frensic decide to use aspiring but unpublished author Peter Piper to stand in for the anonymous The Great Pursuit. But when Piper receives a proof copy of Pause from the publisher by mistake, it takes a certain amount of persuasion and arm-twisting from The Great Pursuit Futtle to convince Piper to travel to America. Frederick Frensic is something of an anachronism, adhering to styles and habits of the 18th century. He is The Great Pursuit for having a nose for successful authors, but he attributes his success to knowing what the public wants. Sonia Futtle is Frensic's partner in the The Great Pursuit. An American, she has a very forceful personality and has a reputation as a very persuasive saleswoman. Peter Piper is a struggling and unpublished author, who has been writing the same book, Search for a Lost Childhoodfor at least 10 years. He has a very strong conviction that literature is a worthy and high art, and deplores trash fiction and the dumbing down of commercial fiction. He only reads what he considers the great authors, and borrows the style of the author he is currently reading for the latest draft of his book. Hutchmeyer is a brash American publisher, known for publishing unremittingly commercial books. He never reads the books he publishes, and considers authors to be useless members of society, good only for helping him make money. Baby Hutchmeyer is Hutchmeyer's long suffering wife. The Great Pursuit her husband, she is well read and worldly, although she longs to be free of her life as what she sees as a rich man's plaything, and is tired of her husband's infidelities. • The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1
The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1 Luis Alberto Lázaro Lafuente University of Alcalá Satiric novels have traditionally been regarded as a minor form by many critics and scholars. Aristotle had already referred to the satirists as "the more trivial" poets who wrote about the actions of meaner~persons, in stark contrast to the "more serious-minded" epic poets who represented noble actions and the lives of noble people (1965: 35-36). This attitude has persisted throughout many centuries in the history of English literature. Even though satire enjoyed its golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially with the poetry of such distinguished writers as Dryden or Pope, satiric compositions in prose did not really achieve the same high position2• When with time the novel became a well• established genre, it was mainly naturalistic fiction and psychological stories that commonly attained a prominent status among the literary critics, whereas the comic and satiric novel, with a few exceptions, was relegated to a status of popular prose on the fringe of the canon, or even outside it. Indeed, in the twentieth century, several prestigious authors have offered a rather gloomy picture of the state of novelistic satire. Robert C. Elliott, for instance, said in 1960 that the great literary figures of this century were not "preeminently satirists" (1970: 223); and Patricia Meyer Spacks, in her artide "Some Reflections on Satire" first published in 1968, even stated that satiric novel s by authors such I Some ideas oí this paper have already appeared in my essay "El espíritu satírico en la novela británica contemporánea: Menipo redivivo", included in the volume edited by Fernando Galván Már• genes y centros en la literatura británica actual.

Tom Sharpe is an exceptional writer who isn't politically correct so if you are sensitive to this it isn't for you. The natural climax comes about three-quarters of the way through, and the resolution quickly follows; however, the tale is spun on through several more chapters, quite unnecessarily in my view. XLI (Nov. 1916) Turning aside from technical subjects to literature in general, I would like to say that although we have not ever attempted to force good books on our soldiers, we have of course taken great care to place them within their reach. And it is not an illusion to say that when the men once begin on a better class of book, they do not as a rule return to the old stuff which formerly constituted their whole range of reading. My own impression is that they read rubbish because they have had no one to tell them what to read. Stevenson, for instance, has lifted many a young soldier in our hospital on to a higher plane of reading whence he has looked down with something like scorn – which is really very funny – on his former favourites. For that group of readers, ‘Treasure Island’ has been a discovery in more senses than one, and to the librarians a boon unspeakable. We have had, however, a large number of men who in any case care for good literature, and indeed would read nothing else. Needless to say, we have had special pleasure in trying to find them some book which they would be sure to like and which was already in our collection, or else in buying it, and thus adding to our stock.

It is one of the more surprising facts about old England that one can still find families living in the same houses their ancestors built centuries before and on land that has belonged to them since before the Norman Conquest. The Gropes of Grope Hall are one such family. A brilliantly funny novel about what happens when the women take charge. The Gropes are an old English family based in Northumberland, separated from the rest of society and as eccentric as they come. It is a line dominated by strong-willed and oversexed women, determined to produce more female heirs regardless of whether their desired partners are willing or not. At the dawn of the new millennium, tired and gormless teenager Esmond is abducted and lured to Grope Hall by a descendant of the Gropes. Young Esmond is powerless to escape, and his kidnap sets in motion a stream of farcical events that will have readers laughing out loud. Tom Sharpe’s trademark humour abounds in this new novel, marking him out once again as an outstanding storyteller. From the Trade Paperback edition.
