It's my first Tom Sharpe novel and I had great fun with the less salubrious side of the English language lol. The plot seems to be slightly unsatisfactory in that it come to no real conclusion, but that does not matter because, the path to get there it's more important than the point of arrival. I found myself laughing out loud with absurdity of the situations, although one also feels that, under certain Wilt in Nowhere: (Wilt Series 4), these things might happen for real. It' a treat to follow Wilt in Nowhere: (Wilt Series 4) the innocent actions will lead to chaotic results, and that is where the fun lies. This's hardly great literature, but the non-stop nonsense is very enjoyable. View all 5 comments. Mar 19, Pablo Estevez rated it it was ok. Not as good as 'Wilt', because there was less of the man in it. Dec 18, Adam Gower rated it liked it. Don't get me wrong, there were some real good laughs and Sharpe writes witty crude banter well but when you try and make everything funny, you cease to be funny at all. This is my take away from this book. Will be for some but just not for me. Aug 21, Diskojoe rated it liked it. As I said before, this is a lot closer to Waugh in a modern Wilt in Nowhere: (Wilt Series 4). Jul 15, JonRaven rated it really liked it. I believe I mildly laughed on just one occasion. That said, the book was amusing. Smile worthy, so to speak. I enjoyed it, but have to reduce my rating on account of having not found it quite as funny as I'd hoped in contrast to other books. Thus far it seems the older the Tom Sharpe book, the funnier it is. As a teenager I read the first two Wilt books and was mildly bemused by the adult humour; in this latest book Sharpe has clearly lost his way. Wilt and his wife central characters were children during the second world war and yet themselves have pre-teen children inand they are not really timeless characters. I picked this up last year in Heathrow airport where someone had cast it aside. Now I know why they did so. Aug 19, James rated it it was ok. A quick read. I've never thought these Wilt books have lived up to the quotes on the book jacket. They're mildly amusing diversions at best. I think this is Wilt in Nowhere: (Wilt Series 4) weakest, coming 20 years after Wilt on High. Every mention of peadophiles, sodomy and the like seems designed to be shocking and thus somehow funny in itself, but it just comes off as crude, and coupled with unpleasant characters it adds up to a pretty inconsequential, unsatisfying whole. A shame, as I quite enjoyed the original Wilt. Nov 15, Alberto G. Probably the worst book of all Wilt's life. The main character was not Wilt, in fact, the argument roles by his wife and daughters and the unpleasant misunderstood inspector Flint. I miss more Wilt's Wilt in Nowhere: (Wilt Series 4) action in this story. Let me admit it from the start: I have bad taste. You can't be high brow every day and Sharpe is a bloke who can be very funny. One thing I've been discovering of late is that I don't laugh with the same things I used to in my younger days, but a good comedy makes me laugh as always. Wilt In Nowhere was written by an old Let me admit it from the start: I have bad taste. Wilt In Nowhere was written by an old Sharpe and it's the fourth one in the Wilt series. Humour becomes a bit repetitive, it turns much around sex, or absence thereof, around his fatty wife and the four quads.

  • The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1
The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1 Luis Alberto Lázaro Lafuente University of Alcalá Satiric novels have traditionally been regarded as a minor form by many critics and scholars. Aristotle had already referred to the satirists as "the more trivial" poets who wrote about the actions of meaner~persons, in stark contrast to the "more serious-minded" epic poets who represented noble actions and the lives of noble people (1965: 35-36). This attitude has persisted throughout many centuries in the history of English literature. Even though satire enjoyed its golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially with the poetry of such distinguished writers as Dryden or Pope, satiric compositions in prose did not really achieve the same high position2• When with time the novel became a well• established genre, it was mainly naturalistic fiction and psychological stories that commonly attained a prominent status among the literary critics, whereas the comic and satiric novel, with a few exceptions, was relegated to a status of popular prose on the fringe of the canon, or even outside it. Indeed, in the twentieth century, several prestigious authors have offered a rather gloomy picture of the state of novelistic satire. Robert C. Elliott, for instance, said in 1960 that the great literary figures of this century were not "preeminently satirists" (1970: 223); and Patricia Meyer Spacks, in her artide "Some Reflections on Satire" first published in 1968, even stated that satiric novel s by authors such I Some ideas oí this paper have already appeared in my essay "El espíritu satírico en la novela británica contemporánea: Menipo redivivo", included in the volume edited by Fernando Galván Már• genes y centros en la literatura británica actual.

Tom Sharpe is an exceptional writer who isn't politically correct so if you are sensitive to this it isn't for you. The natural climax comes about three-quarters of the way through, and the resolution quickly follows; however, the tale is spun on through several more chapters, quite unnecessarily in my view. XLI (Nov. 1916) Turning aside from technical subjects to literature in general, I would like to say that although we have not ever attempted to force good books on our soldiers, we have of course taken great care to place them within their reach. And it is not an illusion to say that when the men once begin on a better class of book, they do not as a rule return to the old stuff which formerly constituted their whole range of reading. My own impression is that they read rubbish because they have had no one to tell them what to read. Stevenson, for instance, has lifted many a young soldier in our hospital on to a higher plane of reading whence he has looked down with something like scorn – which is really very funny – on his former favourites. For that group of readers, ‘Treasure Island’ has been a discovery in more senses than one, and to the librarians a boon unspeakable. We have had, however, a large number of men who in any case care for good literature, and indeed would read nothing else. Needless to say, we have had special pleasure in trying to find them some book which they would be sure to like and which was already in our collection, or else in buying it, and thus adding to our stock.

  • A Very Peculiar Practice and Campus Comedy: 35 Years On
A Very Peculiar Practice and campus comedy: 35 years on G Neil Martin Regent’s University London !1 Abstract On May 21st 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of Andrew Davies’s campus black comedy A Very Peculiar Practice. 2021 celebrates the series’ 35th anniversary. This article considers the contribution of the series to the genre of campus comedy (and “campus novel”). It considers and evaluates the themes, plots and characters introduced throughout the series and how these re- flected, and reacted to, the political backdrop and ideology of the time. Its contribution to the tradi- tion of university satire is discussed in the broader context of the campus novel, that comedy of manners in which the University, its staff, its students and its operation are satirised. !2 On May 21st, 1986, the BBC broadcast the first episode of a black comedy that was to mark a milestone in BBC drama comedy and launched the television career of one of the UK’s most prodigious adaptors of novel fiction for television and film. A Very Peculiar Practice, written by An- drew Davies, ran for two series and a special, and was a very peculiar drama in many ways but in at least two: (i) it was born of some degree of creative desperation by the author and was, there- fore, almost a serendipitous creation, and (ii) it revivified a genre of comedy (and drama) which had been dormant since at least, arguably, 1981, when the BBC (again) broadcast the television adaptation of Malcolm Bradbury’s novel, The History Man.
