John Chapman, later known as Johnny Appleseed, was born on September 26, 1774. He was born in Massachusetts and grew up living near an apple orchard. He loved being outside with nature. He especially liked watching the apple blossoms of spring turn into the yummy apples of fall. His family picked the apples and made things like apple , , and apple vinegar. When John was about 18 years old, he set out westward to explore . He was a kind explorer, friendly to animals and all peoples that he met, including Native . Barefoot and in tattered clothing, John walked hundreds of miles. He was sometimes seen wearing a tin pot on his head, like a hat! He often used the pot to cook his meals over an open fire. He took along his Bible and other special papers. Collecting apple seeds from cider mills, he carried them in his satchel. Along his journey through Pennsylvania and , he cleared land and planted seeds so orchards would grow. He wanted to be sure no one would go hungry as they traveled westward. But John didn’t just scatter seeds everywhere. He was very interested in how the apples seeds would grow and tested them in different kinds of soil. He wanted to be sure he’d get the finest apples! As more settlers traveled westward for new land, John helped them in many ways. He often gave away the seedlings he had planted and taught them how to plant their own apple seeds. Because of his love for apples and his kind heart, he became known as Johnny Appleseed. John never married or even built a house. His home was in the woods, sleeping under the stars. He continued to travel westward, clearing land in to plant even more apple orchards. In the winter of 1845, John became very sick and died. After he died, many people told stories about him. As the stories were told and retold, they became more and more extraordinary, creating legends about him. One of these legends is that he’s still alive today! ©www.thisreadingmama.com Johnny’s Journey
