Abstract The article provides an overview of descriptions of total solar eclipses in different literature forms, rites and toponyms of Slavs. It is shown that the solar eclipse had a prominent role in the worldview of the tribes. Explanations of some terms of Slavic outlook are given with suggestions for the correct terminology. A program for further investigation in Slavic and other people’s culture is proposed. In Tatar and Chuvash folk literature myths about mythological beings are often stories written in prose, describing su- pernatural creatures and spirits. These stories describe “encounters” between humans on the one hand and various mythological creatures, on the other. Among these Arçura/Şüräle is a Forest Spirit which has a very significant role in folk narratives of not only the Tatars and the Chuvash, but widely in the folk culture of other Volga-Ural peoples. These mythological beliefs help people of the Volga- Ural region perceive themselves as a part of the universe. In this paper, the etymology of the word Arçura/Şüräle is investigated; then its characteristics and its comparison with some other neighbour- ing Volga-Ural Finno-Ugrian and shamanic Turkic-Mongol spirits are examined. Introduction Folk beliefs, which have their source in history, culture, and geography, are among the most significant factors determining the identity and characteristics of a people. These beliefs which carry traces of paganism, above all show peoples’ ways of think- ing, traditional ties with the environment and nature in early ages, whilst each ethnic group has its own type of myths and beliefs related to mythical creatures.

The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods.

Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vladimir Korolenko, Vladimir Bogoraz, and Semyon An-sky wrote fiction in the genre of literary ethnography. This genre encompasses discursive practices and narrative strategies in the analysis of the different peoples of the Russian Empire. To some extent, and in some cases, these authors’ ethnographic works promoted the growth of Russian and Jewish national awareness between 1845 and 1914. This dissertation proposes a new interpretive model, literary ethnography, for the study of the textualization of ethnic realities and values in the Russian Empire in the late nineteenth-century. While the writers in question were aware of the ethnographic imperial discourses then in existence, I argue that their works were at times in tune with and reflected the colonial ambitions of the empire, and at other times, contested them. I demonstrate that the employment of an ethnographic discourse made possible the incorporation of different voices and diverse cultural experiences. Levine) The so-called “woman question” raised by the “nihilists” of the 1860s and debated by the realist writers, notably Tolstoi, evolved into a revaluation of traditional sexual morality in the modernist movements of the twentieth century. In the wake of the dramatic social changes wrought by the 1905 and 1917 revolutions, there also arose a “neo-nihilist” reexamination of women’s emancipation issues, represented by political and cultural public figures such as Aleksandra Kollontai. This dissertation examines approximately twenty stories and novellas written between 1914 and 1936 by Russian/Soviet writer Boris Andreevich Vogau (pseudonym Pil’niak), and several units from his first novel, in order to present an interpretation of Pil’niak’s views on and position in that debate, based on close readings of the texts mentioned. This dissertation argues that Pil’niak, considered by many commentators a champion of primitive man and instinctive behavior, in fact defines a biological morality based on pre-marital virginity, permanent sexual fidelity to a single mate, personal integrity and self-awareness, and a reproductive mandate.

They have a codified martial culture that is the envy of many a nation, and citizens in the military enjoy privileges greater than the average man. Vlast (vl-uh-st) A maritime nation between the titans of Ashersleben and Domovina. While their land infantry is dwarfed by other nations, they have an enviable naval force that draws from their large population of fishermen, whalers, and privateers. Płowce (pwohv-tsuh) A miserable nation of farmers to the west. They have been saved from conquest by their muddy winter season, which stalls the progress of soldiers. Themes, stories, and look are inspired by those of the Central European jewish population of the late 19th and early 20th century.
