Economic Development and Energy Efficiency - John Costlow Sustainable Energy Fund

True economic development is the result of improving the utilization of economic inputs such as labor, capi- tal, land, or energy. This is often accomplished by changing how we manufacture goods, changing how services are delivered or adoption of new technologies. During the last century, this economic development was driven by industrialization and information technologies that vastly improved human (labor) productivi- ty. Improvements in the productivity of other resources such as energy are poised to drive economic develop- ment in this century. In its 2007 publication “Wasted energy: How the U.S. can reach its energy productivity potential”, McKinsey & Company noted that the United States has the lowest energy productivity of any developed nation. Changes in how we harvest, extract, transform, distribute and uti- lize energy could radically improve resource productivity leading to sig- nificant increases in our standard of living. The potential for economic development is huge; ACEEE esti- mates the economic potential of cumulative net savings due to energy efficiency improvements alone in to be more than 29.3 Billion dollars through 2025. This does not include necessary changes to the energy supply chain which is extremely inefficient. Energy efficiency is often labor intensive; as such, the jobs creation coefficient far exceeds the loss of util- ity jobs or jobs created by equivalent investments in manufacturing. The work needed to achieve savings from energy efficiency alone could result in the creation of more than 25,000 jobs. To place this in perspective, the addition of 217 small manufacturing plants would net about 17,500 jobs. Energy efficiency jobs tend to be con- struction and technology related. The majority of the work is done on-site, making it difficult or impossible to outsource and most energy efficien- cy companies are small local busi- nesses.
