THE KEY. VoL. VIII. JUNE, 1891. No.3. THE PAN-HELLENIC CONVENTION. BosTON, Mass., April 16-17, 1891. WEDNESDAY afternoon, April 15, the Kappa Kappa Gammas of . Boston University ushered in this most auspicious Convention by an informal tea to delegates, visitors and fraternity women of Boston. The spirit of the occasion was contagious ; the interest aroused by the arrival of delegates, the desire to inspect strange badges and the pleasure afforded by the opportunity of meeting fraternity women known long by name through the various magazines, having created an enthusiasm that would be neither suppressed nor controlled. The earnestness and sinceri ity of the young women present was at once apparent, each face in itself inviting study and making of the whole a body evidently capable of any thing undertaken ; and the Convention, so pleasantly inaugurated, meant just that : its delegates were representative college women who by reason of their ability and preeminently because of their fitness by training for leadership are destined to be the leaders among women. A spirit of hearty good will prevailed everywhere and a courtesy for difference of opinion that was as noticeable as gratifying ; but the differ ences were found not so many or so great as might be expected. It was re!!dily seen that theground upon which fraternity is based is not the exclu sive property of any one fraternity organization but is held in common, and that on this ground the delegates had met and from it they would consider the topics of interest to all and the evils common to the fraternity system. -

Uncovering Hubert Bebb's Tourist Vernacular in Gatlinburg
NASH, KATHERINE A., M.S. Tourism as Heritage: Uncovering Hubert Bebb’s Tourist Vernacular in Gatlinburg. (2009) Directed by Dr. Patrick Lee Lucas. 187 pp. According to Park visitor statistics Gatlinburg, Tennessee rates as the most heavily visited national park in the United States; as a gateway community and the official entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, its downtown landscape remains cemented in the minds of many across the nation. Through a context based visual analysis utilizing Maxwell’s two-way stretch theory, the researcher traced the origins and defining characteristics of this Gatlinburg aesthetic – the Tourist Vernacular – that evolved primarily through the work of one architect: Hubert Bebb. Through visual analysis, Bebb emerged as the key architect who, over the course of fifty years, not only created hybrids informed by the existing built environment of Gatlinburg, but inserted a new prototype and subsequent hybrids that came to define much of the downtown landscape. Bebb’s early work sits as a response to the buildings of the settlement school era, established in 1912. With precedents from this development, he augmented materials and forms to buildings in a time when government officials conceptualized and developed the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, authorized in 1926 and formally dedicated in 1940, an era characterized by a boom in construction as a result of increased tourism. His work is most particularly influential in the third quarter of the twentieth century when businesses and community leaders, including Bebb himself, shaped a place image consistent with visitor expectations. Utilizing Bebb’s Tourist Vernacular, designers and business leaders have transformed the built environment in the last several decades. -

The Personal is Archival: Researching and Teaching With Stories of Women Engineers, Scientists, and Doctors Abstract Personal stories from archives are essential to understand the historical gendering of American science, medicine, technology, and innovation. Advocates promoted science, medicine, and engineering to young men, yet the twentieth-century brought increasing numbers of women into STEM education and employment. This paper illustrates the above by offering guidance to key archival and digital collections that show how women (individually and as groups) made places for themselves in modern science, technology, and medicine. Sources illustrate complex intersections for women simultaneously shaping professional and personal identities. This paper suggests how historians can reach beyond individual biographies to build broader analyses that deploy insights about personal experiences to parse cultural understandings of STEM and diversity. -
