Cambra . .1979 SWE Achievement Award aspire • advance • achieve Foreword 2006 n 1952, the Society of Women Engineers conferred its highest tribute— I the Achievement Award—to Dr. Maria Telkes for her significant contri- butions in the field of solar energy. More than five decades ago, a promi- nent researcher and educator, who just happened to be a woman, had already made great advances in harnessing the energy source that today powers many of our satellites in space and our homes on earth. This booklet describes the outstanding women who have received the Achievement Award each year since 1952. They are practitioners, researchers, educators, and managers selected in consultation with nation- ally-prominent engineers, business executives and educators from outside the Society. They are the women whose achievements wrote our technolog- ical history and formed the foundation for our technological future. The Personal is Archival: Researching and Teaching With Stories of Women Engineers, Scientists, and Doctors Abstract Personal stories from archives are essential to understand the historical gendering of American science, medicine, technology, and innovation. Advocates promoted science, medicine, and engineering to young men, yet the twentieth-century brought increasing numbers of women into STEM education and employment. This paper illustrates the above by offering guidance to key archival and digital collections that show how women (individually and as groups) made places for themselves in modern science, technology, and medicine. Sources illustrate complex intersections for women simultaneously shaping professional and personal identities. This paper suggests how historians can reach beyond individual biographies to build broader analyses that deploy insights about personal experiences to parse cultural understandings of STEM and diversity.

The Hall has inducted 276 women, both contemporary and historical, since its founding in 1969.     Opening the Gendered Toolbox: The Advancement and Treatment of Women in Engineering at the Undergraduate Level Emily R. Baker Clarkson University SD480 Spring 2015 Abstract The engineering field is one of the most underrepresented fields for women in STEM professions. With waning retention rates of women in the engineering field as women get older, young women truly hold the power to change the engineering environment now and in the future. This research explains why women enter undergraduate engineering programs and how their environment compares to women’s past academic and social environments in engineering. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were very few women in the engineering field. However, women’s admittance into engineering jobs during the world wars and into American university programs in engineering increased these numbers. Feminist thought in the twentieth century gave women more agency in their career choices, making it acceptable for women to have careers in engineering. But there still remains a stigma attached to women engineers described as microdiscrimination and microaggression. Minute cultural reminders exist in the lives of women engineers that limit their advancement. Clarkson University, a small engineering school in New York, today has 366 enrolled women in engineering. Founded as a coeducational institution in 1896, Clarkson excluded women from 1907 until 1964 when it reintroduced coeducation. My ethnographic work with the current Clarkson women in engineering shows that, while women in engineering are in greater numbers and have greater confidence, there are still elements of the engineering culture that should change in order to reach gender equality.
