I now believe we should stick to being a devolved government. I changed my mind on this based on that report I posted up the other week on how Scotland has had a very poor record in teaching children about the history of Scotland. As a result of that report I thought I should look more closely at the history of our relations with England and then went on to do further research on how Scottish the Scots actually are. For example, Scotland has seen migration and settlement of many peoples at different periods in its history. The Gaels, the Picts and the Britons have their respective origin myths, like most medieval European peoples. The Venerable Bede tells of the Scotti coming from Spain via Ireland and the Picts coming from Scythia. Germanic peoples, such as the Anglo-Saxons, arrived beginning in the 7th century, while the Norse invaded and colonized parts of Scotland from the 8th century onwards. -

Searching for the "vanguard of an army of Scots" in the early Canadian book tradeI Fiona A. Black2 From the Gaelic culture on Cape Breton to tartan skirts inVictoria and Celtic rock music inthe prairies, aspects of Scottish culture are inclear evidence across Canada today. Historically, Scottish influences in Canada have been documented by many writers, from early relatively anecdotal writings,3 to more recent scholarly studies which attempt both to quantify and qualify the role of Scots in the development of Canada's economic, cultural and political life.4 The involvement of Scots in Canadian print culture, whilst alluded to by such scholars as George Parker,' is not revealed in the imprints of items printed in Canada in this early period. This paper is drawn from a study which systematically researches the input of the Scots in English-language book availability in six Canadian towns in the period 1792 to 1820: Halifax, Saint John, Quebec, Montreal, Kingston and York, with the emphasis on Halifax.6 The input is examined from the perspective of the personnel involved in the book trade in its broadest sense. How others see us in film Scotland in the world – learning journey Introduction This social studies project uses cinema to explore how Scotland’s identity can be understood, not only in terms of the nation but also in terms of the identities which variously overlap it. Overall, these identities, sometimes called ‘transnational’, are various and varied. In cinema, they include expressions of ‘Scottishness’ constructed in the USA, Canada, England, France, India, Hong Kong (amongst others), which indicate the complexity of Scotland’s position in the world’s imagination. Exploring such films, the discourses that surround them, and how they intertwine with the global flows of people into and out of Scotland, enables students to consider how global citizenship ‘starts at home’. Social studies significant aspects of learning understanding the place, history, heritage and culture of Scotland and appreciating local and national heritage within the world becoming aware of change, cause and effect, sequence and chronology locating, exploring and linking periods, people, events and features in time and place Social studies experiences and outcomes I can make links between my current and previous studies, and show my understanding of how people and events have contributed to the development of the Scottish nation. SOC 3-02a I have developed a sense of my heritage and identity as a British, European or global citizen and can present arguments about the importance of respecting the heritage and identity of others. In the century after New Zealand became a Crown colony in 1840, an estimated 117,000 Scots made their way to Aotearoa, ‘the land of the long white cloud’, and until the early 1920s Scots constituted up to a quarter of all its immigrants from the British Isles. During the nineteenth century, according to James Belich, New Zealand was twice as Scottish as the British Isles, and indeed became ‘ the neo-Scotland’. Those statistics alone should have guaranteed New Zealand’s place in the premier league of host lands selected for scrutiny by the scholarship which for the last three decades has been ‘unpacking the kists’ of Scottish settlers and sojourners in many locations across the British world. Yet until recently this dimension of the diaspora has suffered from surprising historiographical neglect. Academic amnesia in Scotland may have been attributable to the persistent fascination with transatlantic migration, which began earlier and was consistently dominant in both proportional and absolute terms. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, New Zealand scholarship was characterised by a general reluctance to challenge perceptions of the country’s homogeneous Britishness, coupled with a somewhat counter-historical concentration on the Irish, and a failure to look beyond the atypicality of the closed Gaelic community at Waipu in the North Island or the exceptionalism of the South Island’s Scottish heartland of Otago. -

While different in their origins, the two questions are now deeply interwoven. Scotland will always be affected by the UK’s relationship with the EU, whether it remains in the UK or becomes independent – as Ireland demonstrates clearly. The surrounding context in which Scotland would emerge as an independent state is significantly altered from 2014, and any new prospectus for independence will have to account for that reality. Brexit serves two principal functions in the independence debate: substantively, departure from the EU; and, instrumentally, discord with Scotland’s democratic voice. The UK Government’s conduct of the process, and its resulting challenges to devolution and intergovernmental relations, have further eroded confidence. The disconnect between Edinburgh and London seems only to grow. Scotland is a pro-European country – evidenced not simply by its decisive Remain majority in the EU referendum, but in the multitude of anti-Brexit resolutions of the Scottish Parliament and consistent opinion poll majorities for remaining in the EU. -

It addresses the differing motives behind the choice of migration and the impact of different host environments on the creation and use of Scottish identity, the deployment of ethno-cultural capital, the use of social networks, Scottish associationalism, nationalism, and the return behaviours of Scottish migrants since 1950. The vehicle for this exploration is a comparison of Scottish migration to New Zealand and Hong Kong, where the former is used as an example of settler migration and the latter of sojourner migration. -

Concept Note Strategic Review of Irish-Scottish Relations Ireland and Scotland have close political, economic, community and cultural ties, and both the Government of Ireland and the Scottish Government are committed to deepening Irish-Scottish cooperation - enhancing cooperation in existing areas and identifying new areas in which collaborative work may be of benefit to both countries. The changing context for the Irish-Scottish relationship, particularly in light of Brexit, provides an opportunity to undertake a joint strategic review of that relationship, aimed at consolidating existing ties in a new international environment and unlocking the relationship’s further potential. The review will be conducted jointly by both Governments, led on the Irish side by the Consulate General of Ireland in Edinburgh and the Ireland, UK and Americas Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and on the Scottish side by the Scottish Innovation and Investment Hub in Dublin and the Scottish Government External Relations Directorate. A steering group, composed of relevant officials from each Government, will manage the review process. The aim of the process will be to produce a joint report setting out current areas of bilateral cooperation and identifying opportunities for cooperation or joint initiatives in new areas, which are devolved to Scotland, where these have the potential to support the policy objectives of both Governments. This report will be a public document, setting out how Scotland and Ireland will work together in the period 2020-2025. Proposed Consultation Process Internal Mapping Exercise Consultations will be undertaken across government to identify and map existing areas of bilateral cooperation. -

Scots language and British imperialism.’ Abstract This thesis offers a three-pronged perspective on the historical interconnections between Lowland Scots language(s) and British imperialism. Through analyses of the manifestation of Scots linguistic varieties outwith Scotland during the nineteenth century, alongside Scottish concerns for maintaining the socio-linguistic “propriety” and literary “standards” of “English,” this discussion argues that certain elements within Lowland language were employed in projecting a sentimental-yet celebratory conception of Scottish imperial prestige. Part I directly engages with nineteenth-century “diasporic” articulations of Lowland Scots forms, focusing on a triumphal, ceremonial vocalisation of Scottish shibboleths, termed “verbal tartanry.” Much like physical emblems of nineteenth-century Scottish iconography, it is suggested that a verbal tartanry served to accentuate Scots distinction within a broader British framework, tied to a wider imperial superiorism. Parts II and III look to the origins of this verbal tartanry. Part II turns back to mid eighteenth-century Scottish linguistic concerns, suggesting the emergence of a proto-typical verbal tartanry through earlier anxieties to ascertain “correct” English “standards,” and the parallel drive to perceive, prohibit, and prescribe Scottish linguistic usage. It is argued that later eighteenth-century Scottish philological priorities for the roots and “purity” of Lowland Scots forms – linked to “ancient” literature and “racially”-loaded origin myths – led to an encouraged “uncovering” of hallowed linguistic traits.
