Changed Lives, Flexible Identities and Adaptable Responses: A Comparative History of post-1950 Scottish Migrants in New Zealand and Hong Kong A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom By Iain Watson Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2017 1 Abstract This thesis explores two forms of modern Scottish migration, settler and sojourner migrations. It addresses the differing motives behind the choice of migration and the impact of different host environments on the creation and use of Scottish identity, the deployment of ethno-cultural capital, the use of social networks, Scottish associationalism, nationalism, and the return behaviours of Scottish migrants since 1950. The vehicle for this exploration is a comparison of Scottish migration to New Zealand and Hong Kong, where the former is used as an example of settler migration and the latter of sojourner migration. The study uses in-depth, semi- structured life-story interviews of settler migrants and the descendants of earlier settlers in New Zealand and the sojourners and returned sojourners of Hong Kong. These oral history interviews are supported by surveys of migrants in the host locations and returned sojourners in the UK and further validated against statistical sources. The thesis argues that migrant identities are individually manufactured, plural and fluid but also subject to change dependent on the demands of environment and the individual's needs as much as any inherent national identity. The comparative nature of the study highlights that migrant responses differ between destinations. Additionally, the comparison addresses the little understood or researched modern Scottish sojourner. The comparison against the better understood settler migrant cohort draws out the differences in motivations, identity constructions and deployment of Scottishness between the migrant groups. Both groups use their Scottish identities with varying intensity. In New Zealand, where Scottish identities are part of the cultural mainstream, and maintained by a multi-generational cohort, promotion is less intense than in Hong Kong. There, the small number of Scottish sojourners actively target and promote a hybrid form of human, cultural and social capital, as both a personal resource and a basis for usable networks. The thesis labels this form of capital as ethno-cultural capital, defined as the advantage or disadvantage, which accrues to an individual from belonging to, or being associated with, a particular ethnic group. 2 The thesis builds on earlier studies and emphasises that the fluidity of identity construction has continued into the twenty-first century. Migration requires of individuals that they constantly reappraise and recalibrate their identities to align themselves to the environments of their destination as well as the homeland upon return, a constant and circular renegotiation of change. The thesis identifies ethno- cultural capital as a hybrid form of capital, suggesting that Scottish migrants tend to be among its more adept promoters. It also proposes explanations as to why Scottish migrants are prepared to invest time and resources in ethno-cultural capital promotion. Reflecting the central themes of change, flexibility and adaptability, the thesis also argues that freed from the rigidity of colonial structures, Scottish associationalism in Hong Kong has broadened its reach and become more responsive to migrant needs. In contrast, New Zealand’s traditional Scottish associations have declined and their roles as sites of memory have been replaced by newer associational forms such as family history and genealogy research. 3 Lay Summary The Scots have been a migratory people throughout the country’s history, peaking in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While the demand for Scottish labour may have diminished in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, skilled and well educated Scottish migrants continue to hold an attraction for countries looking to enhance or supplement their human resources. These migrations may either involve a permanent break with Scotland so as to settle in another country, or may be a temporary sojourn with the intention of returning to Scotland or the UK at the end of the migration period. This study explores these two forms of modern Scottish migration by comparing the challenges posed and responses of migrants in two different destinations: New Zealand and Hong Kong. In the former, the migrants tend to be settlers, who find themselves in a society that has a significant Scottish heritage. In the latter, they are a small group of expatriate sojourners who inhabit the margins of a Chinese society, which is largely alien to them and difficult to integrate within. Using oral history interviews supported by surveys, the study addresses the differing motives behind migration choices and the impact of different environments on migrants and their creation and use of Scottish identity. It also investigates how migrants portray themselves to their host society through the use of their Scottish identity, their social networks and associations. The study finds that there is no stereotypical Scottish identity common to all migrants. Identities are individually fashioned, drawn from a range of sources and subject to change dependent on the demands of the host environment and the individual's needs rather than any formal national identity. Migrant responses differ between destinations, and are characterised by their individuality and adaptability to different environments, circumstances and challenges. It also argues that Scottish migrants tend to be among the more adept at promoting their ethno-cultural capital, or their perceived benefit, to the host society before finally addressing the challenges that return can pose for the different migrant groups. 4 Acknowledgements Firstly, my thanks to my Supervisors, Professors Enda Delaney and Angela McCarthy whose support and guidance have been core to the completion of this thesis. The Boumi Shrine Highlanders Pipers and Drummers were in fine form, impressing the British Consulate guest at my table. Their renditions of the service songs for the Marines, Army, and Navy are always crowd pleasers. Our Wounded Warrior guest this year was from the Air Force, but we were unable to honor him with Wild Blue Yonder. Nevertheless we expressed, a warm outpour of appreciation for the sacrifices he has made for our country. On a further musical note, Andy McCombe did his usual outstanding job of singing the three national anthems, God Save the Queen, Flower of Scotland, and The Star Spangled Banner. A slight snafu in the proceedings occurred when our “Keeper of the Quaich” discovered he had a scheduling conflict and could not attend the ball. We didn’t realize until an hour before Al Schudel was to deliver his famous Address to the Haggis that we had no vessel into which to pour the single malt. I rushed to the kitchen and began frantically searching for a substitute, when I came upon a coffee urn lid that bore a slight resemblance to a quaich. All went well, and Al did a superb job of addressing the haggis – as always. And honestly, did any of you even notice that our “Quaich” was a coffee urn top turned upside down? After a delicious meal, Al orchestrated the ever-popular Grand March, which led directly into dancing the night away.

I now believe we should stick to being a devolved government. I changed my mind on this based on that report I posted up the other week on how Scotland has had a very poor record in teaching children about the history of Scotland. As a result of that report I thought I should look more closely at the history of our relations with England and then went on to do further research on how Scottish the Scots actually are. For example, Scotland has seen migration and settlement of many peoples at different periods in its history. The Gaels, the Picts and the Britons have their respective origin myths, like most medieval European peoples. The Venerable Bede tells of the Scotti coming from Spain via Ireland and the Picts coming from Scythia. Germanic peoples, such as the Anglo-Saxons, arrived beginning in the 7th century, while the Norse invaded and colonized parts of Scotland from the 8th century onwards.

JANE HELEN WOODGER 2017 1 ABSTRACT Sir Walter Scott was a writer of historical fiction, but how accurate are his portrayals? The novels Ivanhoe and Talisman both feature Templars as the antagonists. Scott’s works display he had a fundamental knowledge of the Order and their fall. However, the novels are fiction, and the accuracy of some of the author’s depictions are questionable. As a result, the novels are more representative of events and thinking of the early nineteenth century than any other period. The main theme in both novels is the importance of unity and illustrating the destructive nature of any division. The protagonists unify under the banner of King Richard and the Templars pursue a course of independence. Scott’s works also helped to formulate notions of Scottish identity, Freemasonry (and their alleged forbearers the Templars) and Victorian behaviours. However, Scott’s image is only one of a long history of Templars featuring in literature over the centuries. Like Scott, the previous renditions of the Templars are more illustrations of the contemporary than historical accounts. One matter for unease in the early 1800s was religion and Catholic Emancipation.

Utilising personal testimony, it follows his life in New Zealand from 1848 – 1888, focussing upon his various occupational pursuits to explore how his sense of ‘self’ affected his migrant experience, analysing how he navigated life in the settlement, and how he was influenced by the world around him. Typically, migrant scholars using personal testimony focus on those of a (literate) middle to upper class status. A focus on Ferens, however, provides a working-class perspective. He similarly offers a perspective on Methodists in the Scottish Presbyterian Otago settlement. This work engages with studies of missionaries, religion in New Zealand, intercultural relations and constructs of self/other. Black2 From the Gaelic culture on Cape Breton to tartan skirts inVictoria and Celtic rock music inthe prairies, aspects of Scottish culture are inclear evidence across Canada today. Historically, Scottish influences in Canada have been documented by many writers, from early relatively anecdotal writings,3 to more recent scholarly studies which attempt both to quantify and qualify the role of Scots in the development of Canada's economic, cultural and political life.4 The involvement of Scots in Canadian print culture, whilst alluded to by such scholars as George Parker,' is not revealed in the imprints of items printed in Canada in this early period.     How others see us in film Scotland in the world – learning journey Introduction This social studies project uses cinema to explore how Scotland’s identity can be understood, not only in terms of the nation but also in terms of the identities which variously overlap it. Overall, these identities, sometimes called ‘transnational’, are various and varied. In cinema, they include expressions of ‘Scottishness’ constructed in the USA, Canada, England, France, India, Hong Kong (amongst others), which indicate the complexity of Scotland’s position in the world’s imagination. Exploring such films, the discourses that surround them, and how they intertwine with the global flows of people into and out of Scotland, enables students to consider how global citizenship ‘starts at home’. Social studies significant aspects of learning understanding the place, history, heritage and culture of Scotland and appreciating local and national heritage within the world becoming aware of change, cause and effect, sequence and chronology locating, exploring and linking periods, people, events and features in time and place Social studies experiences and outcomes I can make links between my current and previous studies, and show my understanding of how people and events have contributed to the development of the Scottish nation.
