Welcome to Champion Bay Senior High School! It seems that this has been so long in coming. November 2015 was when the first announcement was made to create a new Years 7-12 campus on this site. So much has happened since this time, not the least being the near completion of the $20M building project. Last week a former student called at the Administration Office to collect a younger sibling and did not know where they were standing. That’s how much the site has changed in just two years. The total changes include: • The Technologies Centre – named the John Willcock Technologies Centre in recognition of the contribution to the state of WA made by the Premier John Willcock during the 1930s and 1940s, • The Dance Studio, • The Music wing including new practice rooms, • A new Administration Centre and cafeteria, • The construction of the school green – an area that is used by so many students and staff. • Refurbishment to the Science and Visual Arts rooms, Media area, and Student Services. All in all, a huge undertaking. From the Principal …

The first day of Champion Bay SHS saw us take some drone photos of the whole school before we began classes and this showed us how fabulous the new uniforms look on our student population. More amazingly, there was not one student who attended school of the first day who was not wearing the new uniform. Feedback from the wider community about the new uniform has been so overwhelmingly positive – it has been a great choice. We have had a terrific start to the new school year with staff and students taking to our new organisational framework with ease. As a reminder, students are now organised into Student Teams for Years 7 and 8. There are three Student Team Leaders: Mrs Jayme Overstone, Mr Ronan Croft and Mr Fred Pritchard. Students in Years 9 and 10 are organised into Learning Teams. The Team Leaders are Miss Rebecca Bright and Mr Derek Goforth as Year 9 leaders and Mr Tim Collier as the Year 10 Coordinator.

OFFICIAL OPENING On Tuesday 26 February, we held the official opening of the new school. Attendees included the Hon. Sue Ellery MLC Minister for Education and Training, the new Director General of Education Lisa Rodgers, Hon. Darryl West MLC, Hon. Laurie Graham MLC and Mr Ian Blayney MLA.

One of the key features of the ceremony was the laying of a time capsule to be opened in 2044. Inside the time capsule were JWC and CBSHS shirts, timetables, lists of students and staff dated 26 February 2019, a memory stick of photos, a program of the ceremony and a letter from me to the staff of 2044 including details of life in 2019. It was certainly a strange sensation writing a letter to be read in 25 years time! On the evening of 26 February we also held a sundowner to thank staff, contractors and their workers and others who had helped us along the journey to 2019. Special thanks to Sandy Wendt for being our Bar Manager for the event and to Gina from Zen Productions for organising the fine details. A huge thanks go to Danielle Wilton for her support over the last years and to all the staff who have had their working environment turned upside down for a long period of time. AFTER SCHOOL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES CBSHS staff are offering a number of opportunities to students for after-hours learning. These include: Cheerleading and Dance, Visual Arts, Follow the Dream, eGames, GEMS and Homework. For more information about these, contact CBSHS on 99 658 300. WELCOME TO NEW STAFF I would like to welcome the following staff to CBSHS: • Ms Deb Kempton Program Coordinator – Transitions and Pathways (VET Coordinator) – as I write some parents may already be aware of Deb’s work as they sign off the opportunity for their student to attend the Rotary WA Driver Education Program. • Ms Nicola Wise – Teacher English Nicola is working with the Year 9/10 Learning teams. • Mr Andy Bleach – Teacher Digital Technologies – Andy has joined us from College. • Mrs Sarah Todd – Teacher Music – we welcome Sarah back to our new school and look forward to working with her in this role. • Ms Natalie Partington - School Officer. • Darienne Ramasamy and her team – We welcome these awesome people to our community as they come on site to conduct our cafeteria. Year 9 The year has got off to a more than busy start and the majority of students have taken up the challenge to make this important year count for best achievement for their own future. They are considered part of our experienced school cohort and expected to set a great example to those who follow in the newly named Champion Bays SHS. It will be an exciting time for them to progress through the school with Upper School courses and choices. I remind parents and carers that staff are always happy to phone you back when they are available if you leave a message requesting information on your child’s progress in their class. You can also take advantage of signing into Connect if you selected that option on the offers to see the online layout of what they are doing in class. Pease contact the school if that login has not been set up and you would like to do so. As always , it is great to have the support from home with all the positive messages about making the most of the opportunities for success at school. iPads Disappointingly, the system managed by the team has had some issues stopping us from rolling out the iPads currently, but we hope to have them in use as soon as possible. They are a great toolset for curriculum tasks and students usually take great care of them. As always, I remind parents and carers that the use of these devices is free and paid for by the school with no money needing to change hands, as long as the students do not cause deliberate damage. Insurance cover has usually covered accidental damage in the past. The Network Agreement as part of enrolment clarifies the need for great care to be taken with these as they are fragile. They are only for work purposes and any personal use or social media use should be left for home devices. We look forward to seeing them used for excellent curriculum purposes this year as the students aim at the personal best achievement in all classes. Thank you for your support with your child in encouraging the best uses of the ICT devices for work purposes at school. Kind regards Phil Pound Associate Principal

SHINE has kicked off on the 18th February with 48 beautiful Shine girls, who are all embracing the Shine program. We have a new circle of friendships, we are learning About the importance of TRUST and RESPECT and RESILIENCE for each other. The last 3 weeks we have been working on attendance , healthy eating and hygiene. We have had visits from MMG mining and Desert Blue Connect, which the Shine girls have really embraced and listened with open ears. A word from our Associate Principals

Wow, what a wonderful start is has been to 2019! A warm welcome back to our returning and new Year 8 students, and a very warm Champion Bay Senior High School welcome to our Year 7 students. Students in both years have settled in smoothly and are displaying a positive attitude and making good choices. It is such a pleasure regularly visiting classes. I have the daily privilege of observing our passionate teachers deliver the curriculum and our Year 7 and 8 students demonstrate our core values of RESPECT, ASPIRE and RESILIENCE within the classroom context. I have been extremely impressed at the high standard of work being produced by the majority of the students. It is also very pleasing to see students demonstrating these same core values within a social context during recess and lunch. Students are therefore encouraged to keep it up by continuing to RESPECT themselves, others and our school environment, ASPIRE to be the best they can be and show RESILIENCE in difficult situations by persevering and developing the ability to bounce back. In week 4, our Team Leaders and Student Services Manager, Mr Tapper, organised a fun filled and highly successful Orientation Day. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank them for their creativity, outstanding teamwork and excellent organisational skills. The purpose of the day was to build positive peer and teacher relationships through participating in a range of 27 team-building activities. Having had many informal chats with the students, it is safe to say that the students really enjoyed themselves and many new friendships were formed on that day. Attendance At Champion Bay Senior High School attendance matters and is everyone’s business. Every week Form Teachers inform students of their attendance percentage for the year and term. Students plot this data into a graph at the back of their school diary. All students are encouraged to attend school regularly and achieve 90% and above attendance. Parents and guardians are reminded to inform the school if your child is absent by either calling 9965 8300 or sending a text message on 0407 381 061. This needs to be done on the day of absence or before if you know your child will be away. All students need to work towards having all absences explained. Please contact your child’s Form Teacher, the Team Leader or Student Services if you have any concerns around your child’s attendance. With only four weeks left of Term 1, I would like to encourage students to end this term in the same way that they started. They are reminded to have fun, be kind and work hard! Welcome back to Champion Bay Senior High School’s first cohort of Year Ten students. I would like to congratulate them for the excellent start they have made to the year. I’ve only got one word on my mind, phenomenal! Phenomenal students, phenomenal staff and a phenomenal new school. A massive thank you to all the staff that are working so hard behind the scenes, after- hours, weekends and in their own time to make this team and school such a success, none if this would be possible without you. Congratulations, I know you guys will be This will be my focus. I know it’s not always amazing! easy, but you CAN do it! Attendance plays such an important role in a students’ schooling career. I urge everyone to please make sure students attend as much school as they possibly can. In the event of a student not being able to make it to school, please let the school know. Teachers can provide work that might have been missed. Our attendance as a team is pretty good, but we need to maintain this and increase it as the year progresses. Assemblies; We will have a Team assembly every fortnight during form to relay any important information to students. These assemblies do not affect class time and are extremely important to get together as a team and discuss issues, general information and successes. We will also do apply draws during these assemblies where students can win stationary, vouchers or other random prizes on offer. We’ve had our Year 7 and 8 orientation day at school. On The Pulse Update from Student Services Health and Wellbeing Team

Term 1 has got off to a great start. This term we have focused on mental health and our team was invited to present to all year 9 English students so that they could practice writing a summary and article. The presentations focused on how we can protect our mental health and wellbeing and a number of video clips from Headspace were used as well as interactive activities with the students. Many students demonstrated that they already have good health literacy and were able to identify how stress can affect teens and where to seek help locally such as Headspace, Desert Blue Connect, CAMHS and local GPs. Students have also been attending Student Services Art ‘N’ Relax groups and focusing on our strengths and goal setting. One of the activities used the flower as an analogy of growth and students identified ways in which they would like to grow and change over the next year. Individuals then focused on how they can achieve these goals. The activity as then extended to include some relaxation art activities including decorating flower pots and planting flowers as well as clay hearts. Students engaged well with these activities. If you are concerned about yourself or your child remember you are not alone. If you need support please contact the Student Services team via the school office.

Secondary Assistance Scheme The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling cost. The allowance consists of two components: • $115 Clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent / guardian. • $235 Education Program Allowance paid directly to the school. Please go to Financial Assistance to check your eligibility and come into the from office to complete the forms if you are eligible. Headspace will be super active in the school assisting students individually up to two days a week and assisting at the Champion Bay Academy with the Year 7 and 8s. The Geraldton Follow the Dream program, established in 2013, is delivered across two campuses: Champion Bay Senior High School (the host school) and Geraldton Senior High School (an outreach school). A dedicated team of specialist tutors and AIEOs (Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers), along with the Program Coordinator, provides an environment that motivates students to engage, learn, work effectively, and achieve their potential at school and in life. The Geraldton program offers targeted enrichment support for academic endeavours, cultural strength and STEM engagement. The program takes advantage of the many opportunities and resources available within the Midwest and surrounding areas. Thanks to connections with many exceptional partners, including the WA Department of Education, students enjoy a wide variety of extra-curricular activities that increase their awareness of real post-school choices and options, including excursions to WA universities, presentations from guest speakers, science fairs, and culture camps. The key purpose of the program is to increase the number of Aboriginal students who achieve a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and transition to one of the following successful post school destinations: • University entry via an appropriate ATAR, submission of a portfolio or a relevant Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification at certificate IV or higher; • TAFE entry to certificate III or higher qualifications; or • An apprenticeship/traineeship or meaningful employment. Follow the Dream is tailored to the specific needs of the participating students and may include: • After-school individual or small group tutoring to target each individual student’s identified learning needs; • Development and monitoring of a personalised learning plan for pathway planning and academic goals; • Course and career counselling, leadership development camps and/or opportunities; • University visits and participation in preparation courses and/or study skills seminars; • Participation in cultural activities, camps or excursions/incursions designed to enhance the students’ sense of cultural identity; and • Forums with guest speakers, local industry and/or post-school training and employment providers.

Eligibility To be eligible for the program, students must: • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and • Be enrolled in Year 7 to 12 at a Western Australian public school. Additionally, students must demonstrate the following attributes: • Achievement above the national minimum standard in NAPLAN reading and writing; • Achievement above the minimum standard in NAPLAN numeracy; • Work ethic: where teacher recommendation identifies the student as an aspirant who is working consistently; • Leadership demonstrated in school and/or community; and/or • 90% authorised absences.

CLONTARF

The start of the new year has seen some very exciting times here at Clontarf, firstly we have a new school name. We are now all attending Champion Bay Senior High School and with that have new school uniforms, a new school logo and for the first time we have Year 10 students attending that will go all the way through and graduate year 12 in 2021. The first day provided a great spectacle with the entire school population all in the new uniforms and the sight was absolutely amazing to see and a very proud moment for the staff to witness. We also have new look Clontarf shirts that the boys will be working towards with their early morning training sessions. A new group of year 7 boys have entered high school for the first time and have really embraced Clontarf and are extremely excited about their future involvement in our program. As previously stated we also now have year 10’s in our program which is also very exciting and provides a great opportunity for them to be great young leaders and role models for the younger boys coming through. We have a very busy and vibrant calendar of camps and activities to keep the boys striving towards for the first term. Each year group will have a Clontarf induction camp with the year 7’s having as day at the foreshore, year 8’s heading to Kalbarri, year 9’s to Shark Bay / Monkey Mia and the year 10’s off to Perth. We also have morning trainings throughout the term, after school activities and a few dinners and movie nights mixed in for good measure. Staff and students are all refreshed after the holidays and really looking forward to another awesome year in the life of Clontarf which we will keep you informed of along the way.
