Krusceniski (or Kruzscelnicka) was first heard in L’viv, 1892, and studied further in Milano, making her Italian debut in Cremona the season of 1895-96 as Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. Much of her subsequent career was in Russia until 1903, when she became a great success at the Teatro San Carlo. This led to La Scala as well as popularity in Spain and South America. In 1904 she was Cio-Cio-San in the revised Brescia three-act production (the first successful performance) of Puccini’s . She was at home in the dramatic repertoire in particular, having great acclaim as Salome, Elektra, Brünnhilde and . After she retired from the operatic stage in 1923, Krusceniski toured as a concert singer, appearing across the U.S. during 1928 in areas with large Ukrainian and Russian populations. She then appeared successfully at Covent Garden, Nice, Monte Carlo and the Chicago Opera, in this last house creating a sensation in the American premiere of Massenet’s Cléopâtre. After the Russian Revolution (during which she fled to Sweden “dis- guised as a cabin-boy and hidden in a trunk”), she made her way to Paris where she first appeared as a film actress. EYVIND LAHOLM [t]. Eau Claire, WI, 1894-, 1958. Following U.S. Navy service during World War I and semi-professional experience as a boxer, the six-foot-plus Laholm (born Johan Edwin Johnson) studied singing in New York with William S. Brady. His first stage experience, both in the U.S. and Europe, was in cabarets and operetta. In 1927 he made his operatic debut in as Canio and was, through 1938, a leading Wagnerian tenor with the Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, and Berlin Operas. He made his U.S. debut in 1939 and sang with the for two seasons, retiring then to teach in New York City, where he resided (and eventually died) in the Ansonia. Said Time Magazine prior to his Met debut: Tenor Laholm has already spent 14 years making himself one of the most famed Wagnerian tenors in Germany and had won personal applause from musical Fuhrer Adolf Hitler. But until two years ago, when he became Hitler's favorite singer, he was practically unknown in the U. S. Egg-bald Laholm, 40, an ex-boxer and heavyweight title holder in the U. S. Navy, exchanged his everyday toupee for a luxuriant blond Nibelung mop and took the stage as Siegmund, leaped upon Hunding's dining-room table like a tomcat after a mouse. His singing, less athletic than his jumps, was fresh and youthful, with less of the buzz saw than most run-of-the-mill German-style tenoring. His semaphoric acting bore witness to his Navy training. Laholm appears to have made only three issued recorded sides. 2959. 10” PW Parlophone R.2487 [Be11329/11340]. Most of Lamont’s career was with the Chicago Opera where he sang a wide variety of leading roles in operas such as Isabeau, Tiefland, Die Walküre, Il Trovatore, I Gioielli della Madonna and Parsifal. He also created principal tenor parts in several American operas. While La- mont’s only issued records under his own name are a few sides for lateral Okeh made in 1920, he appeared under various noms-du- disque for Okeh (vertical and lateral) as well as Emerson and Lyric during the later ‘teens. 1998. 10” Purple acous. In 1911 he created Cornelius in the Buenos Aires world premiere of Mascagni’s Isabeau. In the second decade of the 1900s he began a second career in basso buffo parts, moving to the United States where he primarily resided until his death. He was heard well into the 1930s in the New York area with smaller opera companies and on the radio. In 1928, La Puma and his daughter, Giuseppina (alternately known as Josephine) founded the La Puma Opera Workshop. This continued under Josephine’s direction for well over three decades following Giuseppe’s death. She was on the Met roster the season of 1917-18 but sang only in one Sunday night concert. A pupil of Frida Ashforth and , her voice was described in a review as “a soprano voice of rare, almost fragile, beauty unlike any other that has come to maturity in New York since that of Alma Gluck”. She never appeared in opera, but had an important concert career that lasted into the 1940s. Lindgren studied in Europe with Selma Nicklass-Kempner at the Stern Con- servatory, Berlin, as well as with and Jules Chevalier. She stated that Saint-Saëns said “that I had one of the most magnificent mezzo voices he had heard …. That just about turned my head, and for years I deliberately forced my voice down into the contralto register. It is really a with a tendency toward the dra- matic, and only since I have recognized that fact have I begun to make real progress.” She also “profited from the advice of Victor Maurel” with whom she coached in Paris, 1918-20. In New York she studied with Elise Kutcherra and appeared one season with the Century Opera around 1914 and then another, 1915-16, with the Chicago Opera. Lindgren married Italian tenor Raoul Querze in 1922 and retired, although in 1928 she announced that she “may sing again”. This colorful diva also wrote two books alluding to an affair with Otto H. Kahn during which she claimed she was assaulted by him on three occasions and was drugged and that she became pregnant. Supposedly Kahn had paid her over $300,000 during a twenty year period and she sued him in two highly pub- licized trials in 1930 and 1932. She was originally “sponsored” by Kahn, who arranged a Met audition for her with Gatti- LYDIA LINDGREN Casazza. The latter felt she could use use another year of preparation in Europe, but Lindgren “did not desire to study any longer”. Kahn, however, offered to pay all her expenses abroad, which she accepted, and he apparently continued to support what must have been an extravagant life style well into the period of her marriage to Mr. Querze. She divorced the tenor in 1934 and had him jailed for failure to pay her $221 due in alimony. Lindgren seems to have spent more of her life in court than on the stage. 3047. 10” Blk. acous. The son of a farmer, Lugo and his family (following his mother’s death) emigrated to Belgium, where he worked, among other jobs, in a coal mine and as a postal employee. Following military service, he was discovered singing in a local café and was invited to join a church choir. Vocal studies were then encouraged and, as over the age for conservatory scholarship, he studied privately. In 1931 he entered and won a competition, with a debut as Cavaradossi following at the Paris Opéra- Comique. His success in Paris led to Covent Garden, Verona (an audience of some 20,000 for Rigoletto) and La Scala and, during the War, to films. After investment problems following the War, he attempted to rebuild his career. While he continued singing until 1950, he wasn’t during that period booked in any of the major houses. After leaving singing he returned to his native Rosolotti and for a period took up his father’s occupation of farming. Soprano Magda Olivero recalled his “stupendous” voice and its “fresh” quality although feeling that “his brain was not on a par with his voice”. OTAKÁR [OTTO] MAÁK [t]. Hungary, 1872-Prague, 1939. Maák studied in Prague and made his debut in 1899 in as Gounod’s Faust and then at the Prague National Theater as Tamino. In 1903 he was engaged by Mahler for the Vienna Hofoper. Subsequently, he appeared with the Berlin Volks- oper and in London, Munich, Paris and Brussels. During a season with the Chicago Opera (1913) he married the young American soprano Mary Cavan, and they toured together in the U.S. the next year. Maák was named a principal tenor of the Prague National Opera, where he remained for twenty seasons, appearing there over 1500 times. He then returned to Chicago as a singing teacher but soon suffered a stroke, supposedly became completely impoverished and, according to one source, had to sell newspapers on the street as a means of support. Her birth date is listed in various sources as either 1906 or 1918, quite a difference. She taught at the Brazilian Academy of Music. Mei-Figner made her debut in Sinaluga, Italy as Azucena in Il Trovatore, although she had previously, at the age of 16, sung the mezzo part in the Verdi Requiem. She slowly shifted into the sopra- no repertoire while continuing her career in Italy, Russia, London and South America. During her appearances in Milan she met her future husband, Russian tenor Nikolai Figner (1856-1919). They both joined the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg, where they had highly regarded careers. Tchaikovsky, a friend of the Figners, wrote part of his opera The Queen of Spades at their residence. The couple appeared in the 1890 world premiere of that work, Medea as Lisa and Nikolai as Hermann. At the Im- perial Opera she and her husband also created the leading roles in Tschaikowsky’s Iolanthe (1892) and Napravnik's Doubrovsky (1895) and Francesca da Rimini (1902). The Figners were divorced in 1904. Eight years later Medea gave her farewell operatic performance, Carmen, at the Marinsky Theater. In 1930 she left Russia and settled in Paris. Her records are among the most desirable of early Russian issues, both for the warmth and dramatic effectiveness of her singing and the appealing quality of her voice. She recorded only in 1901 and 1902. MEDEA MEI-FIGNER as Tosca

One reviewer noted that “Mme. Meitchik, in particular, covered herself with glory.” She repeated that role successfully in New York with the Fine Arts Opera Company two decades later (1929). Her voice was so deep and rich that supposedly she once stood in for an ailing baritone in Rubinstein’s . During the later 1920s up to the period shortly before her death she was active in New York as a teacher, singer and impresario. One interesting performance must have been that of scenes from Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila, a charity performance at the Pythian Temple, for which she shared the stage with Nina Koshetz, Thalia Sabanieva and Dmitri Criona. She made one issued Fonotipia record in 1908 and two electric Brunswick discs in 1927. 2062. 10” Purple elec. Brunswick 53010. XERXES: Largo (Händel)/AUFENTHALT (Schubert). Just about 1-2. $150.00. 149 CARLOS MEJIA [t]. Mexico, 1892-Mexico, 1968. A major Mexican tenor, Mejia studied at the Mexico City Conservatory and made his operatic debut in 1915 in Donizetti’s La Favorita. He was popular on the Mexican opera stage. For example, at the Palacio de las Bellas Artes in 1935, Mejia sang leading tenor roles in Fedora, La Boheme and (this with his wife, Maria Teresa Mejia). His short stature likely limited his stage success outside of Mexico, but he became a very popular interpreter of Spanish songs throughout North and South America through many recordings. His first discs were for Victor early in his career. He later tought in Mexico City. 2520. 10” Blue acous. Victor 45140. MANON: Il sogno (Massenet)/GIOCONDA: Cielo e mar (Ponchielli). Many considered Melba the true vocal successor to Ade- lina Patti. A star from her acclaimed debut in 1887 through over forty years of international triumphs, Melba was noted for the purity of her voice and its remarkable silvery quality. Her finish- ing work with Mathilde Marchesi pro- vided an exceptional technique. Melba’s personality was, as with a number of other divas, bigger than life. When ap- proached by young conductor Eugene Goossens, unexpectedly assigned a Melba performance at the last minute, as to anything about her interpretation he should know in advance, she re- plied, “I shall sing the opera exactly as Gounod wrote it. I hope that you’ll con- duct it the same way.” Others referred to her acting skills as consisting of “quaint little gestures”, but the voice had an ethereal beauty that could not be duplicated. She was personally the epitome of efficiency, and her brusque directness could often create lasting impressions for better or worse. When introduced to at a luncheon arranged for the two of them in London prior to the America sopra- no’s triumph at Covent Garden, Poselle (who bore “Melba” as her middle name) remembered Dame Nellie’s stone- faced introductory remarks: “You NELLIE MELBA must be the new singer from New York. What sort of voice are you supposed to have?” Ponselle recalled that she should have been forewarned by McCormack asking her upon her London arrival, “Have you met the bitch yet?”, the word the tenor consistently used in referring to his Australian colleague. We certainly hear the voice of an angel in many of her recordings, although the owner may have at times seemed to have come from the nether regions. 3952. 10” Lilac GP ’04 Victor Melba 94007 [1203b]. A student at the Royal Opera School in Copen- hagen, Melchior made his debut as a bari- tone in 1913, singing Silvio in Pagliacci. Despite success, he was advised by Mme. Charles Cahier that his voice was certainly that of a tenor. After studies with Vilhelm Herold he made a second debut in 1918 singing Tannhäuser. After a period of study specifically in Wagnerian repertoire, he had a great success at Covent Garden singing Siegmund and he was subsequently a regu- lar there, as well as at the Metropolitan, Bayreuth, Berlin and Hamburg. His out- going and good natured personality was such that he was in demand as a guest on various popular radio shows in the 1940s. During the same period he also appeared as a co-star in several Hollywood films. While his Met career ended in 1950 after an argument with Rudolf Bing, Melchior continued singing until shortly before his death. 3092. 10” Red PW (gold print) Victor MRS. REED MILLER [t]. No. Carolina, Feb. 29, 1880-New York City, 1923. A cornetist as a youth, Miller played first cornet in the First South Carolina Regiment during the Spanish American War. Working in construction in 1900, he was heard singing by a voice teacher who advised he concentrate his future on the development of his voice. Miller moved to New York in 1902 and soon gained a position as a church soloist. Until the time of his death he was a noted concert, oratorio and church singer. His final engagement was as soloist of St. Thomas’s Church in . His sudden passing was the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. Miller and his wife, contralto Nevada van der Veer, conducted a summer music school in Lake George, NY, from 1920 through 1923. A story told of his first meeting with Caruso, around 1916, was recalled at a eulogy for Miller: Miller was walking along Seventh Avenue and when he came near 57th Street, he saw Caruso walking with his throat specialist. The physician was acquainted with Mr. Miller and introduced him to Caruso. “So, you’re the Mr. Miller who sings The Messiah?” Caruso is said to have declared. “Let me hear how it goes.” Miller sang a few bars from the portion “Every valley shall be exalted.” “I can’t do that,’” Caruso commented, when the last note had died away, “but I can do this.” And the great opera singer, disregarding the fact that he was on a public thoroughfare, struck high ‘C,’ holding it as long as he could, and thereby pleasing his physician, who was treating him for REED MILLER throat trouble. "I’ll let no church tenor outdo me,” was Caruso’s final word as he raised his arm in adieu. 3056. 10” Blk. ’12 Pats. Victor 17383. BOHEMIAN GIRL: Fair Land of Poland (Balfe)/WIL- FRED GLENN [bs]. He gained immediate popularity and was soloist in the major choral festivals and in concert throughout England. He was heard on an annual basis in North America after 1894 and made a tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1904-05. While he chose not to appear in opera, he was among the most celebrated of oratorio and concert basses of his era. After 1914 he settled and taught in Winnipeg and then from 1922 until his death in Toronto. His few, rare records were made for Pathé (around 1903) and British Odeon (1907-08). 9312. 11” Lt. Her official debut was in Japan as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana. In 1915 she appeared in England as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly with great success. Interpreting the same role with the touring Boston Opera in New York the following year, Miura’s work was described as follows by a Musical Courier reviewer: Mme. Miura was called numberless times before the curtain and, especially when she appeared alone, the volume of applause was nothing short of tremendous. Cheers were intermingled and flowers were thrown at her feet. Nothing was lacking to demonstrate the complete and unreserved capitulation of New York opera-goers. And all this admiration was well earned. She is innately winsome and winning and invariably graceful, and she made an exquisite picture of Oriental femininity. She is a diminutive woman and she has a tiny voice … But it is just such an infantile voice as the Butterfly of John Luther Long’s conception might be expected to possess, so there is no shock to illusion. Miura became an international success, but her stage repertoire in the West was limited to Mascagni’s Iris, Leoni’s l’Oracolo, and Messager’s Madame Chrysantheme, in addition to Madama Butterfly. In 1926 in San Francisco, Miura created Aldo Franchetti’s Namiko San. Frequently appearing with her and in her touring company was tenor Theodore (or Tobia or Tovia) Kittay 153 VOCAL 78 rpm Discs (or sometimes Kittay-Vito), a Russian tenor who had emigrated to the U.S. around 1912. He evidently first sang in opera at the Paris Opéra in 1905 as the Hermit in Der Freischutz. 1907 marked his debut with the Monte Carlo Opera (Raimondo in Lucia) and 1909 at Covent Garden (making his debut as Abimelech in Samson et Dalila), where he remained through 1914. In 1912 he sang once at the Metropolitan Opera in a Sunday Night Concert and also was involved in other musical events in the New York area. He returned to the U.S. in 1921 for what was noted as his recital debut at Aeolian Hall, the audience “small in numbers but great in enthusiasm”. His first hearing at la Monnaie, Brussels, was in 1922. In the ‘teens and ’20s, Davey was active in England on the concert stage as a singer and occasionally as a composer as well. Paris, 1894- , 1962. Born of a Greek family, Nespoulous originally planned on a career in education, taking voice lessons for fun. After by chance opportunity singing at the funeral of Sarah Bernhardt she was heard there by several important musical figures, including Jacques Rouche, director of the Paris Opéra. After some experi- ence with smaller companies, she was hired by Rouche for the Paris Opéra in 1923 for a secondary role in Héro- diade. Her career there gradually increased in momentum and by 1926 she was singing principal parts, such as Nedda in I Pagliacci. She subsequently appeared as a leading figure as well in Monte Carlo, la Monnaie in Brussels and in Italy’s San Carlo Opera. She left the Paris Opéra after a contract dispute with the management in 1933 and sang thereafter primarily in the provinces. Despite subsequently trying to make amends in Paris, MARTHE NESPOULOUS Nespoulous wasn’t welcomed back and was told that she had “abused her voice” and at that time “failed to rise to the level of perfection and style” required by the Opéra. She then retired and taught, being appointed a professor at the Conservatoire in Bordeaux in 1947. –Various Internet sources. 1921. 10” PW Red Fr. Columbia RF 46 [WL-3138-1/3182-1]. He subsequently studied in France (1911) with Oscar Seagle and Jean De Reszke and in England with Sir Henry Wood. He returned to the U.S. in 1913 and was a soloist in oratorio and operetta. He later toured with the San Carlo Opera singing roles such as Rodolfo and Pinkerton and also appeared as soloist with the Boston Symphony and the . Recording for Columbia and Edison as James Harrod in the ‘teens, he changed his name to Colin O’More sometime around 1919. He became particularly popular via recordings made for Vocalion, which heightened demand for appearances. These featured a variety of interesting performances, including tenor soloist in the 1923 American premiere of Stravinsky’s Les Noces, under the direction of Leopold Stokowski (with the four piano parts taken by Germaine Tailleferre, Alfredo Casella, Georges Enesco and Carlos Salzedo). Bruns- wick took over Vocalion in 1924 and O’More con- tinued to record for them into the early electric period. A group of records for Victor then followed. O’More was seen and heard in Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance on NBC television, June 20, 1939, likely the first Gilbert and Sullivan telecast. He was also on an NBC telecast of HMS Pinafore, September 5, 1939, garnering excellent reviews but likely not many viewers. Around the same time, he recorded Trial By Jury for Royale (eight discs), a set I’ve never seen. In 1944 he moved to Florida where he was on the faculty of Florida Southern College in Lakeland as a Professor of Music. COLIN O'MORE. "The Met? It's that way." In 1901 he studied German repertoire with Hermann Gura, the total of roles in his repertoire at that time over eighty. He spoke of his two favorites as Hans Sachs and Mephisto in Gounod’s Faust, in which he first performed in 1876. In the early 1900s his career began slowly disintegrating. He eventually took singing engagements in variety shows and restau- JOS. M. ORELIO rants which he very much detested, and was involved in several financially unsuccessful concert tours. She toured Australia in 1905 with great success. Sometime in the 1907-08 period she appears to have abandoned her career as a result of ill health. She resided in Europe until the beginning of the World War in 1914, returning then to Kansas City. RICHARD VAN HELVOIRT PEL [b]. Harlem, Holland, 1873-1950. A student originally of Cornélie van Zantem at the Amsterdam Conservatory and then of Julius Hay in Berlin, Pel made his debut in a small role in an opera by van Milligen, Brinio, in 1889. He was 16 at the time. This was followed by further study and then an official debut in Hungary. In 1901 he succeeded Orelio (see elsewhere in this catalogue) as principal baritone at the Nederlandsche Opera. In 1903 he made his debut in Dresden and was there for a number of years, also appearing in Riga, and as a guest with the Vienna Opera. From 1909-12 and 1924-25 he sang smaller roles at Bayreuth. Most of his career after the beginning of WW I in 1914 was in the Netherlands as principal baritone with various companies, often in Wagnerian roles. 167 VOCAL 78 rpm Discs ALFRED PICCAVER [t]. Long Sutton, Lancs., England, 1884-Vienna, 1958. While British by birth, Piccaver was raised in Albany, NY, and in his later teenage years was employed at Edison’s laboratory in Menlo Park, NJ. He was one of eight chosen among the six hundred contestants for the newly established Metropolitan Opera school in 1905, where he remained under the tutelage of Mme. Jaeger for two years. Taken abroad in 1907 with nine other members of the Metropolitan Opera school, he was the only one to have secured an important engagement as he was almost imme- diately hired by the Prague Opera as Gounod’s Romeo. From 1910 through 1937 he was a distin- guished member of the Vienna Opera. Supposedly his colleague on the Vienna stage, Maria Jeritza, “had not given Piccaver her whole-hearted recommendation …[on personal matters rather than artistic] … when her advice was sought by the Metropolitan officials” (according to a newspaper clipping), Jeritza then being a superstar of both Vienna and the Metropolitan. As a result, Piccaver did not sing in New York and he and Madame, although often sharing the Vienna stage, were on less than cordial terms from then on. Piccaver resided in England during World War II and eventually returned to Vienna where he taught. 170 VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANK POLLOCK [t]. Abington, IL, 1878- ? . An 1896 graduate of Knox College, Pollock made his debut as Robin Hood in the de Koven operetta with The Bostonians. He then studied in France with Sbriglia for half a year and returned to star in another operetta. He was heard by Marcella Sembrich, who urged him to return to Paris to continue studying, which he did, this time for a year with Jean De Reszke. He made his debut with the Paris Opèra-Comique in 1900 (parts sung there not known) and in Bellagio, Italy, shortly before that, where one of his roles was the Duke in Rigoletto. There he was heard by a representative of the King of Sweden, a result being his engagement with the Swedish Royal Opera as Romeo to Aïno Ackté’s Juliette. He mentioned that only he and Ackté sang in French, the rest of the cast singing in Swedish. The result, Pollock stated, was “a mutilation of the original [musical] notation beyond description, strange to the ear accustomed to the flowing phrases of the original French text.” While engaged by the Metropolitan Opera 1904-05, he was given no roles but appeared as a guest artist in a gala , shar- ing the stage with Sembrich, Caruso, Nordica, Eames, Frem- stad, Scotti, Van Rooy, Plançon and a number of others. What an evening that must have been! In addition, he was assigned the tenor part in two performances of Rossini’s Stabat Mater with Nordica, Homer and Plançon. He also sang “Una furtiva FRANK POLLOCK lagrima” from l’Elisir d’Amore in a Sunday night concert, joined that evening by Ackté, Nordica, Parvis and Giraldoni. In 1910 Pollock appeared in New York with Hammerstein’s Manhattan Opera in Louis Ganne’s Hans, the Flute Player. Of Pollock’s participation, the NY Times reviewer raved, “Frank Pollock has a really splendid tenor voice which the audience realized as soon as it had heard him sing his first air. He was one of the strongest features of the cast and made much of a part that needed authori- ty to carry it.” As a result of his success, Hammerstein chose him as a leading tenor for his Lon- don Opera House venture in 1911 in the title role of Offenbach’s Contes d’Hoffmann with Lina Ca- valieri, Felice Lyne, Victoria Fer and . He was heard in New York, 1912, in a revi- val of de Koven’s Robin Hood with Bessie Abott and then in the premiere of de Koven’s Rob Roy with Henrietta Wakefield. Through 1916 he appeared in various , such as Road to Man- dalay, in which he co-starred with Edison recording soprano Leola Lucey. Miss Lucey was likely the center of attention. She had sprained her ankle shortly before the opening curtain and, there having been no understudy, she had to navigate around the stage in a wheelchair. Venues for Pollock in concert were as varied as the Long Island Garden City Hotel and the Philadelphia home of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Stotesbury in a musicale for friends where and Pollock were the featured vocalists. How nice to be able to afford such entertainment! What happened to Pollock after the ‘teens seems to be a mystery. 1591. 12” Purple ’12 Pats. “A” plate Victor 70101. ROB ROY: Who Can Tell Me Where She Dwells (de Koven).
