Gernika As a Case Study by Idham Badruzaman Supervisor Master Thesis: Embracing the Sorrow in Pursuing Peace: Gernika as a Case Study By Idham Badruzaman Supervisor: Dr. Irene Comins Mingol International Master in Peace, Conflict and Development Studies Universitat Jaume I Castellón de la Plana, Spain June, 2014 Abstract The commemoration of the bombing in Gernika that happened in April 27, 1937 is actually the leading activity for Gernika to pursue peace. Continued by the peace museum, peace research center and the legendary painting by Pablo Picasso, the people of Gernika are trying to pursue peace through the memory of war. The thesis is about three theories, one place as a case study and four elements as research focus. Through the memory of war, which is embedded in the four elements, they create an identity of Gernika to be the symbol of peace and the symbol of anti-war. And finally, to all my compañeros y compañeras where I learned a lot from them, and special ones to Celia where I learn to be real human being where we suppose to treat ANYONE fairly and equally, to Kevin where I learn to be brave in exploring new things which I thought was even impossible to make, Jenny Murphy who taught me how to be assertive which is actually good for both ways and to be the lecturer of ‘the way you are’ and many lesson from all peace master students which I cannot mention it one-by-one here in this limited paper. The “Comfort Women” Issue and the Origins of the Women’sActive Museum (WAM) What we euphemistically call the “comfort women” system was a violent system initiated by the Japanese state to coerce women into sexual slavery and deprive them inhumanely of bodily control, pride, security, future and hope. In August 2005, sixty years after Japan’s defeat, we opened the Women’s Active Museum Inside WAM (WAM) on War and Peace in Tokyo in order to preserve the history and memory of the wartime violence committed by the Japanese military against women. The theme of the conference was ―Toward a 7 New Publications Peaceful World: Historical Approaches to Creating Cultures of 10 Doris Shaffer Memorial Peace.‖ The purpose of that theme was to have a broad appeal Lecture and attract as many papers as possible dealing with all the various ways of creating or achieving a peaceful world. The conference 11 Other News was attended by 82 people from the United States, Canada, 12 PHS Information Norway, Israel, France, and Italy. There were 16 sessions , including a Plenary Session focused on ―From Protest to Resistance? GI Dissent in Vietnam and the U.S.-Iraq Wars.‖ Carl Mirra, Alice Lynd and Chris Appy presented their papers and got the conference off to a thought provoking beginning. The remaining sessions featured several regional topics, the antinuclear movement, radical pacifism, peacekeeping, war resistance women and the culture of peace, the role of the individual in peacemaking, Christianity and peace, radical religion and nonviolence, and a session on Woodrow Wilson. In addition to the paper sessions, there were two guest speakers. The luncheon speaker on Saturday was Antony Adolf who presented his work on the history of peace. The Saturday evening banquet keynote speaker was well known scholar and activist Staughton Lynd who spoke on war crimes.

These museums, grounded in the activities of nationals, have a regional base but embody a larger international quest for peace education through the visual arts. The original type of peace museum is the anti-war museum. A second type is the issue-based museum such asin Hiroshima and Nagasaki that developed as a response to atomic bombs and the nuclear age. A third strand of peace museum focuses on the celebration of humanitarian work. Modern peace museums have a multi-faceted approach that encapsulates the world-wide quest for peace.
