The Vampire in the Detective Story

CATHARINES, ONTARIO IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Caroline Stikkelbroeck May 2007 © Caroline Stikkelbroeck For Chris and Jake, with love and thanks. I couldn't have done it without you guys. My sincere thanks to Professor Jeanette Sloniowski, thesis advisor extraordinaire, and her partner in crime, Professor Marilyn Rose, for the ongoing support and encouragement. ABSTRACT My approach to the vampire detective highlights its connections to the private detective's story and reveals the monstrous investigators' debt to early feminist forms of detection ~ specifically in their reformation of the 'other' and of traditional forms of power and authority. Seen in this light the movement of horror's imaginary 'other' into the rational world of detection can be seen as not an abrupt breach of detection's realist conventions, but an almost seamless transition into symbolic spaces that point to the detective's primary function ~ to make sense of the senseless. It is in this light that I explore the monster that is a detective as a symbol that is also a sense-maker, and a quintessential postmodern figure. I argue that the distinctions between monsters and 'others', and between popular narratives and postmodern religion have faded, culminating in a character that can not only model 'otherness' as an exemplary condition, but also provide strategies for modeling the form of active postmodern subjectivity that postmodern theorist Jim Collins' (1989) conceives of as heretical activity. -

Our attraction to objects is often mysterious. It is here in this mysterious zone of attraction, where I seek to reveal the omen in the ordinary. 2 InVisible Culture Pro-found Objects: The Magick of the Mundane Special Edition, 2016 issue #1 of FANGORIA Magazine (1979) plated in 24k gold 8.5 in x 11 in x 1/4 in From an auctioned set of wisdom teeth to a piece of lunar meteorite, my works, composed from appropriated, altered and cast materials, evoke the complex visual experience culled from subcultures of the 1970s-1990s. 3 InVisible Culture Pro-found Objects: The Magick of the Mundane The Lost Boys, 2015 found Polaroid circa 1987 4 in x 4 in Cloaked in a psychotronic aesthetic of filmic culture, these carefully considered objects are sourced for their ritualistic and cult potential to create new autonomous relics that archive the VHS era. -
Integration of the Sudanese Lost Boys in Kansas City Area

In the 1960s and 1970s, minors from Indochina were resettled in the United States. In the 1970s, the U.S accepted 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba through Operation Peter Pan. Many of these Cuban minors, aged five to eighteen, were sent to the United States by parents fearing their children would be indoctrinated in communist schools. In the case of these minors, they arrived in the United States with the consent of their still-living family members. In contrast, about 3,500 Sudanese Lost Boys were resettled in the United States in 2000, and more recently in 2010, 53 “lost children” from Haiti were brought to the United States following a devastating earthquake. This study investigated the integration and assimilation patterns of the Sudanese Lost Boys in the Kansas City area with the purpose of understanding the sociological impact on these Boys from their own perspective. As opposed to previous studies done on these Boys in Kansas and other areas in the United States, the present study used interview-based research and analyzed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. -
Family Reunions in Santa Carla (Santa Cruz)
No. 9 “They’re only noodles Michael...” Family Reunions in Santa Carla (Santa Cruz) Two weeks ago my family and I travelled to Northern California for a family reunion. We spent some time in San Jose, stayed with a dear friend in San Mateo, stopped off for a short visit in San Francisco (which I will describe below) before finally winding our way to Santa Cruz where we would spend the majority of our vacation. When I discovered that were going to be within spitting distance of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and I completely lost it. Now, you may be wondering why I would care about a stationary carnival next to the ocean, well this particular boardwalk was the primary shooting location for the cult horror film The Lost Boys! Released in 1987, The Lost Boys follows the Emerson family, single mother Lucy and her two boys Michael and Sam to the California town of Santa Carla to stay with her hippie father following her divorce. While both Michael and Sam check out the local nightlife they discover that Santa Carla is a beach bums paradise by day and by night- a den of vampires! With Michael initiated into the dark world of the undead, it’s up to Sam and two militant comic fans, The Frog Brothers, to hunt down the vampire gang and restore safety to Santa Carla. I was basically raised on this movie as soon as it hit VHS. We still have our copy taped off of Cinemax from the early 90s. The Lost Boys represents the perfect mix of horror, humor, sex and adventure and to this day is probably my favorite vampire film with Fright Night coming in at a close second. -

Cinemeducation Movies Have Long Been Utilized to Highlight Varied
Cinemeducation Movies have long been utilized to highlight varied areas in the field of psychiatry, including the role of the psychiatrist, issues in medical ethics, and the stigma toward people with mental illness. Furthermore, courses designed to teach psychopathology to trainees have traditionally used examples from art and literature to emphasize major teaching points. The integration of creative methods to teach psychiatry residents is essential as course directors are met with the challenge of captivating trainees with increasing demands on time and resources. Teachers must continue to strive to create learning environments that give residents opportunities to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information (1). To reach this goal, the use of film for teaching may have advantages over traditional didactics. Films are efficient, as they present a controlled patient scenario that can be used repeatedly from year to year. Psychiatry residency curricula that have incorporated viewing contemporary films were found to be useful and enjoyable pertaining to the field of psychiatry in general (2) as well as specific issues within psychiatry, such as acculturation (3). The construction of a formal movie club has also been shown to be a novel way to teach psychiatry residents various aspects of psychiatry (4). Introducing REDRUMTM Building on Kalra et al. (4), we created REDRUMTM (Reviewing [Mental] Disorders with a Reverent Understanding of the Macabre), a Psychopathology curriculum for PGY-1 and -2 residents at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. REDRUMTM teaches topics in mental illnesses by use of the horror genre. We chose this genre in part because of its immense popularity; the tropes that are portrayed resonate with people at an unconscious level.
