The series premiered on May 5,and concluded with The Night Is Forever third-season finale on May 17, The series followed the adventures of Nick Knighta Toronto cop working the graveyard shift with his partner Donald Schanke. Unbeknownst to most of his colleagues, Nick is actually Nicholas, an year-old vampire his human surname was reference to his status as a literal knight in medieval France. Remorseful over centuries spent as a The Night Is Forever cold-hearted killer, Nicholas works as a cop and often ends up using his special abilities to bring criminals to justice. Whenever he works on his cases, Nicholas remembers similar situations from previous lifetimes and these appear as flashbacks in the episodes. Nicholas explains his need to work The Night Is Forever the night shift by claiming to have a skin disorder, photodermatitiswhich requires him The Night Is Forever stay out of sunlight. Refusing to feed from humans, he survives by drinking bottled animal blood, something that most vampires find repulsive. The only human who knows his true nature is his friend Natalie Lambert, a city medical examiner who doesn't like Nicholas using his special powers as she believes it increases his need for blood. -

Page 104 FILM REVIEWS “Is this another attack?”: Imagining Disaster in C loverfield, Diary of the Dead and [ Rec] Cloverfield (Dir. Matt Reeves) USA 2007 Paramount Home Entertainment Diary of the Dead (Dir. George A. Romero) USA 2007 Optimum Home Entertainment [Rec] (Dir. Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much preemptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genrebased mass market entertainment. -

Critical Essays on Horror Comic Books
H-NEAsia Red Ink: Critical Essays on Horror Comic Books Discussion published by Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns on Friday, August 7, 2020 Type: Call for Publications Date: November 15, 2020 Location: United States Subject Fields: Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Popular Culture Studies, Literature, Film and Film History CFP for Red Ink: Critical Essays on Horror Comic Books Deadline for Proposals: Nov. 15, 2020 Full name/name of organization: Fernando Gabriel Pagnoni Berns (Universidad de Buenos Aires) and John Darowski (University of Louisville) Contact email: [email protected] Horror comic books are deeply embedded within comic book culture. Publishers such as EC Comics in the fifties to Warren Publishing in the seventies to Vertigo in nineties created titles that frequently challenged social norms and constructs. The general acclaim that accompanied Image Comics’ The Walking Dead kickstarted a massive production of new horror comics which are obtaining critical success and good sales with more variety and genre mixing than ever before. Further, horror comics have become the sizable source of film and TV adaptations. Still, horror comic books lack scholarship. Most critical texts trace the history of the horror comic book. What is missing is a closer reading on the different runs, mini-series, and/or particular comics. The editors of Red Ink are seeking abstracts for essays are seeking abstracts for essays that could be included in an upcoming collection. Essays should focus on particular titles or storylines rather than the history of the genre. Submissions may address any horror comic book from any era, including global comics, as well as close readings of audiovisual adaptations.
