Publishers such as EC Comics in the fifties to Warren Publishing in the seventies to Vertigo in nineties created titles that frequently challenged social norms and constructs. The general acclaim that accompanied Image Comics’ The Walking Dead kickstarted a massive production of new horror comics which are obtaining critical success and good sales with more variety and genre mixing than ever before. Further, horror comics have become the sizable source of film and TV adaptations. Still, horror comic books lack scholarship. Most critical texts trace the history of the horror comic book. What is missing is a closer reading on the different runs, mini-series, and/or particular comics. The editors of Red Ink are seeking abstracts for essays are seeking abstracts for essays that could be included in an upcoming collection. Essays should focus on particular titles or storylines rather than the history of the genre. Submissions may address any horror comic book from any era, including global comics, as well as close readings of audiovisual adaptations. -^---'^ vfr . —1{^ i W:' .— » j«^,.. • >-«i j/^-^j\.V. > J^X^ MONSTRUM: THE VAMPIRE IN THE DETECTIVE STORY A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM IN POPULAR CULTURE OF BROCK UNIVERSITY ST. CATHARINES, ONTARIO IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Caroline Stikkelbroeck May 2007 © Caroline Stikkelbroeck For Chris and Jake, with love and thanks. I couldn't have done it without you guys. My sincere thanks to Professor Jeanette Sloniowski, thesis advisor extraordinaire, and her partner in crime, Professor Marilyn Rose, for the ongoing support and encouragement. ABSTRACT My approach to the vampire detective highlights its connections to the private detective's story and reveals the monstrous investigators' debt to early feminist forms of detection ~ specifically in their reformation of the 'other' and of traditional forms of power and authority. Seen in this light the movement of horror's imaginary 'other' into the rational world of detection can be seen as not an abrupt breach of detection's realist conventions, but an almost seamless transition into symbolic spaces that point to the detective's primary function ~ to make sense of the senseless. It is in this light that I explore the monster that is a detective as a symbol that is also a sense-maker, and a quintessential postmodern figure. I argue that the distinctions between monsters and 'others', and between popular narratives and postmodern religion have faded, culminating in a character that can not only model 'otherness' as an exemplary condition, but also provide strategies for modeling the form of active postmodern subjectivity that postmodern theorist Jim Collins' (1989) conceives of as heretical activity.

  • Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories
Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories PAUL A. CRUTCHER DAPTATIONS OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AND COMICS FOR MAJOR MOTION pictures, TV programs, and video games in just the last five Ayears are certainly compelling, and include the X-Men, Wol- verine, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Watchmen, 300, 30 Days of Night, Wanted, The Surrogates, Kick-Ass, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Nevertheless, how many of the people consuming those products would visit a comic book shop, understand comics and graphic novels as sophisticated, see them as valid and significant for serious criticism and scholarship, or prefer or appreciate the medium over these film, TV, and game adaptations? Similarly, in what ways is the medium complex according to its ad- vocates, and in what ways do we see that complexity in Batman graphic novels? Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films. • Cinemeducation Movies Have Long Been Utilized to Highlight Varied
Cinemeducation Movies have long been utilized to highlight varied areas in the field of psychiatry, including the role of the psychiatrist, issues in medical ethics, and the stigma toward people with mental illness. Furthermore, courses designed to teach psychopathology to trainees have traditionally used examples from art and literature to emphasize major teaching points. The integration of creative methods to teach psychiatry residents is essential as course directors are met with the challenge of captivating trainees with increasing demands on time and resources. Teachers must continue to strive to create learning environments that give residents opportunities to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information (1). To reach this goal, the use of film for teaching may have advantages over traditional didactics. Films are efficient, as they present a controlled patient scenario that can be used repeatedly from year to year. Psychiatry residency curricula that have incorporated viewing contemporary films were found to be useful and enjoyable pertaining to the field of psychiatry in general (2) as well as specific issues within psychiatry, such as acculturation (3). The construction of a formal movie club has also been shown to be a novel way to teach psychiatry residents various aspects of psychiatry (4). Introducing REDRUMTM Building on Kalra et al. (4), we created REDRUMTM (Reviewing [Mental] Disorders with a Reverent Understanding of the Macabre), a Psychopathology curriculum for PGY-1 and -2 residents at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. REDRUMTM teaches topics in mental illnesses by use of the horror genre. We chose this genre in part because of its immense popularity; the tropes that are portrayed resonate with people at an unconscious level.

Page 104 FILM REVIEWS “Is this another attack?”: Imagining Disaster in C loverfield, Diary of the Dead and [ Rec] Cloverfield (Dir. Matt Reeves) USA 2007 Paramount Home Entertainment Diary of the Dead (Dir. George A. Romero) USA 2007 Optimum Home Entertainment [Rec] (Dir. Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much preemptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genrebased mass market entertainment.
