Stephen Published on: Nov 28, 2017 License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0) InVisible Culture Pro-found Objects: The Magick of the Mundane Box Set, 2015 Everything is an object and we’re all a mysterious collection of them. a Topp’s trading card signed by that favorite sports athlete shoved into the spokes of a bicycle, a bag of Andy Capp’s Hot Fries from the ice rink; your special penny; a teddy bear missing a nose due to over excessive kisses; cults; all religions; cold glasses of milk; a moment of regret; blanket forts; a quartz crystal; the rare black witch moth (ascalapha odorata); a stranger’s Polaroid; the only gold plated VHS in the world; a chewed drafting pencil with embedded histories; cinephilism; first kisses; bruises and scars. Our attraction to objects is often mysterious. In the 1960s and 1970s, minors from Indochina were resettled in the United States. In the 1970s, the U.S accepted 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba through Operation Peter Pan. Many of these Cuban minors, aged five to eighteen, were sent to the United States by parents fearing their children would be indoctrinated in communist schools. In the case of these minors, they arrived in the United States with the consent of their still-living family members. In contrast, about 3,500 Sudanese Lost Boys were resettled in the United States in 2000, and more recently in 2010, 53 “lost children” from Haiti were brought to the United States following a devastating earthquake. This study investigated the integration and assimilation patterns of the Sudanese Lost Boys in the Kansas City area with the purpose of understanding the sociological impact on these Boys from their own perspective. As opposed to previous studies done on these Boys in Kansas and other areas in the United States, the present study used interview-based research and analyzed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

    No. 9 “They’re only noodles Michael...” Family Reunions in Santa Carla (Santa Cruz) Two weeks ago my family and I travelled to Northern California for a family reunion. We spent some time in San Jose, stayed with a dear friend in San Mateo, stopped off for a short visit in San Francisco (which I will describe below) before finally winding our way to Santa Cruz where we would spend the majority of our vacation. When I discovered that were going to be within spitting distance of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and I completely lost it. Now, you may be wondering why I would care about a stationary carnival next to the ocean, well this particular boardwalk was the primary shooting location for the cult horror film ​The Lost Boys​! Released in 1987, ​The Lost Boys ​follows the Emerson family, single mother Lucy and her two boys Michael and Sam to the California town of Santa Carla to stay with her hippie father following her divorce. While both Michael and Sam check out the local nightlife they discover that Santa Carla is a beach bums paradise by day and by night- a den of vampires! With Michael initiated into the dark world of the undead, it’s up to Sam and two militant comic fans, The Frog Brothers, to hunt down the vampire gang and restore safety to Santa Carla. I was basically raised on this movie as soon as it hit VHS. We still have our copy taped off of Cinemax from the early 90s. ​The Lost Boys ​represents the perfect mix of horror, humor, sex and adventure and to this day is probably my favorite vampire film with ​Fright Night​ coming in at a close second.

  • Cinemeducation Movies Have Long Been Utilized to Highlight Varied
    Cinemeducation Movies have long been utilized to highlight varied areas in the field of psychiatry, including the role of the psychiatrist, issues in medical ethics, and the stigma toward people with mental illness. Furthermore, courses designed to teach psychopathology to trainees have traditionally used examples from art and literature to emphasize major teaching points. The integration of creative methods to teach psychiatry residents is essential as course directors are met with the challenge of captivating trainees with increasing demands on time and resources. Teachers must continue to strive to create learning environments that give residents opportunities to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information (1). To reach this goal, the use of film for teaching may have advantages over traditional didactics. Films are efficient, as they present a controlled patient scenario that can be used repeatedly from year to year. Psychiatry residency curricula that have incorporated viewing contemporary films were found to be useful and enjoyable pertaining to the field of psychiatry in general (2) as well as specific issues within psychiatry, such as acculturation (3). The construction of a formal movie club has also been shown to be a novel way to teach psychiatry residents various aspects of psychiatry (4). Introducing REDRUMTM Building on Kalra et al. (4), we created REDRUMTM (Reviewing [Mental] Disorders with a Reverent Understanding of the Macabre), a Psychopathology curriculum for PGY-1 and -2 residents at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. REDRUMTM teaches topics in mental illnesses by use of the horror genre. We chose this genre in part because of its immense popularity; the tropes that are portrayed resonate with people at an unconscious level.

    English 258: American Popular Culture: A History of American Horror Section 2: CRN 82152. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 2:30-3:20, Clark Hall 317. Course Description: Literary scholars have long distinguished between high art, art that stands out for its own sake, art that exudes genius without needing to pander to the demands of the literary marketplace, and low art, texts that can be either too political, too sensational, or too emotional, art that panders to the masses. In a dichotomy, think Ernest Hemingway as the true artist versus Michael Bay as the director who makes billion dollar earning Transformers movies riddled with explosions. The long tradition of American horror has long been associated with the latter category, resulting in dime novels and a long tradition of cheap B films lacking the big budgets of other films. Despite literary scholars having long ignored American horror, the genre persists, and famous practitioners like Edgar Allan Poe are still read in literature courses. And, despite it all, what scholars have classified as serious literature or works from other genres like detective fiction has long borrowed themes from the horror tradition, including a long fascination with themes like violence, sexuality, and race. As a class on American Popular Culture, this course will act as a survey of both horror fiction and films from primarily the American tradition, looking at the genre from a big picture view. We will study fiction as varied as the dime magazine stories of H.P.
