Modelling Flooding Sites Around River Niger Area of Onitsha Town Nigeria Using Remote Sensing and GIS Application Dr Sylvanus Iro, Dr C.E Ezedike
International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research Volume 11, Issue 2, February-2020 1027 ISSN 2229-5518 Title; Modelling Flooding sites around River Niger area of Onitsha town Nigeria using Remote Sensing and GIS Application Dr Sylvanus Iro, Dr C.E Ezedike Abstract; Increasing frequency and severity of flooding have caused tremendous damage in Onitsha area of Nigeria, requiring more efficient and effective way to reduce the risk and damage people face. In this study, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area was used in consideration of terrain's influence on flooding of the town. The Compound Topographic Index (CTI) of the area was calculated to extract areas that represent wetness, which shows areas liable to flooding. The DEM was further queried to identify the part of the town that will be flooded whenever River Niger rises to 5 metres above the current level. The result shows that of the 1226610m2 of the study area, flooding will inundate area approximately to 2400m2, representing 0.47% of the DEM cells of the total study area. The slope map indegrees identified areas with more than 890 to be safe from flood inundation when the river rises and areas less than 890 to be areas liable to flooding. The analysis of this model shows that the proposed model can be a valuable tool that will guide city planners to avoid areas that are liable to flooding being used as residential or commercial purposes and for minimising damages from flooding. A Reading of Chris Abani's Graceland
The Nigerian Coming-of-Age Novel as a Globalization Device: A Reading of Chris Abani’s GraceLand Sita Maria Kattanek Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany Abstract Since its initial appearance in 2004, Chris Abani’s novel GraceLand has been read in the context of post-colonial fiction and as a lamentation on the increasingly unequal distribution of wealth. The Nigerian coming-of-age story, however, actively questions this perspective and shows it to be an oversimplification: The novel speaks of global concerns but also of shared guilt. The author shows an amalgamation of African shortcomings and Western meddling to raise an awareness of the complexity of contemporary problems in Nigeria within the context of a globalised world. GraceLand GraceLand (2004) is Chris Abani’s second novel. Born in Nigeria, Abani published several works as a young man for which he suffered severe political persecution, more than once being sent to prison. In 1991 Abani left his mother country and sought refuge abroad. While in exile he quickly gained a Western audience. Having lived several years in England, he immigrated to the United States in 1999 and became professor for creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. In this sense, Abani belongs to the third generation of Nigerian authors, whom Waberi also calls “children of the postcolony” (1998: 8) and whose writings have become an integral part of today’s publishing market. -

How to survive while simultaneously asserting the heterodox, hybrid nature of non-white theatre and its contribution to British theatre was the urgent challenge. Within two years of the Thatcher government’s election to power in 1979, Britain saw perhaps the most serious rioting of its postwar era, which led to major developments in public diversity policy, though less significant change at the level of delivery. The black community could no longer be taken for granted and was demanding its rights as British citizens. The theatre group that epitomized this new urgency and resilience and the need to adapt to survive was the Black Theatre Co-operative (BTC).2 The group was founded by Mustapha Matura and white director Charlie Hanson in 1978 after Hanson had failed to interest any theatres in Welcome Home Jacko, despite Matura’s standing as the leading black playwright of his generation.
