This tour through the historical and cultural areas of , the oldest developed Chinese community in , may enrich members’ understanding of ’s past.

Programme: Date: Friday, 1 February, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm 9:00 am Assemble at Yau Ma Tei Police Station This Yau Ma Tei landmark has a Main Block built in the Edwardian Free Style. We will be examining this historical building, as well as the Officers’ Mess, to learn more about the history, neighbourhood and crime in the area – both past and present. 10:00 am Yau Ma Tei Theatre Built in 1930, this is the only surviving pre-war cinema in Hong Kong. It was awarded Grade 2 Historic Building status in 1998, and restored in 2012 as a venue dedicated to opera. The 100-year old Red Brick Building on the opposite side was the Engineer’s Office of the Former Pumping Station. 10:45 am Fruit Market This century old fruit market is home to 230 individual wholesalers, who operate between 12 - 7 am throughout the warren of alleys and stalls. It handles the sale and transfer of around 70,000 boxes (80%) of Hong Kong’s imported fruit every night. The market is characterized by sixteen blocks of one and two storey brick and stone buildings and pre-World War II signboards on the outer walls. 11:30 am Tung Wah Museum The Kwong Wah Hospital, established in 1911, was the first hospital to operate on the Kowloon peninsula. The Tung Wah Museum is housed in the former Main Hall Building of Kwong Wah Hospital in 1970 and was declared a monument in 2010. The Museum displays the archives and relics of Tung Wah and details its relation with the people of Hong Kong. The Curator of the Museum will introduce the displays and arrange a private visit to the century old Tung Wah archives for us. 12:30 pm Programme Ends Language: Cantonese Fee: $100 per person (Members only.
